Tori Kelly attending the Capitol Records 75th Anniversary Gala (November 15th, 2016)
‘Cause I know who I am, yeah I’m still the same Just a California girl with big dreams Thinking maybe they’ll let me sing songs about real things And baby who knows, maybe I can sell out shows without taking off my clothes
Tori and Ally Brooke at Disneyland - November 11, 2016.
Everything I write about either I have gone through or I know somebody has gone through, so it’s very close to me, but sometimes it’s about taking those feelings and exaggerating on them a little bit: being a bit more dramatic but still keeping them relate able.
Gospel was the root of everything in my house, so there’s a touch of that in everything that I do. If soul counts as a genre, I would also say that’s the common thread throughout everything I do. There’s rock and soul influence, too. The pop element comes at the very end and making the song catchy so people will remember it.

“Deep down, I knew I was good, and I knew I could do it. I needed to get knocked down and to build up a thick skin. Who knows what I would have been singing about otherwise? You have to go through things in order to inspire others with your story.”
get to know me: ten favourite musicians ≡ tori kelly i had to stop trying to copy what was already being done. that’s when it kind of clicked for me that i needed to stop searching for my identity and just let myself develop as an artist first. then i started posting videos on youtube and it was just effortless.
When I really take a step back and kind of look at where I’ve come from, and my journey up ‘til now, it’s all been such a natural progression. It’s been like an organic process. It was never like I woke up and it just kind of hit me. It was very slow. I think the coolest part is that the fans, they really feel like they’re a part of the journey. So I don’t look at it as a bad thing coming from the Internet, social media, or YouTube. I see it as a really cool thing, because I think people can find something to connect with. And in a story like that, you gotta be proud of where you came from. I don’t want to lose that connection.
I didn’t know what I was going to say yet on the album. I was kind of just blank. My team kind of sat me down and they started telling me these things that they had heard within the industry. Stuff like, “She’s a little too plain, a little too boring. … Too nice even.” I was acting like it didn’t faze me at all. That same night when I got home, all of these lyrics started flowing out, like out of nowhere. And I think I was holding in a lot of that for a long time, and once I finished that song I felt like this huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders. - Tori on the song Unbreakable Smile
