*picks up an earthworm and places it next to another earthworm* girls’ night
Sometimes (lots of times) (all the time), I have the urge to do a thing but i dont know what. Or, I feel weird, but can’t figure out why or what to do to fix it. ADHD, executive dysfunction, how I feel, and the phase of the moon can all make it really hard for me to think of a solution to the issue – or even know what the issue IS. And while meds and regular sleep certainly help, for better or for worse my brain just isn’t wired for this.
So, I decided to outsource my brain.
I couldn’t find an app that did what I wanted or was customizable enough for me to fake it. Therefore I built an analog external brain to do my thinking for me.
First, I bought a small, 100-or-so page notebook. It was about eight bucks at my Local Corporate Book Retailer.
Then, I logicked out all the possibilities I might have trouble braining, and started adding each step to the book – kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure novel.
Here’s an example path, which starts with me knowing what I want, and the analog brain telling me how to get there. I twisted my ankle a couple weeks ago and keep forgetting to do things to make it better, so here’s my solution:
[image: Do you know what you want? Yes -> 1, No -> 32. Yes is circled]
Yes, analog brain, I know what I want! Let me flip to page 1.
[Image of Page 1: What do you want to do? Exercise -> 2 is circled. Other options include Read -> 13, Watch something -> 20, Eat ->31, Be creative -> 25, Have an adventure ->26, Clean something ->28, Learn something->29.]
Still know what I want, so I flip to page 2.
[Image page 2: What kind of exercise do you want to do? PT -> 5 is circled. Other options include Weights -> 3, Cardio -> 4, Yoga -> 9, Something quick -> 10, Hiking -> 11, Adventure -> 12]
Skipping some pages now! Since this is meant to bounce me around, it doesn’t make sense to try and read it in order. (On the plus side, that makes it super easy to add new options to any part of the tree).
[Image page 5: What kind of PT? Ankle ->6 is circled. Other options include Knee->6a, Neck->7, Shoulders->8.]
(When I first numbered the pages, 6 and 6a werw stuck together, whoooops)
[Image page 6: A list of ankle PT exercises]
Eyyyyy my external brain showed me how to do my flippin’ PT so my ankle stops hurting! Yay!
But what about when I don’t know wtf is wrong or wtf I want? There’s an app analog brain for that! (Yes I’m aware its called a decision tree or process flow or what have you. Let me have this).
[Image: Do you know what you want? No->32 is circled]
No, spacebook, idfk what’s wrong, I can’t brain today.
[Image page 32: How are you feeling? In pain ->33 is circled. Other options include Overstimulated->37, Understimulated, Panicky->43.]
(As you can see, I have plans to add a page for overstimulated but have not done it yet.)
Oh yeah my ankle kinda hurts, maybe I can do something about that…
[Image of page 33: What kind of pain? Knee/ankle/neck/etc ->35 is circled. Other options include Menstrual nonsense->34, Head->38.]
[Image of page 35: Joint/old injury pain: Take advil, Ice or heat, Massage, Foam roll, Warm bath, PT exercises. Under the last option are subsets Ankle->6 (circled), Neck->6a, Knees->7.]
…Aaaand now I’m back around to my list of ankle PT exercises! And I didnt have to think at all!
Anyway – all it takes to make something like this for yourself is a notebook and some time to think the logic through. You can start by making lists (not in the notebook) of questions you have trouble braining in the moment, and what some solutions are. Then number your pages, and get started!
HEY ALL, IT’S ME J
I’m building an app of the analog brain, so follow this account for updates!
(I have a day job and am doing this for fun, so yes the app will be open source and completely free)
lmao
Is that a baby!?

*ten minute rant* i aint even mad
I'm a server and a coworker of mine had told me he believed his table was a man and his cub. I asked him what he meant by that he proceeded to tell me it's an old gay man and his much younger gay boyfriend. When I asked him how he knew this he said "I just know. I talked to them for about a minute and my gay radar is telling me that."
Not too long after I was told to run their appetizers to their table and when I got there I noticed the younger male was very young. He looked like he was a teenager if I had to guess. The older guy he was with was very old. I suddenly felt uncomfortable that my coworker had talked about them as if they were a couple and at one point said he doesn't want to think about the mental image of them "conjoined" and how that must be awkward for them. Especially when his only evidence was that he had a "gay radar" and he "just knew".
First of all its really insulating to talk about any costumer this way. Secondly it's wrong to accuse someone of this, as it makes no sense and the younger guy looked to be a teenager meaning the older man would be committing pedophilia. It's wrong to suggest this and your only evidence being you "just know"
*washes hands with my tears*
once at my school this guy who had really long hair came in the next day with most of it cut out and nobody recognized him so a rumour went around that he died
Harry Potter Fic Writing Tips #1
Okay so, I’m currently rewriting the entire Harry Potter series with one of my friends so it’s less fucked up because we both feel we can improve the series further in a creative direction that we would love to see portrayed on film.
One of the major things I’m changing in the series is the way they use and perform magic. That entails making spells, curses, and charms to be more versatile and creatively used in the series.
Now, this can greatly apply to fanfics and stories that you create within the Wizarding World as well.
I’ll give you an example of what I mean:
Example:
In Deathly Hallows we see this battle scene happen during what I like to call, ‘The Flight of the Seven Potters’:
“I’m comin’, Harry!” Hagrid yelled from out of the darkness, but Harry could feel the sidecar beginning to sink again: Crouching as low as he could, he pointed at the middle of the oncoming figures and yelled, “Impedimenta!”
The jinx hit the middle Death Eater in the chest: For a moment the man was absurdly spread-eagled in midair as though he had hit an invisible barrier: One of his fellows almost collided with him —
There’s nothing wrong with this sequence at all! In fact, it demonstrates the usage of a spell in combat quite effectively. However, what if we make the spellcasting a little bit more… creative?
“I’m comin’, Harry!” Hagrid yelled from out of the darkness, but Harry could feel the sidecar beginning to sink again. He crouched as low as he could, glimpsing a trio of cloaked Death Eaters. An idea popped into his head as quickly as another flash of green light whizzed past him.
He pointed his wand at the middle of the oncoming figures and yelled, “Duro!”
The spell hit the middle Death Eater’s broom, and it instantly hardened into heavy stone. The man yelped in surprise as he plummeted towards the ground, still holding on to his stone broomstick.
“Carpe Retractum!” Harry bellowed. The spell hit it’s mark, seizing the broom of another hooded figure. He drew his wand backwards, and the broom—with the Death Eater still on it—was pulled forwards, colliding into his comrade.
In my opinion, this feels like a much better battle sequence than the previous one and shows the depth of Harry’s proficiency with magic. Toying with the idea that magic is a versatile tool, and that spells nontraditionally used for combat can be used as such.
This can be used in a variety of situations. For example, using the spell Aqua Eructo to blast someone’s face with water as opposed to putting out fires with it. Using Alarte Ascendere to propel your opponent up high (We know this works on living things because Lockhart used it on a snake). Using Epoximise to stick a target to one location, and then using Everte Statum to throw them back but since their feet are magically stuck and it’s applying the amount of force to throw someone back it would maybe dislocate their joints (?). Using Wingardium Leviosa to levitate an object in front of you to block Avada Kedavra as a makeshift shield as shield charms don’t work against it.
This is all hypothetical anyway, but you can see that just by using other spells that aren’t Stupefy or Expelliarmus, you can make your combat sequences more interesting.
Hope I helped you!
last night i got asked out by not one, not two, but zero people
