But I really appreciate how, in an era where every villain has to have this complex tragic backstory that’s often poorly written and has the audience siding with abusers, Infinity Train said, “Here’s a character with a tragic backstory that does not excuse his abusive actions, he had a chance to redeem himself but he continued to hurt others, let’s kill him” and then in the same week, The Owl House went in the opposite direction and said, “Here’s a character who did something awful, not because of a tragic backstory, she just made an impulsive petty move without thinking of the consequences, it happens, let’s hope she acts better.”

What amazing choices. What amazing writing.

Writing advice from my uni teachers:

If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.

Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.

Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.

Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.

WHO STARTS OUT ADMIRING THE LENGTHS SHE WENT TO FOR REVENGE, WHO FINDS SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE PAIN SHE’S GOING THROUGH, OF LOSING A SISTER (AND A YOUNGER SISTER, AT THAT) AND ROCOCOA!!!! WOULD SHE TRY AND DISSUADE JET? OR WOULD SHE JUST ASK HER, WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO LOSE? JET WHO MAYBE EVEN DOESN’T TAKE THAT STEP UNTIL THE CATHEDRAL FIGHT BECAUSE HER AUNT’S RAISED SOME GOOD POINTS AND SHE’S STILL HURTING BUT ROCOCOA UNDERSTANDS AND SHE CAN SEE WITH HER OWN EYES WHAT GOING TO EXTREME LENGTHS OF REVENGE WILL DO, SO EVEN THROUGH THE PAIN AND RAGE SHE THINKS CAREFULLY BUT THEN THE CATHEDRAL FIGHT HAPPENS AND I JUST THINK MAYBE JET TAKING OATH OF VENGEANCE PALADIN LEVELS SPECIFICALLY IN THE MOMENT SHE SCREAMS “IF IT’S A WAR YOU WANT IT’S A WAR YOU’LL GET” AT THE PONTIFEX WOULD BE NEAT.
