Just a heads up: Brazil has put in effect a law that was approved by congress in september that severely limits my ability to use the web due to ID verification practices. Since I do not consent to giving my documents to any social media site, if I'm required to do so here, I'll stop posting in here as well as every other site that requires me to make an ID
I wholly disagree with this law that, among other things, would require users to hand their ID documents or facial ID in order to verify if they're of age to access certain sites.
While still democratic, Brazil is an extremely politically repressive society, I went to enough protests to see that it's not hard for the militarized police force to use extreme violence in dissuading pacific protests. Often, this violence culminates in actual assassinations, such as in the case of Marielle Franco and Marçal Tupã'i.
Last year, my state was found guilty of conducting illegal spionage work in order to monitor indigenous political activists who were protesting over a new law that had passed state-wide. With ID verification, these cases of political violence would become so much worse, since they could potentially give a detailed report of every citizen's web activity, coupled with things like the time and place in which they were required to hand their ID's to sites.
With all that in mind, I have decided that I will stop using each and every site that requires me to hand them my ID or scan my face in order to verify if I'm old enough to use the fucking internet. I cannot trust Tumblr or any other site with my ID, and I can't trust the government with my web activity, as all it would take is a fash president to outlaw being gay or trans for my existence to suddenly become criminal.
So yeah, if things really get bad and I can't post here anymore, I'm really sorry but I just don't want to give tumblr my ID. It fucking sucks and I'm so upset and embarassed of my country because of it. I will try to organize myself when possible to express my disatisfaction with this extremely repressive law.
Many of you either already live in countries that have implemented similar laws, or are at risk of having such laws implemented in your country. Regardless, I recommend you're as vocal as possible in how terrible these laws are and how they're anathema to the principle of privacy, always so necessary for the maintenance of a democratic society. Be very vocal, sympathize with people who already have to deal with these bullshit laws. Refute every point raised by those swept by the irrational moral panic that fuels these sudden descents into authoritarianism. Your capacity to think and properly act upon these circumstances are paramount for this situation to get rectified.
