Only the subtlest metaphors on this Tumblr.
This works as a metaphor for children but also it works perfectly well when played totally straight because horse people are actually like this
it literally took me three solid readings through this to realize that it wasn’t necessarily about horse people, because they are exactly like this
all the ears
It wouldn’t be my blog if it didn’t have at least one picture of Freddie on it
July 2020. The orange horse was good again today. Hopefully he hasn’t burned through all his cooperativeness budget for the week and is saving some for Sunday.
Someone loved his popsicle 💞🥺
tiny babey!
some good progress with the kids today & Dom was v good riding too,
mr fluffy snowball aka nameless newbie:
we did some work on touching back legs & picking up back feet he snatches & flails and sometimes fully kicks a leg out & I know that he only had his feet handled for the farrier and not as part of his daily life so it’s still a bit new to him,
I think also he probably just had a foot grabbed from under him and held onto because he really wasn’t happy with it and he’s otherwise a fairly confident chap, so just spent some time touching & rewarding & just being gentle with picking up and rewarding him for being calm & he seemed to get it really well in the evening (did a bit this morning and some more this evening) so I think we can start cracking on with - dangling things around his legs - putting rugs on, with leg straps, and just kinda ungently rather than super slowly - having a bath, this could be a total crapshoot haha but he’s grey so he’s got to be good at it
hebe:
yesterday she took 30 minutes of ignoring & creeping closer to her to get near and touch, this evening she happily stood by the door as I got her hay & water, wandered up to me in her pen to see if she could earn some food. I am SO glad I started doing +R with her, she really wasn’t a fan of the more ‘traditional’ method, she got pretty hacked off with it ha. She’s still a little unsure and it’s a work in progress, I won’t move onto anything else until I can do this because I really want to be able to turn her out and know I can (or at least have a good chance at) catching her but we are also working on face touching (soo much better, yesterday she flinched half a mile today she is wary but ok + knows that being still = reward) and a bit of front of body touching
it’s going to be interesting to see how she reacts to another new person again, I’m not optimistic the vet will be able to get near her but I have 2 people on 2 different days who are visiting that I’m going to make help me train her
also going to be interesting when she moves to the livery yard I have some concerns but I think most are unfounded (just, with people giving treats, trying to touch her when she’s not ready etc... I’m going to be THAT high maintenance owner aren’t I...)
is struggling to get his head around the idea that humans can be up high?
tol boi
time to yell @ the void about ponies,
new boy (rlly needs a name ahh) is so perfect ah I’m in love, he’s mega cute but also I just love his attitude, someone did a really good job with teaching him to lead because he’s been super nervous about things coming off the trailer & the scary alpacas but he never jogged or anything he always stayed next to me. I rlly love his manners (mostly) and his personality is starting to come out, he’s a total sweetie, he really likes people.
He’s a bit muggy for treats which I wasn’t expecting, they said they didn’t ‘do’ tidbits but I don’t believe them, will have to work on that because I use treats for trick training + general rewards but wanna make sure he’s not trying to eat everyone all the time.
Feet, I think he’s only had them done by the farrier and not them, and probably just grabbed and held on to, he’s certainly not used to it though some of it is trust in me - he’s gotta be used to having other people do his feet but it’s fine we can work on it. I really like the progress he’s had with me doing them over the 2 days, he obviously gets it but doesn’t get that its a normal part of life that everyone is gonna do and he still isn’t going to get eaten.
He’s so calm, that’s not to say things don’t worry him, a fair amount does, he’s not done much of being inside and doing pony things (what are rugs, what are boots and WHAT is an alpaca), but he deals with them so much better than what I’d expect (idk if thats him or Dom or both), he’s fairly happy to go well if you say it’s ok then i’ll at least try and as long as you don’t push him (obviosuly he is baby horse) then he’s super happy with it.
I think my goals for him for the next couple of days for him are practicing with feet & getting some other people to pick them up, generally just desensitising him with the back legs because he’s a bit !! about that getting used to rugs & stuff on his back
He’s also fairly jumpy with limbs, I don’t think he’s been hit or anything I think he’s just a horse reacting to things but sometimes you gotta do pointing (and also the size he is he will most likely be a kids pony and even though it;ll b a 14+ probably still gotta be ok with kids & kids have limbs everywhere)
and I think that’s it for now? Just some fairly basic stuff but I’m not 100% sure what he does know and I think he was fairly overwhelmed when he first moved in so anything he did know a little bit he was too preoccupied with that to be able to also deal w some of the more challenging ( for him) things
longer term I’d like to see how he reacts to being bathed, he’s grey it’s going to be a common part of his life, pop a bridle on - apparently he’s worn one last year but we shall see, he;s used to the headcollar going over his head so not much new there except the bit, get him going out for some walks along the lane and just around and over stuff at home.
