i just, really really respect how dr3 has handled sakakura’s sexuality. 

japan is a place where homosexuality is often kept silent and only really comes up in stereotypes and comedy. yaoi just makes the subject worse as most yaoi has very unrealistic portrayals of gay relationships and exists more to fetishize gay people than to represent them. because of this, being gay in japan is automatically viewed as something sexual or inappropriate, and most lgbt characters in japanese media reveal their identity through dirty jokes more than real development. 

even danganronpa is guilty of this with some of its lgbt characters. while i love teruteru, i hated that every conversation you had with him was always comedically sexual. it didn’t take long to realize he was bi, but only because of how open he was with being sexual to everyone. 

in the first dr3 episode, sakakura wasn’t portrayed in anyway like that. he didn’t awkwardly flirt with anyone or make any innuendos, there wasn’t anything there yet to analyze what his sexuality was, just like all the other characters. and when there were hints to his sexuality in later episodes, they weren’t sexual or played for comedy, they were based in his loyalty and trust in munakata just like any real close relationship. he was reserved and quiet about his feelings, keeping them to himself trying to deal with his emotions, like what an actual person with a secret crush would do, not flaunt it stereotypically to the world so the viewing audience can get a quick laugh out of it. 

characters like sakakura are such a rare gem in anime and manga. he’s a gay character from japanese media but his feelings and actions and the way his sexual orientation is revealed all feel real. it’s real and relatable and much of what he was experiencing in terms of his sexuality i could actually empathize with and understand as a queer person. 

it’s just really refreshing to experience that in an anime. a character that just happens to be lgbt not for a punchline or comic relief or yaoi but for character. i’m really proud of the dr writers because it seems they’ve really taken the time to better understand and apply that kind of representation to sakakura.
