@dailybipuns
it’s inherently biphobic to try and narrow the definition of bisexuality, actually
99% of queer discourse stops right before they define the true difference between bisexual and pansexual!
stop trying to narrow down the definition of bisexual to make room for other identity terms challenge
I dont really care if you use the term bisexual or pansexual, but what i DO care about is that you understand that bisexuality at NO stage in history was EVER trans-exclusionary. Bisexuality has always included trans folks, and non-binary folks, and the entire spectrum of gender between male and female, as well as Definitively Gender and agender. It has ALWAYS meant "attraction to more than one gender." It has NEVER meant "attraction to cis men and women only."
So, pan, bi, use whichever label you will. But do NOT buy into the recent-years innacurate concept that bisexuality is attraction to cis men and women only, because thats literally never been the case.
@brassmama exactly.
^^ Like. Its literally right there in the middle of the flag.
And by contrast, this is what the pan flag colours mean:
So literally its just......
bi colours = "same gender, opposite gender, and other genders"
pan colours = "men, women, and nb people."
Those two things are...... not all that different to each other.
The purple has always, literally since the flag was created, meant "more genders."
And bisexuality included "more genders" in the definition before the bi flag was created, too. Thats why they included the purple bar in the first place, because it was reflective of bisexual people's attraction to and relationship with gender.
If you feel that pansexual suits you better, or you like the pan flag more, then thats fine -- but don't spread the misconception that bisexuality is remotely exclusionary. Because its literally never been.
Okay, hot take? Bisexual and pansexual are functionally synonyms, and the decision to ID as one or the other comes down to personal preference and interpretation, and any attempt to further separate the two is driving a wedge between two communities that should have nothing but love and solidarity for one another.
We have more in common than not, and the words for our respective identities should not be pitted against each other.
Every day, I regret making this post.
There is no universally agreed upon distinction, & I am begging the people in my notes to stop getting to a level of pedantry where they’re edging on (or just blatantly) telling individuals what they “should” identify as.
Bi people are bi because they identify as bi. Pan people are pan because they identify as pan. Whatever individual reason someone has for deciding what language feels the best for themselves is none of your business.

I consistently regret posting this because of some of the messages I’ve received since, but listen:
What I mean is that there is no universally agreed upon distinction between the two words. It varies based on who you ask. The fact of the matter is that there are people who ID as pan who have gender preferences, and there are people who ID as bi who don’t feel as though gender matters in their attraction.
And I’m not comfortable with any discourse that results in people trying to tell bi or pan people what they “should” identify as.
i want to come out with a bi pun, but i can’t yet. i’ve just gotta bide my time.
True Bi/Ace solidarity is both being able to make the joke “I like my men the way I like my women.” despite having vastly different punch lines.
@camelcamilles
look please don’t take this badly bc i genuinely don’t understand (and i newly id as bi) why is it called bisexual if it’s not just like two? if that makes sense. like i saw your post saying bi/pan overlap but why is that? why is there two different labels if they’re the same? i have always been taught/under the impression that bi means two/two genders so i just don’t understand. i’m not trying to be a dick i’m genuinely curious and i can’t find any clear answer.
The “bi” in bisexual refers to the attraction to people of one’s same gender and other genders. I made a post a while ago with a whole bunch of sources, but here are two in particular that answer your question:
Huffington Post: “[T]his assumed definition of “bisexual” leaves out those of us who are attracted to gender-nonconforming people — those who fall outside the “male” and “female” ends of an incredibly wide gender spectrum. Last summer I actually wrote a blog post about this issue in which I explained that, according to the definition of bisexuality put forth in the 1990 “Bisexual Manifesto,” bisexuality does not “assume that there are only two genders.” On the contrary, the binary implied in the word “bisexual” pertains to our ability to be attracted both to individuals who are the “same” as us and to those are “different” from us — meaning we have the capacity to be attracted to people all across the gender and sexuality spectra.”
bisexual.org: “As a scientific term to describe sexuality, the word bisexual came into use during the late 19th century as a means of classifying people with both homosexual and heterosexual patterns of sexual attraction or sexual activity. The latin prefix bi- does indeed indicate two or both, however the “both” indicated in the word bisexual are merely homosexual (lit. same sex) and heterosexual (lit. different sex).”
To answer why there are multiple labels, it’s just more nuanced than that. There are many reasons why someone might identify with the bi label or the pan label. Labels are just words people create in an attempt to best communicate experiences. Bi and pan being synonymous doesn’t mean they’re exactly the same, nor does it mean that one is superfluous.
I hope this helps.
A phrase to eliminate from your vocabulary:
“at least bisexual”
hey kind of just need to get this out there somewhere, i'm a 20yo bi girl and have got a very big crush on my best friend (also a 20yo bi girl) but she's just getting out of a relationship and very very much not interested in me and anyways i just have no idea how to cope with any of it. one moment i'm trying to talk myself out of these feelings and 20mins later i've convinced myself we're soulmates and it's just. i'm a mess of feelings and just needed to vent somewhere
I’m so sorry. Unrequited feelings suck. They really, really do, and that’s kind of all there is to it. It’s a really frustrating and painful situation to be in. I don’t know if you wanted any advice, or if you just wanted to vent, so feel free to ignore this, but... My advice is to cut yourself some slack and be gentle with yourself. You can’t just talk yourself out of feelings, but what you can do is let yourself be sad for as long as you need to be, and then when you’re ready, try and redirect your energy into something positive and constructive, just for yourself. What I do when I’m trying to move on from something painful is give myself something nice, something that has nothing to do with anyone else. Something like buying myself a cute shirt, making a conscious decision to work on my writing, deciding I’ll go on morning walks by myself.
bi people aren’t evil. we’re ebil.
