something i really liked about love simon was ethan. he was a little cliché at times but when he sat and talked with simon and says it hasn’t been easy for him, i was concerned it was going to be something melodramatic. instead it was just telling simon that his mother still tells his grandparents that he’s straight, and that she revels in those moments, in the lie. it was so real (like maybe too real lmao) but it wasn’t one of these furthering over the top forms of homophobia (which ethan was still subject to but brushed off with dignity and panache). he was so complete in that moment, because the rawness of that micro-aggression is something absolutely every cishet person is capable of, something that’s subtler but more damaging. it’s a finer layer of rejection that’s in many ways more painful and enduring and i hope straight people came out of that film more thoughtful to what they say to the lgbt members of their lives.

one of my favourite things about Love, Simon was how it managed to capture so many little gay nuances that resontate with every gay person, like how Simon couldn’t manage to say he was gay outloud at the begining, or the unique feeling that comes when youre about to come out to someone and youre trying to force the worlds out and your heart is beating so fast. these little things are easily recognizable to anyone who has been closested but straight people dont give them a second thought or recognize the significance
