Lilo & Stitch 2025 did a racism (and ruined a great message about family)
So... Lilo & Stitch... the classic, wholesome movie about two sisters (two NATIVE sisters) struggling with grief after their parents tragic death, with the central conflict being the older sister's despair to step up as a mom not just because it's now her responsibility but because ALL THESE TWO HAVE LEFT IS EACH OTHER and being separated would make this already tragic situation EVEN MORE TRAUMATIZING for the both of them...
...That movie got a remake. In which the happy ending is the US government taking the little sis away because "it's too much responsibility for this young woman" and she can TOTALLY trust the system to take care of her family better than she ever could, and it's not like OHANA, or NO ONE GETS LEFT BEHIND OR FORGOTTEN is the heart of the story or anything. That's totally a much better message her meeting more people that become like family and help her take care of Lilo. "Just give up" is much better than "Have faith, accept help, and above all KEEP FIGHTING"
Oh, and would you look at that, the original movie has a super sad scene in which Nani is saying goodbye to Lilo the night before she's meant to be taken away against their wishes and trying to make sure she knows that she never wanted this and will always love her by singing Aloha Oe - the song written by the last queen of Hawaii, who was expressing her grief after the US government made Hawaii a state. And this same queen is mentioned by name in the song that Lilo is seen dancing to at the start of the original. Almost like this message was also important.
And Disney decided, in 2025, in the middle of a bunch of controversy and scandals about mass deportations, including of people that were in the country 100% legally, to change the ending of the movie so that it is a GOOD thing that the US government is taking this native little girl away from her family because "she can't take care of you like we can", which is a recurring problem for indigenous comminities. And they thought that'd go over well.
*deep sigh*
...BOY
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
IS WRONG THESE DUMBASSES?
I'm so fucking tired.
