queen munjeong’s birthday event. with @dalhyunsoo·· .·

She got him there. A few of the party guests began to gather around, murmuring words and giving judgmental eyes but that didn’t stop her from pushing the trouble further. “That’s what I had in mind.” Feeling somewhat victorious, Yingluo wanted to say more so that she could slap some sense into the hungry wolf. “My lord, I think you should let me enjoy this night on my own, unless—” But she was interrupted. For the better.
He should be mingling, he knew very well that that was expected of him and if his father found out he wasn’t he would hear about how he shouldn’t have missed such an important opportunity. In Hyunsoo’s opinion, he had enough time to do so and had been doing enough mingling so now he was just moving around the wing of the palace the party was taking place, not staying anywhere for too long to avoid people who might try to approach him to talk to him. Of course, as he noticed the Chinese Ambassador’s daughter and Lord Lee who looked at her in such a way that made it clear that he wanted her gone, he regretted the promise he made to her father.
The Chinese Ambassador had asked Hyunsoo to keep an eye on Yingluo during the party and he had given his word that he would but he didn’t expect to find her in that kind of situation. With pursed lips, he made his way towards her and caught the last part of what she was saying which had him wondering what she had told Lord Lee to make him that angry. Whatever it was, he knew that it was best to take Yingluo away from the situation but of course, he knew that he would have to deal with Lee later just because the man disliked people getting involved in his business and not getting his way more than anything else.
“I apologize for the intrusion, Lord Lee but the Chinese Ambassador send me to find his daughter and bring her to him. It seems that he wants to introduce her to a dignitary and it can’t be delayed.” He offered the man a sheepish smile as if he was truly sorry to inconvenient him but it was obvious that he was trying to remind the man who Yingluo’s father was and that it wouldn’t do him any good to get on his bad side. Yes, the Zhao’s didn’t have “power” in Korea but Hyunsoo knew that the emperor wouldn’t like hearing that his ambassador or his family had been treated poorly and Lord Lee needed to be reminded of this.
Turning his attention to Yingluo, he knew that it was possible that she would refuse to follow him or try to find more information about the dignitary which would put him on the spot but he hoped she would realize that it was in her best interest to stay quiet for once. “Lady Zhao, if you could follow me, please. We don’t want to keep your father waiting, do we?” His tone was light and cheerful but with narrowed eyes, he hoped to convey that he wasn’t leaving without her.

then she paused, another idea growing in her mind. something to mess with his mind just a little.
“i haven’t taken a lover yet…now that..” she chuckled at the word ‘yet’ “should i do that? should i see how far my clan’s loyalty to me extends? what does it mean to be loyal to them when they would shove me aside at any moment.” and now her glass was finished, so she reached for another. if only to upset him.
In Hyunsoo’s opinion, all children should only strive to make their parents proud and to bring honor to their families but it was obvious by talking to Song Jiyoung that she didn’t think the same way. How could her father allowed her to be so insolent? More importantly, he was surprised that no one had put her back in her place but he wondered as she scoffed if she only did this kind of thing when the men were too drunk to care. As she talked about her father, for a moment, he thought that she would express guilt even if just a small amount of it but he should have known better.
She was right when she said that she was only valuable if she had a son but that was how life was. A woman was expected to bear children while the man provided his wife with everything else and if she wanted more, she was in for a rude awakening. “Lady Song, drinking is not the problem, the problem is you drinking too much and making a fool of yourself.” With a charming smile, he told her this but it was obvious by looking at his eyes that he was irritated by her. “Rumors and gossip can ruin your chances of finding a good man, after all.” His words were a jab at her previous words because after listening to her, he was under the impression that she didn’t want to marry anyone especially someone that her parents chose.
Furrowing his eyebrows, he stared at her as he tried to figure out if she was being serious but truthfully, he wouldn’t be surprised if she would take a lover as she put it just to prove her point. “You can’t expect your clan to be loyal when you are not loyal to them and I would be careful to who you say that kind of thing.” A stern look was sent her way but mostly, he felt sorry for her because if she continued down this road, he was sure she would end up dead. Her father should have really done his job instead of letting her turn into this kind of woman.

“ your smile looks a little forced.”
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @haehahn
The words took him by surprise but mostly it made him annoyed at himself because his smile was supposed to look anything but forced. Of course, after dealing with men that only said stupid things, it was a miracle he was not scowling at the moment but that didn’t excuse the fact that he failed at hiding his true feelings. As he turned to face the person that had noticed his slip up, he wasn’t sure if he should relax or tense up because while Hahn was his wife’s youngest brother which meant they were at the moment on the same side, he had never been able to read the younger man.
“Your Highness, it’s been a while, have you been fairing well?” He asked the younger as he bowed and instead of focusing on his comment, he decided to change the subject. After all, he was not comfortable with talking about his shortcomings with Hahn and he would rather hear more about the young prince. He had been married to his eldest sister for two years but because of his travels, he found himself unable to get to know them. He hoped to remedy that now that he planned to take some time off but as he learned more about the royal children, he realized that they were so different from San and Yeonhwa.
“ you wouldn’t dare.”
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @dalxhynshk
Raising his eyebrows, Hyunsoo stared at his brother as his lips curled slowly into a smile because it was amusing to him that his brother was actually telling him not to do something when he knew that would make him do exactly the opposite. While he knew that as a father, Hyunshik had the last said on everything that came to his children, Hyunsoo thought he had the right to spoil his nephews and he was not going to back down on doing just that. “You know that I will do it especially if I think it’s my right to do so, which is, as their uncle but we can compromise if you are so against it.” He told his brother, relenting instead of pushing because the last thing he wanted was to fight with his brother.
“Would you rather I do it behind your back?” He asked Hyunshik, curiosity mixed in his tone as he shook his head and look away from his brother because it wasn’t like he was taking his nephews away on the trip he proposed next week, they were too young for that after that. “It will not happen tomorrow, Shik and you can take a break from your job if you are so against your children going by themselves. Heck, we can all go together. I just want them to see more than our world and it would do you some good if you saw it too.” Even though seeing the world made him a little cynical, the sights Hyunsoo saw while traveling were too beautiful to not share them with his family especially his nephews.
“ your smile looks a little forced.”
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @haexjy
Although he put a smile on his face and tried his best to pretend that the conversation didn’t bother him, Hyunsoo didn’t need this man to question him about his private life. Was the fact that he had been married two years and had no children any of the man’s business? No, even though it seemed like the man thought otherwise and it wasn’t like he could simply leave because that would show the older man that he had gotten to him. As the man continued expressing his opinion, Hyunsoo found himself thinking of the ways he could ruin the man’s life even if he wasn’t planning on carrying any of those plans.
The heavens seem to be on his side as the man was called away and still keeping the smile on his face, he watched as the man left. He hadn’t noticed that someone had joined him and noticing who it was, he bowed before replying to the princess’ words. “Does it? I apologize, your Highness, a day like this should only be filled with happiness.” He meant what he said as he turned to face the princess and offering her a smile that he hoped looked genuine. “Are you enjoying yourself?”
" this night will be unforgettable."
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @sevlhae
After being friends with San since they were schoolboys and being married to Yeonhwa, Hyunsoo had grown used to the princes and princess but there were some of them that he couldn’t figure out. One of those was princess Seul and as she approached him, he found himself a little on his guard. Of course, there was no trace of that as he listened to her speak but then again, he was used to putting a front around most of the people around them.
“Do you reckon there will be songs about tonight, Your Highness?” He asked with a polite smile once he bowed and while he wasn’t sure if the night would be unforgettable, he thought that there would be someone that wrote a song about tonight. After all, it was the birthday of the crown prince’s mother and with everyone that had power in attendance, it would be foolish to not record this in some way.

“ i didn’t expect to see you here.”
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @dalruihan
As always, Hyunsoo drank as little as possible even though he could drink well but he believed that it was wiser to be as sober as possible especially in a gathering where everyone that mattered was in attendance. Quite used to parties like this one, he held a half-full drink on his hand and listened as a minister talked to him about what he thought when it came to the way the country was headed. His father was nowhere to be found and so Hyunsoo was left to hear the man’s opinions instead of his father. Any other day, he would be more than willing to listen but the man had his share of drinks and Hyunsoo didn’t want to be around when he began loudly stating who he thought was doing a horrible job.
“I apologize but I see you need another drink, let me fetch you a new one.” He offered the older man with a charming smile and before the man could respond, Hyunsoo was making his escape with no intentions of finding that drink. On his way away from the man though, his eyes noticed a familiar face and he headed towards the young woman that seemed a little bit lost. Of course, before he could say anything she spoke and with a warm smile, he nodded. “Lady Xie, it’s a pleasure to see you again.” He greeted her and while it had been a while since they have seen each other, he was surprised that she was talking to him. Then again, he always went to see her father so there was no reason for her to talk to him.
“Are you enjoying the festivities?” His chinese still needed a lot of work but he hoped that she could understand him.
In the same place, at the same time

this was her third glass of wine and she was hiding it fairly well. as long as she didn’t talk much or move around. ( because there was a little sway with her movements. ) “i wouldn’t dare to drink another glass?” how could that even be a question for him? “oh royal ambassador.” she raised the cup to her lips and took a small sip. “i would very much dare.”
The thought of disgracing his father never entered Hyunsoo’s mind and if anything, he knew that he would rather die than to do that. He was a good father, maybe not the best but Hyunsoo knew that he did everything to protect them, to keep them safe in this dangerous world. It was this reason that he never understood why some of the yaban children rebelled against their family and while he understood the want for a different kind of life, he thought it was wiser to either accept their fate or leave. If there was a young woman that he was sure didn’t hold the same beliefs as him, that was Song Jiyoung who at the current moment was drinking more than a young woman of her rank should.
He was not the kind of man that openly judge people but with Jiyoung he found himself unable to just walk away before reminding her who her father was. Somehow their conversation moved from that to Hyunsoo saying that she wouldn’t dare to drink more and he realized as she smirked at him that if anything, his words would make her drink more. A sigh almost left Hyunsoo’s lips as the younger girl replied to his comment and the more she spoke, the more he wanted to leave. It wasn’t his job to look after the crown prince’s tutor especially since he belonged to the faction Hyunsoo’s family opposed but the girl was so infuriating that he simply stared at her as she continued drinking and talking.
“Lady Song, you must truly want to bring shame to your father with such childish behavior.” He replied with a higher than you tone but he doubted that anything he would say could change her mind. If anything after what she had done, it seemed like she would do exactly the opposite. “Don’t you feel any loyalty to your clan? I assume you don’t since you are always doing things that reflect badly on your father.”

the corner of her lips quirked upwards into a genuine smile at his words. “they are hardly as beautiful as the wild flowers you can see outside when you’re traveling, but i hoped a bit of nature wouldn’t make your miss the road so much. and your study room could use more life.” it’s a silent, sad space most of time, so she wanted to make it more lively — gladly, he wasn’t allergic to polen. “i’ve always wanted to collect some myself, the ones i’ve heard that grow in the mountains… you could come with me, if this is not difficult.” the words escaped between her lips before she could stop herself, inviting him to this kind of activity was a bit foolish of her. what was she thinking? “nevermind. i know you’re busy.”
A small smile appeared on his lips when she agreed with him because he was relieved that she was the kind of person to enjoy of little things like the way the sky looked. He often wondered after he found out that he would be marrying Yeonhwa if they would be able to be happy together and while he knew that they needed a lot of time to get to know each other, he felt hopeful right at that moment because of her answer. Adding that to her next words, he felt touched by her understanding that this celebration would be anything but fun for him since he had to deal with men that were simply looking for his weaknesses.
“For the Queen, I am sure the stars will only allow good things to happen.” He truly believed that to appease the King, the majority of the nobility would be in their best behavior and if there were any evil deeds, it would be behind doors. “I admit that I do not look forward to all the politics but I promise I will not let that ruin the festivities. I thank you for your concern and if there is any instance during the festivities that you need me, please don’t hesitate to ask.” His voice lowered in volume as he moved a little closer to Yeonhwa to avoid any of the attendants nearby from hearing his admittance about his dislike for politics and there was also the fact that he only wanted her to hear what he was saying. He took his role as her husband very seriously and he wanted her to know that he would be there for her.
Once again, he realized how thoughtful she was and a thankful smile appeared on his lips as he looked at her but as she continued speaking, his expression changed to one of surprise. He hadn’t expected her to ask him to go with her to collect wildflowers and while in the past he would have said that he was too busy for that, the fact that she was the one that used that line made him realize that he needed to go with her. “I have been working hard, I think a day out is exactly what I need, wouldn’t you agree?” He asked with a conspirational smile that he wasn’t even aware of as he glanced at her before realizing that they should go in even though at the moment, he wished they could stay there for a little longer.
“Shall we go in?” He didn’t want to cut their time short but he knew that Yeonhwa had an obligation to be there when her mother arrived back to the castle and the last thing he wanted was to be responsible for her to be late.

Hyunsoo should have been used to how long celebrations were and what usually came with each of them but even though he had gone to many throughout his life, he didn't think he would ever get used to them. If he could relax, then maybe he could enjoy himself like some of the other people around him did but even when he was just his father's son, he felt like he had to put on a show and now as the husband of one of the King's daughters, he knew he had to be careful of what he said or did.
Aside from that, he knew he was expected to talk to those that he liked as well as those he didn't and as he looked around the room, he noticed Yeon Kikwang before he decided to approach him. The younger man's family might be sarim but Hyunsoo had learned long ago that it was better to be friendly to the enemy than hostile; they would either think he was dumb or could sway their way if they learned what he wanted. Kikwang also seemed to be enjoying himself at the moment which meant he could be more willing to spill some information and it was better than to deal with Kikwang’s father.
“Lord Yeon, I apologize for interrupting since you seem to be enjoying the party very well by yourself but I haven’t gotten the chance to greet you or your father. I hope he is fairing well as well as the rest of your family.” He offered the younger a friendly smile and then a nod before looking around the room once more. Talking like this, as if he had no problem with those that belong to the sarim had always come easy to Hyunsoo and he wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not but for now, he hoped that the younger didn’t ask too many questions. Then again, maybe it was better if he did and that way he could use those questions to his advantage.
“ it’s a small target, but aim for her heart. ”
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @daljiwoo
As he escaped excused himself from a boring discussion between his father and another official, Hyunsoo hoped to have some time for himself instead of dealing with pleasantries and small talk. Once he had enough time to recover, he would be just fine since he was used to this kind of thing thanks to his work but for now, he nursed a drink as he looked around the room.
His eyes halted on a girl that looked familiar but at the same time she was too young for her to be the woman he was reminded of. Did he stare at her for longer than he thought he had? That was the only explanation for the words that Lady Moon uttered and looking at her, he furrowed his eyebrows. “I beg your pardon, Lady Moon, but I am not sure what you mean.” He replied while his expression remained the same as the one that appeared when he heard her words: one of confusion.
Whether she meant that he should hurt the girl that he didn’t have any ill will against by making her fall in love or encouraging him to cheat on his wife, he wasn’t sure and he didn’t know why she would say something like that to him especially here where anyone could hear. Then again, maybe he was being a little paranoid but he didn’t need another reason to look over his shoulder.
“ were you following me?”
queen munjeong birthday prompts - @haexsan
Hyunsoo thought he had been careful, making sure he kept his distance to hide the fact that he was following the supreme commander of the military but as the other man turned to face him before asking the question, it was obvious that he had not been as careful as he thought. Straightening his back, he stared at the prince for a couple of seconds and then broke into a smile that only his family and closest friends got to see.
“Your Highness, I admit that I was indeed following you but it seems that that is the only way I can greet you.” He tried his best to keep the smile as small as he could but as he finished talking, his smile had grown into a full grin. Since he had become a royal ambassador he spent less time at home and more time in the road which meant that it had been a while since he had seen or talked to Yi San. “Can I have some of your time, Supreme Commander? There are some matters that I would like to discuss with you.” It was true that he wanted to talk to San about something but it was not something important as he made it sound.
After all, he wanted to talk to Yi San and not to the prince or the supreme commander but anyone that was eavesdropping didn’t need to know that. Of course, whenever he was inside the palace, he felt like everything he said could be heard by someone and he had no idea how any of the princes and princesses dealt with that feeling.
