Fall Tour 2014: Hollywood
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON OCT 13TH
After a about five hours of sleep, my crazy ass got up early to check out the hotel’s gym haha. I’ve always wanted to hit up an actual gym on tour, but never got the chance, so I’m glad I sacrificed some sleep. The equipment was kinda haggard though which made it difficult. I made it down to the hotel room feelin swoll as fuq and creeped in while everyone was still sleeping. Checkout was at 11am and people started stirring around 10:30 haha. I got a quick shower and packed my bags while Nolan and baby girl had marital arguments. Only married a few hours and already bickering… We checked out of the hotel and drove over to a place called blue skillet for breakfast. It was our last meal with our friends unholy monarch and singularity. We said our goodbyes and thank yous after we ate, and J-fuck gifted us with a butt plug as a parting gift. Haha I’m gonna miss these dudes…
I caught up on some sleep on the way to Hollywood, but I felt pretty carsick most of the way. Probably because I watched a nightmare on elm street on my DVD player haha. About half way through the drive, I switched spots with Sam at a gas station, and drove the rest of the way toward Hollywood. Bad traffic though….. We pulled into a parking lot and sat in the van for a while until we went to lurk down the streets a bit. We walked across the star walk, saw the Capitol records building, and the Hollywood hills sign was barely visible as the sun was setting. When we got back to the venue, this chick tricked me into showing her my ID. I tried walking in and she stopped me. I thought she was an employee, but she was just some random person hanging out haha. We chilled on the patio watching crazy homeless people, grabbed some delicious Popeyes next door, and started to chill with people as more and more came into the venue. We were sharing gear with brain dead tonight, and I was on the house kit. So the show was fun, just a little hard. I had a few stick drops, nolan broke a string, and Sam came unplugged. But what can you do. We rocked as hard as we could and had a good time, and a dude still came and told me it was the best show he’s ever seen.
After the show, I did some gangster ass driving and got the van backed up into an alley in the back of the venue. We packed up real quick and went back inside to catch brain dead. Tonight was actually a great turnout! Thanks Lara Gladstone for setting us up with a show! And thanks to everyone that came out to the show. We left around 1am, and I had to be up at 3:30 to catch my flight at 6:30 haha. So Sam drove us to chino hills to stay with friends and catch up with unholy and singularity while I tried to cram some sleep in the back bed. Next thing I knew, I was up again, getting dressed, and driving another hour to LAX. Sam dropped me off at the terminal, and i said bye to my bros. Now here I am at 30,000 feet, writing this blog, sippin on cranberry juice, heading back to AZ to catch a flight to Orlando at 2pm! Vacation ain’t over yet! I’d like to thank Mike Thomas of unholy monarch for letting me share his kit with him, and the rest of unholy for letting warhead use their cabs. Also, thanks to everyone that fed, housed, and supported us on this tour, and even the ones that got me fucked up the other night haha. Thank you and fuck you ;) And I'd like to give props to David Rodriguez for stepping up and filling in on guitar for us! You killed it man! Fall Tour 2014: Las Vegas
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON OCT 12TH
Woke up in the van this morning with the rest of warhead sleeping next to me haha. It was pretty toasty up in there. I cracked the door open to let some breeze in, and stepped outside as mike and Zakk were just waking up. We started getting ready for the day, and we had a some delicious breakfast burritos! We had a bit before we were leaving for Vegas, so I took the opportunity to get a quick pump, and hang out with J-fuck, Sam, and Adam. All these people together call for serious laughs, and it was hilarious just talking shit and messing around while I got my workout in. I even made an instructional video about tour gains, and Nolan gave me the gayest spot ever. The best part was a car drove by right when we were doing it haha. We packed all of our things, and it was time to say bye to Dalton and his family, and head for Vegas. Thank you guys for housing and feeding us! We appreciate it!
The drive to Vegas was super windy, but we got there in a short amount of time. We passed the Hoover god dam, but I couldn’t see it :( When we rolled into Vegas, things were pretty stressful because everybody just scattered and we had no idea what was happening. Half of us were trying to figure out where to get a hotel for the night while the other half were gambling already. We finally figured it out, and made it to our hotel, the riviera, and got settled in. We had some time to kill, so Nolan and I went down to play some slots! I did pretty good actually! I kept winning free games. A few hours passed, I got some dinner, and headed down to the van to go to the show. The Cheyenne salloon was pretty sweet! Our first actual venue this tour haha. We got everything loaded in to a super tight corner of the venue, and hung out at the bar, played some air hockey, and relaxed. Warhead was on first for our package tonight, and I decided to try out triggers tonight. I’ve played them before, but never live, so I was curious to see how they’d sound. It felt pretty weird because the batter head of the kick drum was so tight, and I’m used to a lot of rebound. But it sounded great, and we played a really tight set! Every band played great tonight, and it’s a shame that it all has to come to an end tomorrow, but we’ve really enjoyed this tour together! After the show, we loaded all the bullshit ass gear into the trailer, and I made sure I had all my personal gear since we’re parting ways with unholy monarch and singularity tomorrow. It was after midnight when we left the venue, and went back to the hotel to RAGE.
THANK GOD. I didn’t get turnt up tonight. Just like I said haha. Sorry Paul. I win. But I played roulette and slots with mike and Nolan and I was actually up for a while! My favorite game was the village people slots! I kept winning the village people party and winning bonus points! But then I started to suck and lose all my money haha. But I had a good time, and I called it a night around 3am. The rest of the guys partied pretty hard as far as I know, crawling back to the hotel room around 7am haha. Lots of marriages took place. Nolan and baby girl got married, And Zakk and sam almost got married, but Zakk realized that sam was a financial obligation and called it off, leaving Sam heartbroken. Las Vegas was killer. We’ve had a blast. Warhead plays in Hollywood next, and unholy and singularity play in Anaheim. Last show of the tour coming up!
Fall tour 2014: Kingman, AZ
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON OCT 11TH
Woke up this morning still kinda spinning, but I didn’t feel as nauseous anymore. I woke up inside a beautiful cabin, with the sun shining through 3 huge windows on near the ceiling, exposing a view of the hillside. I crawled out of my sleeping bag as matty from unholy and David were waking up. They asked how I was feeling, but I was more worried about matty, because he slept in an upright easy chair all night that we later found out could recline! Haha. One by one people, people started creeping out of their rooms and hanging out in the living room. It was nice just talking and hanging out, and the cabin’s homeowner made us a delicious breakfast! I felt way better after food and medicine, and it seemed the worst was behind me. Paul is still determined to get me shit faced, but it’s not happening haha. Everyone got clean up a bit, and around 1pm we were packed up and ready to head toward kingman. To the people that let us stay at your cabin, thank you so much!
We made a grocery stop at walmart, and as we were waiting outside the store for everyone to come out, we almost witnessed an old people fight! This old lady was driving and stopped in the crosswalk for no reason. The guys behind her was not havin it, and he started honking. He honked 2 or 3 more times before he rolled down his window and was like “you’re holding up traffic!” The lady responded by opening her door all the way, leaning out and yelled, “shut up!” It was pretty hilarious to watch them go at it. I hope they ran into each other in the prunes aisle and got a chance to duke it out for real! After walmart we went to lynx lake to hang out for a bit, and that was a lot of fun! The weather was so nice, and we skipped rocks and enjoyed the view. This is a really fun tour package. Everyone gets along really well and we have a good time! After an hour or so, if was finally time to start heading toward kingman.
After a long drive, a nice nap, and a meal, we pulled into the fraternal order of the eagles, which is like a veterans community center. We were playing in what looked like the multipurpose room haha, and we started unloading all of our gear into a corner of the room. The lights turned down, and people started filling in! Mike baby girl, Nate from singularity and i had our practice stations set up outside the venue, and had a little warmup session talked drums for a bit. Both are super cool dudes, and insanely talented drummers. I went inside to watch unholy monarch play, and the energy was CRAZY. The crowd was going fucking apeshit and were totally digging the music. Outside the building, I was hanging by my drums again and i met this man, Gary. One of the nicest people I’ve ever met. We talked for a bit and he shared some pretty deep personal stuff, but it was nice talking to him and eventually it was time to warm up and get ready for the show. We started setting up on stage, and got the crowd to come closer and rage with us. The show was fun tonight. Crowd was digging it, but it was one of the sketchiest shows we’ve played in while. We were not locking in and it was almost falling apart until we finally got it together, but it was really hard to hear. After the show, we tore down and mingled with some of the fans, and signed a few shirts. One little kid was repping a warhead shirt, and was running around the venue having a blast haha. I saw Gary again afterwards, and he just gave me a huge hug haha. I know it sounds weird, but I truly enjoy when people are so moved by what we do. Right as the last band was playing, this dude started raging in the pit too hard, and apparently made some nazi signs, and got kicked the fuck out haha. Only problem was he wouldn’t leave. I went outside and he was fighting with one if the employees about being kicked out. Eventually there like 8 people surrounding this guys telling him to leave. Everyone was trying to brawl, but Nolan stepped in and was just telling to the dude to calmly go home. After a ton of talking, he finally left haha. We packed up the trailer, and headed to Dalton’s from oppressor god, and they had pizza and brownies waiting for us! We hung out for a bit, and I was so tired that I went to crash in the van. Today was a good day, and we play Las Vegas next! Get ready!!
Fall tour 2014: Prescott
THIS SHOW HAPPENED OCTOBER 10th, MY BIRTHDAY! What's up guys?! Tour blogs are back for this weekend fall tour, and it kicked off on my birthday! I met everyone at the pad, and started loading the trailer and packing the van. We're on the road with our friends in singularity, and our girlfriends in unholy monarch. We hit the road around 4:30 and made our way towards Prescott. When we got there, we scoped out the venue, and discovered the tiniest stage we've ever seen. We were waiting for unholy to show up, so we walked around in the cool wind chill and got some chipotle for dinner. We found out we were opening the show, so we hurried back to the venue and started our set up. Special thanks to my drum tech, mike aka baby girl for helping me set up the drums! We got everything dialed in, and we crammed everything onto the stage. I was facing the wall at angle with a wall of cabs sitting in front of me, and the guitar players stood in front of the cabs and behind a short rail right in front of them. Needless to say things were really tight haha. But regardless, the show was awesome! I was going hard, and felt really solid throughout the set. Sam's dad came to the show, and kept handing me jack and cokes between songs haha. We finished up the set, made a few adjustments on mike's kit, and then it was time for birthday drinks...................... This is where things started to turn. Haha. It began with a jack and coke, and then another, and then another, and I called it quits and rode that for a while. I watched unholy play and hung out at the bar for an hour or so, and then Tori gave me a shot of jäger. If I had stopped there, I would've been fine. But nope. Paul from unholy monarch finished his set, and demanded i do a shot with him. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. I went immediately to the nausea phase, and started tripping out. That was the straw that broke the camel's back haha. I stumbled to the bathroom while all the guys made fun of me, and I let loose in there. I hate vomiting, but it felt so good haha. I was in there for a good while, still spinning like crazy. I mustered up enough strength to get back to the van, and crawled in the back while we drove to someone's cabin for the night. I must have passed out for an hour or so, because I woke up alone in the van at 2:30am feeling like I was pressed against the back door and all the blood was rushing to my head. Turns out we were parked on a 75* incline outside a cabin. I vaguely recall the events that happened from the van to the living room floor, but I remember saying "fuck the world," and "get me off this hill..." Laying flat seemed to help, and i slowly dozed off. God damn... I don't want alcohol for a LONG TIME. Everyone has to go through that once I suppose, and I learned my lesson haha. We play in kingman next, and hopefully I'll recover in time for the show!

East coast 2014: Albuquerque
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON MAY 26TH What a day?! Started it off with a killer breakfast at Waffle House right outside our hotel. We had about 4 hours to Albuquerque, so we got all packed up after breakfast and hit the road. I drove a good chunk of the drive, but I think I'm burnt out on driving, so I switched with Sam. It was the first time that i sat in the passenger seat the whole tour Haha. We pulled into the venue in Albuquerque, and there were already a lot of people there! It was another festival style show, with bands playing all day, and we were set to play later in the night. We scoped everything out for a while, watched a few bands, and reconnected with some old friends we made the last time we were here. There was a sonic down the road, so that's where we had our lunch, And we had a great server who was shredding on his skates! We also got approached by a lot of homeless people though, many of them "vets," who probably saw an opportunity to score this Memorial Day. After lunch we just hung out most of the day, shooting the shit and relaxing. We started getting to work around 8, getting all of our gear ready to load in. Nolan found one of my broken sticks, and asked me if he could throw it. I should never have allowed this, but I thought what the hell go for it. Well this numb nut throws the stick right at my tom and puts a big dent in the head... I just looked at him and said, really?? I have all this on film by the way. Luckily the head was old and it already had a little split in it, but I knew something like that was going to happen haha. But he was very apologetic, and it could have been worse I suppose! Anyways, we got all our stuff into a tiny room outside the stage and i started warming up for the last show! The show tonight was incredible, but we had some pretty big technical problems that waited till the last night of tour to happen. Right out of the gate, my snare head breaks... I haven't broken a head in at least a year, so I wasn't expecting it. Luckily it cracked on the side, so I was still able to get some tone out of it, but it was definitely weaker, and I had so much more to play, including a drum solo. But still I just kept going as hard as I could as always, and it worked out fine, until my china fell off the stage, hitting Cody's amp, and triggering it off. This happened right in the middle of bent on destruction, and to kill the awkward silence, ANOTHER drum solo was in order. So I played as much as I could while Nolan and Cody were trying to fix the problem. I played some tasty shit at first, but no one seemed to dig that haha, so I went a little crazy with double bass and that always gets people excited haha. But I was running out of ideas and they still hadn't fixed it.. So I went into "hot for teacher" and they got it fixed finally! After that, the set went pretty normal, it was just the stress of making it through in one piece that lingered. But our crowd was killer tonight! I was looking forward to this show. I knew we'd have a great response here, just like the last time! Last notes of the show, and then we were outside mingling with fans and talking about the craziness of our set. It was great talking to older fans who liked the show so much more than the first time, and meeting new fans that saw us for the first time tonight! This tour has been absolutely incredible, and warhead is so thankful for all the experiences that we've had on this 5 week trek of the country. 5 weeks. That's a big notch on our belt, and It's only gonna get better from here. It's very bittersweet to know that it's all over now....UNTIL THE NEXT TIME! Thank you Albuquerque for raging like you always do, and thanks to everyone that has supported us on our journey, with homes and food and merch and your energy at our shows. I'd also like to thank everyone that has kept up with my blog this whole time. I didn't expect to get this much positive response so thank you! This will be my last entry for a while, but we're planning to hit the road again in September, so I'll start the blog again on that tour! East coast 2014: Driving Day pt 2
THIS HAPPENED ON MAY 25TH We actually woke up this morning to a beautiful breeze, which made the van nice and cool when we opened the doors to squeeze in those last ounces of sleep. I went inside for breakfast at the weirdest walmart I've ever seen. It looked like the outlet mall in Mesa, for all you az readers.. We had a day off today, and we had about a 9.5 hour drive to Albuquerque, so we were coming up with different plans for what we wanted to do for the day. In the mean time, Nolan and sam got food at this taco place next door, and we lucked out because they brought us a whole other plate of tacos! It must have been a mistake, but after a big moral debate, we gave in and ate that shit. We all decided that we wanted to visit the grave site of dimebag darrell, so when we finished eating, we piled into the van and went to pay our respects. It was pretty easy to find. He's buried next to a beautiful lake in the cemetery, and he had a great headstone covered in dimes and guitar picks. It was a really peaceful and euphoric experience just looking at his resting place and hearing the silence. We all got good pictures, and we finally left as the rain was beginning to fall. It's still such a shame to know that dude is gone, but he made a huge impact on the music world, and I blasted some pantera on my iPod as we left the cemetery. The plan was to plug Albuquerque into the GPS and just drive as far as we could. We drove about 5 hours, through countless Podunk towns and highways. I will say the sky was beautiful in Texas today. Sun rays were shining through the rain clouds over the plains, which was a good view for the drive! We were about to piss ourselves, so we stopped at a pilot for food and bathrooms, and I thought Sam would take over driving and we'd drive more toward Albuquerque. But we found a sweet deal on a hotel in Amarillo! So here we are for the night, chilling at our last hotel of the tour, and getting ready to conquer Albuquerque tomorrow. Sorry this blog is a little more short and boring than usual, but not a whole lot happened today! But I'm stoked about the show tomorrow, and i know it'll be a blast, so we'll see you all tomorrow for the last show of the tour. Let's finish strong!
East coast 2014: Arlington, TX
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON MAY 24TH After we were all up and had eaten our McDonald's breakfast, we went shopping for one case of water. That's all. That's how men shop. We left the walmart around 12:30 so we could beat the traffic in Dallas. We were all pretty exhausted from the night before, and were running off few hours of sleep, so when we got to the venue, a place called The CD warehouse, I was ready to crash out. But for some reason I didn't, and I went inside to check it out. It was basically a full blown record store! I thought there might be a stage in the back or something, but nope, just move the records and play on the floor. Rock n roll. We were parked in a back lot behind the venue, so I had another excellent workout today, and actually did some cardio which made me feel better after so much junk food lately. I was hanging out with Cody afterwards and we were leaning against the wall, and I noticed his tattoos looked really chalky. Just as I was about to ask what's up, I noticed I was covered in this white dust too. The wall was caked in a bunch of dust, So I looked like an ashy motherfucker. We all got a kick out of that. The worst part was, it wouldn't come off until I found a bathroom to wash up, so I walked around looking like a crack dealer for a while. I went next door to potbelly sandwich shops for dinner, and took the time to get cleaned up. At this point, I couldn't fight the exhaustion anymore, so I laid down in the van for a while, but my rest was short lived, because I had to start setting up, and it was starting to sprinkle. To my horror, I found Rod Steinway (my practice pad) had been killed during the ride. Sam's stupid bag crushed him. He's a little shorter now, but he still works! It'll get me through Albuquerque. As we set up, Cody and I had a lamb of god session, and I got my warmup in the rain. We loaded in through the back of the store, carrying our gear through the aisles of CDs. There were a lot of people there surprisingly! We were all set up on the floor, and once I began the count off, shit got crazy! People were going nuts in this super tiny space. I watched a full can of four loco spill right next to our tuning pedal during pernicious attack, but I couldn't do anything about it! Luckily there was no damage. Nolan had to dodge the mic a few times as kids were bumping into everything! But the show was awesome! We had a killer time! Everyone was so cool afterwards too, and I got a lot of pictures with people! We were playing with out bros in Insinnerator tonight, so same soon as I packed up, I rushed back inside to catch the end of their set. Their show was crazy too. I remember Nolan taking a selfie with the guitarist Chris during the show, and kids bumping into the drum set, nearly knocking it over! To celebrate our string of shows in Texas, we all mobbed over to Denny's after the show! Now this was filled with quality hangs! We had such a good time talking and laughing and it's times like these where you don't want tour to end. But this will not be our last time in Texas, and we'll see all of these dudes again! We've had a great time tonight, so thanks to the dudes in Insinnerator, and everyone that played tonight for making it a rad show! After our meal, it was off to walmart for sleep...
East coast 2014: Houston,TX
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON MAY 23RD
Today ended up being such a good day! I woke up in the hotel bed around 9, showered, did my hair, and watched commando on TV while the guys were getting ready! Commando is an excellent piece of film.. We got all packed up, and went for the van as it was beginning to rain! We had a pretty quiet drive today on the way to Houston, and the rain eventually stopped. The venue was a place called mango’s cafe, and it looked like no one was there yet as we pulled up. We had a good lunch at subway down the street, and I came back to read a bit and work out. My book is finally getting good, so I’ll finish that quick! My workout was intense today man. I think the subway wasn’t sitting well or something, because everything seemed way harder. But I got through it, and was packing everything away when the promoter approached me and introduced himself. We hammered out all the details, and one by one people started showing up. It was nice kicking back with the other bands with some brew and letting off some steam. We made some new friends tonight in the band metalloyd! Good hangs all around. I also totally ghetto rigged my practice pad! “If you can’t duct it, fuck it!” Nolan drew on the tape and gave it a face, and named it rod, aka Steinway. Hopefully he lasts the rest of the tour!
It was finally time for our set, and we DOMINATED tonight!! And this was by far the best crowd we’ve had all tour! They were pitting during sound check haha! We all just went as hard as we could, and the crowd went even harder. So thank you all for getting down with us! I got a ton of feedback after the show. It’s crazy when I can barely get back to the stage to tear down because so many people are talking to me! But I love it. One guy, (who might have been on something, but was a good dude nonetheless) said how inspiring it was to see and that I gave off good vibrations. That’s a new one haha! But thank you!
The time after the show was full of seriously quality hangs.. I talked to so many people, and had a really great talk with this dude about drummers we both like. Nolan also met this crazy bastard who was looking to party and was probably tweaked out of his mind. It went on like this until about 2am, and everyone got the hell out of there. Cody fucked up royal though,and left both his guitars in the venue, and the owner locked up and left… So as we’re trying to figure out what to do, nolan and sam ran across the street to a dance club where the bartenders were to see if they had a key. And who happened to be there? The owner!! Talk about good luck. We got Cody’s bullshit guitars, and headed to a walmart for the night. Houston was CRUSHING. We all had such a good time and can’t wait to come back through! And thanks Michael warner for setting us up with a bad ass show!
East coast 2014: Day off in San Antonio
THIS HAPPENED ON MAY 22ND Today was.. Not a very good day. For me anyways. I got a decent nights sleep though, and Gary made us some really good fajitas for lunch! I ate and got cleaned up, and then did nothing. I hate when I get bored because I feel like I get needy and call home a lot or bug Alexandra, and it's also graduation day. All of my family is back in Arizona right now, and my brother is graduating, and I feel like I'm missing out. Yeah, I'm on tour and everything, and this is what I have to do, but I think it was harder today because we had nothing planned, and no show to play. So right out of the gate I'm in a bad mood today. We were going to the see the Alamo though, so I was kinda looking forward to that. But parking was a nightmare like it always is. It was either super expensive, or had no space, but we finally found a place, and we walked toward the Alamo. We sat around all day, so we got there right as it was closing, so we only had about 45 seconds inside the actual Alamo. But i got some pictures at least, and asked "where's the basement?" Like peewee Herman. I also had a delicious ice cream cone from Hagen daz. The weather was nice, so I looked at the different sites, and listened to a street band play across the road. We explored more of the area and found a "river" that you can walk along, which was pretty cool. I calmed down a bit, but was still feeling a little melancholy. When we were done looking around, we headed back to the van and started looking for a hotel for the night. We arrived at the Howard Johnson's, and we had a sweet room. We each have our own tv's haha, so Cody and I kicked back and watched Kevin hart for a bit before we went out for some dinner. We must have been near the hood at Wendy's, because there were sketchy drivers behind us turning off their lights as they turned corners.. I couldn't find my way back to the hotel because the one way roads kept us from getting back! I was getting frustrated, and I could see the hotel was soo close. I said screw it and turned the wrong way toward the hotel. Thankfully it worked out and no one came toward us on the road. We're now back at the hotel watching family guy, and we'll probably be off to bed soon. I think this is a classic case of end of tour blues. It's like now that there is an end in sight, time is just dragging.. And like I said before, I'm a little bummed about missing my family being in town. But I tell myself this all the time: greatness requires sacrifice. I knew times like this would be coming when I was dreaming about touring when I was younger. And graduation today got me thinking about how far I've come since then. When I graduated I had barely had any drumming experience, I didn't know anyone in the music scene, and I was on track to be a saxophone performer.. My life took a 180* turn out of the blue, but I've worked my ass off to get to where I am today, and I know the younger Dane would be proud of what I've done so far. It's crazy to think that 3 years from my graduation I would have toured almost all of the continental United States, and be the musician I am now. I still have so much more to do and work for, and I will do things that my future self will thank me for. It's time for me to go to bed. Congratulations to all my friends that graduated tonight, including my brother Eric! And shout out to all my family celebrating in AZ tonight. I love you guys and wish that I could be there!
East coast 2014: San Antonio, TX
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON MAY 21ST Today was one of the most boring days I've had on tour. We drove a long way last night, so we woke up at a walmart in Beaumont, Texas. Nolan and sam drove most of the night, and didn't get to bed till around 7. So we when the heat woke us up around 9 or 10, we weren't very happy.. We didn't have to be at the venue until 10:30pm, so we had a TON of time to kill. I walked down the street to chick fil a for breakfast and i missed it by one minute..so I got a chicken sandwich and some waffle fries.FOR FREE! Just kidding. I went back to walmart to change and get ready for the day, and then went back to the van and waited...I read a little bit, talked to my family, and played a game on my phone to pass the time, but it was hot, and we still had hours before we had to leave. Why didn't I hang out In walmart? I did for a while, but there was no subway or McDonald's in there, so there was no where to sit except in the entrance walkway next to a mean receipt checker. I couldn't help but laugh though when Nolan lost his shit and went on a rant about the heat and being tired. We all know now bad it sucks, but we couldn't help but just laugh at it. We were parked next to a nice green belt, so I had a good place to workout at least. The guys caught up on some much needed rest in the mean time. The shadows were getting long, and it was finally time to start heading for San Antonio! The drive was more boring than the day was, because we got caught in horrible Houston rush hour.. I don't know what's up with me lately. I'm just always in a bad mood and everything was bugging me. And then the next minute I'm fine, like I'm bipolar or something. We pulled up to the venue kinda late because of traffic, and I parked the van along the side walk. The place was cool though! The front room had a big arcade leading to a bar and a nice stage. I walked in as a band was playing with a drum machine. After we got checked in, I apologized for snapping earlier, and immediately started setting up. We were going on soon. Nolan and sam bought some tacos from a stand across the street, so that was our dinner. They were good, but the onions and guacamole screwed my stomach up. I didn't get much of a warm up tonight, so i rushed inside to get all my stuff onstage. The Sound was pretty good, but my kicks were SO LOUD. Not saying that's a bad thing, but I hope it didn't overpower the rest of my kit haha. The show was pretty good tonight. Definitely the sweatiness of the whole tour, but we had a great crowd reaction. Feeling good after the show, I talked to some cool people and got a lot of great compliments. One dude told me he follows the blog, another guy told me how "blown away" he was, and i talked to someone else about drums! It was great to hear such positive feedback, so thank you sincerely to all those that talked to me tonight! As I went to pack up my drums, I pulled my cases out of the trailer, and it caught my practice kick pad, AND I FUCKING BROKE IT. I was livid, and wanted to punch or kick something. It was seriously hard to hold it all in. I have more bad luck with those things... Maybe I can glue it back together, but it just made me so mad because i could have moved it so easily, and instead I screwed it up. I was in a better mood though when I started talking to this guy Gabriel about Spanish words! It started off simple, and then it turned into this crazy profane spanish converstation haha. I was laughing so hard! I have some ammo for when i go back to work and get shit.. Gabriel has also seen a lot of classic metal bands in their prime, so he told us all about that as well! We were going to stay at our friends house for the night, and it was an awesome house! It was covered in sick horror movie posters, and also had a lot of cute cats running around haha. There was a party going on out back, and I had some great conversations about horror movies! The soundtrack was a live album of iron maiden, and we hung out for another hour before we all crashed out. We have a day off tomorrow, so we might check out the Alamo and other cool stuff. Hard to believe we only have 3 shows left!
East coast 2014: New Orleans
THIS SHOW HAPPENED ON MAY 20TH
I got a somewhat decent sleep last night, and crossed the street to Waffle House with nolan for breakfast. I got some chocolate chip waffles. It was DELICIOUS. Nolan’s been having ear problems lately, so we went over to urgent care to get it checked out. We were there for a few hours, so we took the time to charge our stuff, grab some groceries, and wait. When nolan was finally released, we figured out what the issue was, and that we caught it in time before he suffered any hearing loss!! Whew! Can’t have that.
The drive to New Orleans had a crazy highway that went all the way across the water! You know what I’m talking about? I think you can see it at the end of the haunted mansion movie with Eddie Murphy. Got it? Good. Anyway that was sweet, and when we finally pulled into the city, we stopped at the house where they filmed American horror story coven! Aka the Buckner mansion. I was nerding out because I happen to love coven and New Orleans. I was surprised that it’s basically just a normal house, with an owner that doesn’t like people hanging around.. We walked up the street a ways to look for a bathroom, and piled into the car to check out the French quarter! We parked in a lot a few blocks from bourbon street, and the attendant wanted $20… Are you kidding me??? With no other choice, we bit the bullet and started walking around the area. One side of the road is a lot like New York City with tall buildings and theaters and such. When we got to bourbon street, that’s when it turned into what you’d think New Orleans looks like. Bars, jazz clubs, strip clubs, and restaurants galore. There was so much to look at! I bought what’s known as a hurricane from a bar, and it was delicious. We walked until we got to the Delphine lalaurie house, which was a notorious site where slaves were apparently tortured by the Madame in a secret attic upstairs. This is also featured in American horror story. It was pretty eerie to see where that all happened, and the set for the exterior of the mansion was just a few doors down! We had a marvelous dinner at a local shop. I had alligator!! It tastes like any other fried meat haha, but it was so tasty and I’d have it again! The guys got catfish and pulled pork, so this has been the most authentic food we’ve had so far. Feeling full and feeling the buzz of the hurricane, the gang and i made one last walk up bourbon street, and tried to visit the grave site of the voodoo queen marie laveau. But unfortunately it was closed.. A more interesting fact though is that all the graves here are above ground! The empty neighborhood of tombs was eerily quiet with no tourists as the sun was setting. I had been looking forward to this for a long time, so I was so happy that i got to do everything I wanted!
We got to the venue around 8. It was a place called siberia, which is apparently THE club around here. It was badass! It had a great stage and bar, a pool table, arcade games, and a big backstage area for our gear. The ONLY downside was that they allowed smoking inside…so I was suffocating. We got loaded in, and I immediately set everything up, So the only thing I had to do was warm up. Something changed for me when we got to the venue though. I don’t know if it was because I’m getting sick again or what, but I was feeling so nauseous, and I was in a really bad mood. We were on first tonight, but it was packed! Especially for a Tuesday night. Huge crowd, but hard to get them into it. Not a whole lot of energy tonight, but it rose a few times, and I know everyone dug it. I also played a drum solo tonight which was pretty cool. I talked to a few people afterwards, one of my favorites was a black dude who was shaking my hand and said “nothin but respect for you” and then asked if I wanted a blunt. I respectfully declined haha. I packed up my drums while a sweet jazz band was tearin it up at the venue next door, and I went back inside. I played this weird ninja game with the quarters in my pocket while death hammer from Norway was playing. Those guys are nuts! But they’re all cool dudes. The singer was my favorite. He just had this insane death stare as he screamed his vocals. I went to the back just to sit for a moment, and I ended up falling asleep on the bench for about 45 minutes. Guess that proves how tired I am. Gonna try to get some much needed sleep and shake this cold. Maybe I’ll sweat it out tonight. Nevertheless, New Orleans was well worth the wait, I saw and did so many new and cool things today, and we played a killer show. Thank you all for coming out and supporting us!
