That night you smelt like coffee, perfume and freshly lit cigarettes. That night you told me you loved me and it sounded fluent as if you’ve been practicing for this moment. That night you whispered “come back to bed baby,” and the sound wasn’t foreign in your throat even though you had never said it to me. That night your breathing steadied and for the first time in a year you fell asleep without a goodnight kiss or even just “goodnight.” That morning you were so eager to get dressed. That morning you ignored me like I was a ghost standing in your hall way carrying the burden of love on my shoulders and you didn’t want to face it any longer. That morning you left me, as well as a shirt that didn’t belong to either of us. That morning you said “I just don’t love you anymore.” That afternoon your excuse of leaving in such a hurry was, “babe, I’ve got to be home by four.” That afternoon you still smelt like coffee, perfume and a hint of cigarettes, was the afternoon that, despite all the evidence you had left, you looked me in the eyes and swore "I didn’t sleep with her."
