Growing up as a male in Nepal- These are research images that I have taken since 2014 in attempt to answer the question, “What’s the definition of a respectful male of a patriarchal society, and how do boys prepare to assume such a role?” The project is slowly evolving and taking shape into a different direction than how it started- it’s been quite a journey. In Nepal, it is estimated over 5 million people are stateless due to an unfavourable provision towards women. While many are celebrating the new constitution last week, the ones without their citizenship continue to flight for their basic rights. To read the full story, go to: http://bit.ly/1KI0zp6
While I was in Nepal, I dabbled in several projects. One being a photo documentary on domestic violence survivors that turned into more of a awareness/ promotional project for a grassroots organization that I teamed up with. In a patriarchal society like Nepal, domestic violence against women is common and usually deemed as marital issues by the general public. Let us also not forget, in Western countries, domestic violence happens behind closed doors and it’s not often revealed. Please support your local NGOs to end domestic violence and to support women and children who survived the ordeal.

A group of early Finnish emigrants settled near the mouth of the Fraser River back in the early 1900s, where it is now known as Finn Slough. They sustained themselves with salmon fishing and farming. This poor stray was probably on its last leg when the photo was taken earlier this year. Dragging its long dirty clumped hair covering its body, it looked more like a living mop. Quietly limping towards the man in the back with a truck, perhaps trying to get some loving attention as it once did, only to meet with heavy beating and cursing. Without even making a sound, it slowly crawled back to this concrete block, even more injured than it was, and again, these two men in the foreground started to attack it. Knowing that I couldn't stop them since there was a mob of men cheering them on in the surrounding area, I took photographs to record the abuse. The men quickly stopped knowing that they were being photographed but also diverted their attention towards me. As I walked away quickly to avoid any real trouble, I felt horrible that I couldn't have done more. I traveled to many places around the world and have yet to witness such horrendous act of public animal abuse. These men's action is absolutely disgusting and needs to be stopped. Taiwan has long to be known as one of the worst nations as pet owners, since many didn't consider the amount of responsibilities of owning a life, and viewed their pets more as merchandise and accessories at the point of purchase. Knowing the problem, the government has yet to come up with a viable solution. I hope this poor soul was rescued soon after the photo was taken, however, its chances of survival were slim, and was likely to be put down right away if found by the authority. Another scene from Monga, Taipei, Taiwan at night. Just across from this normal looking night street scene are old school "tea houses". In there, you will find women serving food to their male customers, often one or more women per customer. Sort of like renting a girlfriend type of scenario. Some places obviously offer more services than just conversations, and women customers are not welcomed to go in there. This culture was inherited from Japan's 50 years of colonization before WWII. In this picture, a shoe fixer works well into the night, fixing working girls' leather boots right beside a food stand. I wish I had more guts to slow down and take more pictures of what's actually happening, but the proximity between myself and the crowd made me slightly uncomfortable. Next time if I return perhaps.
