Vax smiled up at Shaun, unable to hold back the grin. He hadn’t been so happy in such a long time - was it all going to fall apart? Was it going to work out?

Stop worrying about that and just live in the moment! A small voice in his head - which sounded suspiciously like Vex - told him, and he listened eagerly. He squeezed Shaun’s hand before bringing it to his lips for a kiss.

“I trust you with anything,” Vax told him honestly, and then felt his eyes widen in surprise. “Huh - I’ve never trusted anyone but Vex that much. I’ll be damned.”

Well. That was unexpected. Usually, if he was enough of an ass, Vax could get people to leave. This one either didn’t care about his attitude, or cared too much about the job given to him by the teachers.

Vax sighed, closing his eyes. “Good at the basics - decent at accounting. Gotta be able to figure out a budget.” Especially if it’s going to be a tight one. Now there’s a real life skill that will be useful. “Terrible at everything else. I think I’m in geometry? Yeah, those shapes can go fuck themselves. I’m not interested - it’s not going to help me anytime soon. Honestly, I’m planning on dropping out.”

Mentally, he began to make a list of things that he needed to do in order to be ready to leave the house - it was a daunting task, and he felt mildly panicked by the idea.

Anything is better than what you have at Syldor’s. There’s so much to do before you can do this, though...

He sighed and looked at the other boy before plucking a cigarette from the pack in his pocket, letting it dangle from his lips, unlit. “I’m telling you... You don’t have to do this. None of it matters in the end, anyway. You can help me all you want, but they’re still going to call me a failure at the end of the day. I just don’t want you to get your hopes up - thinking that will change anything. It’s not.”

“It’s my fault you ended up on your ass,” Vax mumbled, embarrassed. He ran a hand through his hair. “Here - let me buy you lunch to make up for it. I promise I’m not a total piece of shit.”

He wasn’t sure why he was offering to buy this stranger lunch - he didn’t have much left, anyways - but something made him think that maybe he wasn’t the only one who could use a friend.

“Vax Vessar,” he introduced himself weakly, holding out his hand in case the other wanted to shake it. “Sorry, again. I promise it wasn’t on purpose. Or your fault. I was just - I was being an idiot.”

Vax wanted to laugh - how was there someone in this shitty, ugly world who was so fundamentally sweet and kind? It didn’t seem possible, after everything he’d gone through. And she thought he was nice? She was the most naive badass he’d ever met. The contradiction was both amusing and hopeful - Maybe the world isn’t as bad as I think it is.

The quiet words that she uttered made him stop short - this powerful woman got lonely? With her sweet smile and friendliness, he found that hard to believe. Maybe he ought to get to know their new group more, instead of skulking in the back, waiting for someone to betray him and Vex.

“It’s hard, isn’t it? Being lonely, but not knowing how to fix it.” The words were spoken in the same tone she had used. Not quite melancholy, but definitely serious. “There are times that I don’t even realize that I feel that way.”

The fact that she wanted him to find his place with them made him stop short. He looked at her, brow furrowed in confusion. That couldn’t be right - he must have misheard her. She wants me around? ... Why?

By the time he’d wrapped his mind around the possibility that there was someone in the world besides his twin - who was genetically inclined to love him - who wanted him around, she’d moved on.

“Keyleth...” He started, but then stopped. He gave her a weak smile. “Yeah - that sounds great. Just be prepared to find shit in your things if you prank Scanlan.”
