Pathetic confession time.

I'm a 37 year old woman with a family (spouse and kid).

I'm replaying Animal Crossing New Horizons (like everyone else in the world) and time traveled back to January because I finally got my switch returned to me. I didn't realize the date when I opened my game up, and Isabelle announced that today was my Birthday. I've not played the game on my birthday so I hadn't experienced what happens next.

My favorite villager gets me and brings me to her house for a surprise party and IRL I started to ugly cry.

The last time someone planned a birthday party for me that didn't involve me helping plan it was when I was 14. My last planned birthday party (that ended up being a real fucking shit-show) was when I was 24. Since then my birthdays have been pretty much "what do you want for your birthday?" Followed by me planning what we eat, my cake, and sometimes even what present I got.

I don't know why lines of code throwing me a surprise birthday party is making me cry in my car on my lunch break.

SO! I finally sat down and watched Guillermo Del Toro's "Frankenstein", and I have some thoughts.

Is it a beautifully crafted piece of media? Undoubtedly, yes. Casting? Chef's kiss 🤌🏼. What made me stop watching it on my first go-around however was Victor's relationship with his parents.

For those of you who have NOT read the book, Victor's parents are completely infatuated with each other. They have Victor, who becomes their shining joy of a child. They want more children and for a minute are unable to, so they adopt Elizabeth Lavenza to be his sister/future spouse, only later who have William. All around a happy family of 5. Victor's dad encourages his interest in science, but also tries to steer him away from some of the more radical and fanciful pseudo-sciences he expresses interest in like reanimation.

While Victor is off at college, Elizabeth contracts scarlet fever, and his mother then contracts it as well while trying to nurse her back to health. Mrs. Frankenstein eventually succumbs, and dies which is the key moment that makes Victor go "Fuck it, we're going to bring her back." Very Full Metal Alchemist, Very Alphonse Elric.

I feel like, had we stuck to that as being the reason why Victor went down this whole reanimation rabbit hole, it would feel more like Victor was the young stupid college student who fucked up on his science experiment, vs the absolutely bat shit and abusive psychopath that Oscar Isaacs played him as. Added bonus, we totally avoid the emotionally incestuous relationship we got between Del Toro's characters.

And not to be a Victor apologist, but The Creature was actually quite monstrous in the book. His first few murders were accidental, but he then hold that physical power over Victor to manipulate him into doing what he wants (like agreeing to make him a companion). Is Victor innocent in this? No, absolutely not, he was the one to create The Creature, and should've done the right thing by owing that responsibility and teaching it vs running away and hiding from his fuck up.

As far as film adaptations go, Del Toro's Frankenstein is world's better than the 1931 Universal Pictures horror film series, and hold more true to the spirit of Mary Shelley's novel, but is more of a "inspired by" interpretation than a book to film adaptation.

I know having a truly faithful book to film adaptation is never going to happen with any story, but sometimes I just want film makers to actually read and digest the media they want to adapt for the screen. Is that too much to ask?

I will never hide the fact that I was a Potter-head, emphasis on the word 'was.'

Do I still have my books from when I was growing up? Yes, I do. I will still go back and reread parts I liked from time to time, but I refuse to give a penny more to someone who is actively using her gains to harm people.

Let me be as clear as possible: My current books were all bought through second-hand sellers (my original books were considered "family copies" and stayed with my parents when I moved out on my own). Any HP merch I have is either not officially licenced (I.e. Fan Made) or was purchased before the existence of Twitter in Ye Olde Dark Ages.

I will not go to "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter." I will not watch the new HBO series, and I will not play Hogwarts Mysteries. I have even asked family members who know that I liked HP to not get me anything HP related for events like Christmas or Birthdays.

Harry Potter was my gateway into developing a life long passion for reading, for which I am grateful. But unfortunately JKR has shown that she doesn't care about people like myself who consider themselves on the Ace spectrum, or like my transgender brothers and sisters. She doesn't even really show that she cares about women or thinks they're as important as men in her writing, even if she professes to be a "Feminist."

And so, I will be looking to other fantasy reads for the sense of comfort and that "Good will triumph over Evil" in these dark and trying times.
