My question. Why do you give a damn about who is a fan of whom?! IT’S A FANDOM!!! FAN is short for FANATIC. People can say what they want to say about anyone as long as no one’s rights are being compromised. Last I checked, Meryl, Maks, and Peta were in lines of work where public DISCUSSION of them is to be expected. They are public figures.People ARE gonna talk about them. If being on SM sites talking about them freaks YOU out then get the hell off of the sites. IT’S THAT SIMPLE. Wanna be passionate about something that actually matters? Open a newspaper. Turn on the TV. MURDERS are being committed daily for no justifiable reason at all. Homelessness. Abuse. Starvation. You getting my point yet??!!

Nothing you said makes any sense. “People can say what they want to say about anyone as long as no one’s rights are being compromised.” If you believe that, then people also have the right to complain about the things people are saying. It doesn’t work only one way. Secondly, that’s absurd. Telling lies doesn’t always warrant libel, but do you have no sense of ethics? And is it so far beyond belief that people are getting upset at the FANATICAL reaches and lengths people go through with this Maksyl shit?

Just because they are public figures doesn’t mean they should be forced to be harassed online and it’s very telling of you as a person that you think that they should be subject to that. There is a limit and people have definitely overreached the way the tweet at celebrities, particularly in this situation, and it’s disgusting and uncalled for, not to mention crazy at times.

The whole “if it bothers you, ignore it” method does not work. Ignoring harassment does not work. That’s not a viable or sensible solution. The solution to harassment is to actually stop the harassment. (You’ll notice I’m calling it harassment because of the intense and aggressive things anyone can read being hurled at these three people on multiple social media sites.)

Also, it’s entirely possible to care about multiple things at once. Human beings are vastly intelligent creatures, just because someone is calling this out doesn’t mean they aren’t passionate about ending other things in the world and it’s naive of you to think so. Do you know this person that submitted this? Do you know 100% for sure that they aren’t also concerned with murders, homelessness, abuse, etc.? Then why bring it up? It’s a strawman argument, a non-sequitur devised specifically to make it seem like you have the upper hand in this argument when anyone with any sense would be able to see right through it.

Lastly, “fan” hasn’t been short for “fanatic” in at least a century. Just because the word is derived from “fanatic” doesn’t give anyone the right to act like an asshole to people, famous or not.

Your argument is bad, your reasoning is bad, your defense of harassment is bad.

Comparing public proposals to rape is absurd. You're wholly entitled to your opinion on public proposals but comparing them to rape and rape culture shows you do not know what you are talking about and trivializes rape. You don't know these people. They could've been discussing getting married beforehand. Maybe they were privately engaged and wanted to play it up on TV for votes. Maybe it was a total surprise. It honestly doesn't matter because none of the mentioned scenarios would validate you equating public proposals with rape and you should be ashamed of yourself for even doing so. This could've been worded so much better. If public proposals make you uncomfortable and you think they're stupid and gross, then say that but do not minimize something that is already so minimized in the first place.
