(Comic of a stick-figure girl with a flower in her hair. She is smiling with her eyes closed when someone off-panel shouts, “FAKERS!” Her eyes pop open and she says, “What you say ‘bout chronic illness patients?” She tosses her flower to another stick-figure girl. “Hold my flower,” she says. The other girl replies, “Kick his butt, girl. I got yo flower.”]
I totally realized too late that yesterday was International Women’s Day so here’s an ancient-meme-turned-comic because even Susan knows when to have a sister’s back. ✊️
"Do I Want To Stay Awake All Night Because of My Pain or Because of My Pain Meds?" by Fall Out Boy
Reblog this if you are a service dog team account!
I want to follow all of you❤
PSA: Asking "Is your dog friendly?" IS NOT THE SAME AS ASKING "Can I pet your dog?" My dog is VERY friendly but he is WORKING. No touchy!!
Crutches came today! I added a little bag on the side. So far they are fantastic. I will post a more thorough review after I've had them for a few days. :-)
The prescribing of opioids has dropped every year since 2012 and is at 10 year low — and yet drug overdose deaths have skyrocketed.
“Pain patients are being denied treatment and involuntarily tapered off of opioid medications, even if they’ve never shown any risks of abuse.”
Pain patients today are not so fortunate. In our effort to thwart the genuine problem of drug overdoses, we are taking life-sustaining medicine away from suffering people.
Long-term, legitimate pain patients who have relied on opioid analgesics can no longer fill their prescriptions in the many states that set maximum dosage and supply limits, often of three to seven days.
Even in states that contain exceptions for long-term pain care, insurance companies and pharmacy policies use such laws as a reason to deny coverage or fills. Pain patients are being denied treatment and involuntarily tapered off of opioid medications, even if they’ve never shown any risks of abuse.
The Department of Veterans Affairs, which sponsored one of the first systematic efforts to discontinue opioid treatment, recently issued an abstract reporting that the results were not fewer overdose deaths but increased suicide mortality.
Welp.
I will be starting to use forearm crutches as soon as they come in the mail. I'm trying these purple Smartcrutch brand crutches. I am a bit nervous about trying to handle crutches and a service dog at the same time, but I need something more than the cane I've been using. Will report back after I've tried them for a bit. Anyone have tips for a first time forearm crutch user?
I hope this is ok if I post this here but if anyone has RA can you maybe help me answer a few questions? I was in the hospital last summer for 2 weeks with ridiculous tachycardia and some chest pain/ shortness of breath. They basically tested me for everything and then eventually sent me home with a diagnosis of pericarditis (inflammation around the lining of my heart) which I had a diagnosis of a month previous when I had a bad cold and a resting bpm of like 168. 1/2
So they tested me for lupus and it came back negative and I think they also tested me for RA but I’m not sure. My CRP was really super high too (In the 20s) and when I left it was lower. But now I’m having extreme bilateral joint pain, swelling/redness/heat in my joints, bad stiffness and this is all in my fingers, wrists, knees, hips ankles and elbows. 2/3 sorry!
My doctor put me on indomethicin (25g 3x/day) and she said if that doesn’t help in about 2 weeks she’s gonna send me for labs? The only other thing I can think of is that it’s the cold Canadian weather (it was really sudden this year) and so that’s why she put me on the anti-inflammatory to see if it helped. But is it possible to have developed RA since the summer? If anyone could share their diagnosis story with me I’d be really thankful!! 3/3
Can anyone with RA help our spoonie friend out?
I was tested for RA a few years ago and did not meet the criteria for a diagnosis. About 4 months ago, I was tested again and without a doubt I now have severe RA. So even though I've had symptoms for a long time it only just recently developed into full-blown RA and I started treatment. So it would make sense to me that your RA could develop or worsen quickly, especially given the extra cold weather.
Please feel free to message me and I would be happy to answer questions the best I can and give you some support. Good luck. -G
Doctors insisting that all women take pregnancy tests before having an X-ray is sexist and paternalistic. I’m a lesbian who’s never been sexually active, but I’m always required to take a pregnancy test “just in case.” This practice reflects the general culture of doctors not believing and trusting women, and it needs to change.
When I was in college, I started vomiting all the damned time. It was eventually (mis)diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but before then I ended up taking like twenty pregnancy tests! Sometimes two in one visit because they didn’t believe the first result! I was so sick I had no interest in sex, wasn’t having sex, but obviously if a person with a vagina is vomiting, they must be pregnant!
These days, they still routinely give me pregnancy tests before various things, despite the fact that I had sterilization surgery like five years ago *and* am on birth control pills to control my cycle *and* haven’t had sex but once in the last year because my MS is screwing with my sex drive! But gotta get the money for that nearly instant and useless test!
Gosh, that’s awful. I’m so sorry.
During college my then-undiagnosed illnesses became so out of control that I was in the ER several times a week. No matter what was specifically wrong that visit, no matter what they did for me medically, the first step was having to take a pregnancy test and wait sometimes hours for that to return before anything else was considered.
During one visit I finally put my foot down. I explained that there was absolutely no way I was pregnant and that I would not submit to a pregnancy test. They then blatantly lied to my face and said they needed a urine test for "something else". An hour later a different nurse can in and cheerfully informed me I was not pregnant and could go home.
Years earlier, as a teenager, I was in the ER and was asked if I could be pregnant. I jokingly said, "If I am pregnant, I am carrying baby Jesus." I was held for psychiatric screening because the doctor thought I sincerely believed I was carrying the second coming of Christ. It's so bizarre it's almost funny.
Almost.
