"Can I help you?"
Don’t stray far.Give me just a few moments and we’ll be on our way. Then we can go and introduce you properly.
Oh, but she didn’t wait. Maybe she should have. But she didn’t. Gripping two boxes of chocolate frogs so tightly in her hand (don’t worry, there was nothing in them though to the naked eye? it might be hard to tell) that the boxes were crumpled and wrinkled. Her freckled, pale skin bleeding out the color to ivory in her knuckles and tendons. Veins puffed out from the adrenaline rushing through her veins. A natural, unpreventable reaction she hadn’t quite predicted would hit her so hard when she strayed far and forgot to wait a few moments.
Around her, children gasped and cheered at the vast array of candy and toys. Gadgets and games she had no real idea of how they worked. Most like the rest of the world the young woman had walked into at her mother’s side. She was old enough to be in her fourth year from the school she knew they all attended. Yet never set foot inside it. It was why they were here. To work things out. A decision her mother didn’t take lightly but there was something going on she was told she wouldn’t understand. But promised she’d be made to at the end of this. What kept her up at night? Was the promise that there was someone here she would meet. Someone who was ingrained in her DNA. Blood to blood. Bone to bone. Soul sliver to soul sliver.
And he was right there. Close enough to touch. Waiting for her to answer a simple question.
If only it were that simple to do. Open her mouth and say something. Anything. Other than the silence and the echo of cardboard crunching even worse in her palms. His face was inside the container. Laughing and waving like an idiot who just won the world. The same stupid laugh she had when she truly lost it. Not the one that was so much like her mothers when she was holding in and letting out silent chuckles and rolls of her eyes. He had to be her age then. Judging by the picture that moved and took her breath away the second she saw it happen for the first time. All around her was a world she was clueless about. And her key to it? The top part? She was outside talking to a woman she didn’t know.
The second half? She couldn’t even make something up. Her lips wobbled, some sort of noise came out and all he wanted to know was how he could help her. Tears welled up in her eyes and in spite of all the want to propel herself forward and wrap her arms around him and never let go? She did the opposite. About facing and darting out of the store so fast that she forgot what was in her other hand. Her lie. Her reason for approaching the counter. A Fred Weasley’s Basic Blaze box because they were the first thing she saw that didn’t have a flock of blushing, high voiced girls fawning over the products of like the obnoxiously pink display she skirted around to get there. Speaking of skirting around? Out the door she went! Shoplifter Maddie, tongue tied and clueless as the door bounced off it’s hinges in her wake.

( mssg » maddie | sent ) I hope so, sweetheart. There’s so much out there I want to show you. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) If I had my way, we’d be gone for months. A proper trip around the world to see everything there is to offer. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) There’s too much conflict going on out there right now, it’s not safe. Especially not for us to be traveling alone, but one day, I’d love nothing more. We just have to keep hoping for a better tomorrow. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) A Bulgarian sort of football; you know how the are. Always have to have their take on it, but Uncle Viktor is very good. One of the best players in the world, I’d say. His matches are always just so far away. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) Try not to think of it like that. We’re safe, we have our home, our cats, your grandparents. We’re very lucky to be where we are, with everyone we love. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) I know it isn’t ideal, baby, but please trust me when I say it’s necessary. There are far too many bad people out in the world right now. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) Where is it you’d like to go?
( mssg » mom | sent ) I want you to show me all these things. All that you’ve seen. We can discover new places, too! ( mssg » mom | sent ) That sounds like heaven. Months of going out and learning the world. Can we? ( mssg » mom | sent ) Oh.. ( mssg » mom | sent ) What do you mean too much conflict? The world is a scary place sometimes but we can’t let what’s happening hold us back either. If we’re waiting for everything to be perfect? We’re never going to go anywhere. Sounds a lot like living in fear to me. I thought you said we should never do that? ( mssg » mom | sent ) I know. Everything is too far away.. ( mssg » mom | sent ) I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful. I’m not. You’ve worked hard my whole life to protect me and this whole family. I appreciate everything you’ve given me. ( mssg » mom | sent ) Sometimes my mind starts going places. I should know better. ( mssg » mom | sent ) Everywhere. London and Paris! Some tiny village on a tropical island where we can pick fruit off trees! Everywhere in between, too. ( mssg » mom | sent ) Then we’d go somewhere that I’m not sure where it is. I only know it’s out there. Somewhere. ( mssg » mom | sent ) I feel like there’s a place we need to see but I don’t know where it is. Or how to get there. Silly, I know. Do you expect less from me? I am your daughter, after all.

( mssg » maddie | sent ) He had to get a few in our last year, but we both spent our fair share of time in the hospital wing. The boys were always getting us into trouble. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) I was actually there more often than he was, if you’d believe it or not. He did break his leg in our third year too. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) To say in my seven years at school, that I should have had a heart attack; well, it wouldn’t be a stretch. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) It’s much different with you because you’re my daughter. I care infinitely more about your well being, whereas the boys would listen to me, ignore me, and then feel the wrath of their ignorance. Not that I didn’t care about them, of course, but you get what I mean. ( mssg » maddie | sent ) You can take full credit for this particular brand.
( mssg » mom | sent ) Hold on! You had to go to the hospital more than I did? Now you need to start explaining how that happened. Because you threw off every perception I had of how this works until now! ( mssg » mom | sent ) They survived the wrath more than once? ( mssg » mom | sent ) Why were they so thick that they got more than a single dose anyway? They must have been daft beyond measure. ( mssg » mom | sent ) At least my brand is a little original then? Should I be happy about that? Probably not. ( mssg » mom | sent ) Wow. My head hurts.

( mssg » mom | sent ) Do you think we’ll ever be able to leave here?( mssg » mom | sent ) Maybe just for a weekend? We could go visit Uncle Viktor and see one of his matches! What sort of sport does he play anyway? Is it football or?( mssg » mom | sent ) You have to feel as tied down to this town as I do.( mssg » mom | sent ) I guess that’s why I’m not sleeping much tonight. ( mssg » mom | sent ) I feel like my whole body has restless leg syndrome.

"I see you're just like your mother then." - Harry Potter | Horcrvxed.
She’d had enough.
Being here trapped and unable to leave. Scared. Alone. And in a world she knew nothing about that only showed her one mind twisting thing after another? Madeline was beyond petrified that whatever people, no they weren’t people..they were wizards (just like the movies, only stranger), weren’t going to let her go. No matter what she said, what she did. How much she plead or tried to get away? She couldn’t get out of the room he had her locked in. This is where she’s been since he came to take her away from the ones who stole her..
She wanted out. But out was an impossible dream. Not a single window would budge.
At least it was better than the first couple of nights with them. Where she was called names that she had no idea what they meant. Half blood. Sickening. Disgusting. Abomination. When she snapped back at one of them, whatever they did to her made her scream until she felt like her throat might go raw. The pain was so engulfing that all she could do was beg and beg some more for them to stop. Relief only came when a tall, lanky man snapped the stick the other one was holding and threw it to the ground telling the witch she would face him later.
All the while she kept hearing them talk about him. He would be angry if they killed her. He would hear about this. He would make anyone who kept hurting her pay once he found out. They were crazy. Beyond crazy. The more she saw, the more she thought she was going crazy, too. Until he came. With his green eyes and wild hair. His voice weirdly soothing before she felt the world zap itself into a spinny dizziness that was swirling with colors and blurs and nothing felt real as everything untangled, fell apart and then she blacked out.
Waking up in this room? She ran to the window as fast as she could, beating it with her fists until she had to stop or crush her own bones. When that didn’t work, a candlestick nearly broke in half from how hard she hit it. Was this about what she did? Whatever that was was an accident! She said it over and over to the others. It was an accident and not even possible! But they wouldn’t believe her. Setting a book on fire by staring at it just wasn’t real in her world. Not until she made it that way.
Madeline heard his voice when she grabbed a heavy piece of stone sitting on the dresser to use next. That window was going to break. Not knowing it was for scrying but not really caring either. She spun around realizing this whole time she’d been cursing them, cursing this world, cursing them for hurting her, cursing books, and cursing him for locking her up and not taking her home. And he’d been here to hear the whole thing.
‘I see you’re just like your mother then.’
“So?! What?! What is that supposed to mean? If you think that’s an insult? It’s not! Now, I see what she must’ve been so desperate to keep me from. All of you are completely bonkers. Out of your mind and if I stay here? I’m going to go just as mad. I’m going home.” The rock hit the dresser hard as she slammed it down and bowed her head staring at it instead of turning around. He wasn’t allowed to see how the color drained out of her face. How wide her eyes were in fear after she heard herself snap back at one of them. Apparently the one of them. A slow exhale and she steadied herself on her feet waiting for what trouble her mouth might’ve just gotten her into. But an apology was far, far from her lips.
“You can’t just go wandering off like that.”
The edge of town seemed to have a magical barrier around it cutting it off from whatever else there was beyond their tiny village. Every time she got close enough that she thought a toe might step over the last bit of sidewalk before the road took over? Her mother was there, clutching her elbow and pulling her back to her awaiting arms. Or the car as it were in this case. She went because she knew that putting up an argument was going to only end in both of them being frustrated with one another. Worse. Because right now? The frustration levels were pretty high anyway. Her mother bypassed mildly annoyed last night because this was the third time in a week that she almost ventured where she was told she should never go. Her? For the same reasons. Only more.
If she didn’t get out of this town for a change of scenery soon? She was going to go crazy.
Every day was the same. Wake up. Go to town. See the same faces. Hear the same stories. Wear the pages down of a book she’s read before. Feign surprise when Henri at the grocer gives her a wink and then goes red from head to toe. Every day on a routine. The sun slipped past the same horizon. She watched it go to places she knew were out there. Beyond her line of sight into the unknown. If her mother had anything to say about it? Unknown is what the rest of the world would be forever. She knew it. Said it in her most heated moments. Tonight? She didn’t. Because she already knew she was in trouble.
Most people her age were going off to school. She was on her way home to hear the words she knew would be waiting for her after the silent car ride. ‘You can’t just go wandering off like that.’ Amber eyes stared at the window as she sat down on a kitchen chair and stretched her legs underneath the table. Her elbow bent against the polished wood and she stuck her thumb between her lips, chewing on her nail as she chose her next words carefully.
“Why not? What is so wrong with what’s past this place that I can’t do anything on my own? Do you think I’m going to get zapped by some invisible barrier that’s keeping us all hostage here? I’m not going to leave forever.” She lowered her thumb and dug at the woodgrain instead. “I only want to see what’s out there. All these stories. Books. Movies.. And I’m not supposed to be even mildly curious as to what the world looks like past..this?”
“It’s not like I have anyone to get in trouble with.” Because she didn’t. Have anyone. Other than her mother, her grandparents and Uncle Viktor who came and went too sparsely in her opinion. She never got close to anyone. “I’m not going to run off and join the circus. Or start following a band and doing drugs.” Her thumb wavered and she pressed her palm flat, narrowing her eyes towards pale pink fingernails painted by her mother on their last girls night in. “Why don’t you trust me?” Her voice was curious, hesitant, but once she put the question out there? There was no taking it back.
