Many male salsa dancers want shoes that give them more height. It’s empowering, sometimes it’s more comfortable to dance and turn when you have more lift, and if you have a partner who’s taller than you (especially with her heels on!), your own extra height can make partner dancing a lot more seamless.

Fortunately, there are many options for salsa shoes with an extra-high lift for men—and, in fact, most men’s salsa shoes have a higher heel than the average dress shoe anyway. If you’re just starting to shop around, ask your local dance studio if they have a pair you can rent or borrow to test out various heights in action. You might find that just a few centimeters can make all the difference when you hit the dance floor.

What could be better than a free salsa class? Sometimes, it’s a salsa class that’s reasonably priced! For starters, sometimes you get what you pay for.

Exceptions aside, what about those free classes that truly are free? They might be offered at a community center by someone looking to give back or improve their skills as an instructor. These might sound like the ultimate freebie, but watch out. Poor quality of both instruction and your fellow dancers might make these free classes worth every (lacking) penny.

Salsa choke is a uniquely Colombian rhythm that skyrocketed to (local) popularity circa 2008. It has obviously strong salsa roots, but also mixes in reggaeton, electronica, house music and urban vibes.

Thanks to the slightly hip hop infusion of salsa choke, the dancing that evolved along with it also got a little more urban. “Choke” translates to “bump” in Spanish, and SalsaChoke literally means “Salsa bump.” It marries the bump and grind style of dancing with traditional salsa moves, bringing dancers closer and igniting a new level of passion. Simultaneously, the one on one style of salsa choke split into more of a group dynamic. Now, SalsaChoke can mean either a closer, “dirtier” form of dancing as well as a type of group line dance. The moves, much like the Cupid Shuffle or even Electric Slide, are well-known and gets everyone on the dance floor.

Siete is a fundamental intermediate Casino or Salsa Cubana move where the leader redirects the follower similar to a vacila. Rather than letting go, however, the leader keeps the left hand low and "wraps up" the follower while slightly stepping to the left. After tapping on "4" the leader unwraps the follower.

No matter how big the city or widespread the salsa craze, there’s one maddening trend for self-proclaimed morning people: It seems like salsa classes are always in the evening.

I live in Portland, Oregon, one of the fastest growing, most popular American cities for young adults. Carlos Valdés (November 4, 1926 – December 4, 2007), better known as Patato, was a Cuban-born American conga player. In 1954 he emigrated from La Habana to New York City where he continued his prolific career as a sideman for several jazz and Latin music ensembles, and occasionally as a bandleader. He invented and patented the tunable conga drum which revolutionized the use of the instrument in the US. Tito Puente once called him “the greatest conguero alive today”.
