Madness is not merely punishment; it is the god’s gift to those who follow him, offering the loss of the burdensome sense of self.
Classical Myth by Barry Powell, referring to Dionysus, god of wine and revelry, life and death (via ohnefalle)
Reminder - Mumford and Sons
Paparazzi in New York are much less fanatical than one might imagine. But yes, I’m glad its over. I quite like living like a normal twenty-something.
So I have heard. I'm not meaning to cause any offence, but I've never seen the glamour of being in the media's eye. It's...all so messy.
Happy Fucking New Year!
Well…all i know is that we were having fun. Then this text just took our attention away. Next thing I know Zach has me by my collar. I slept with his girlfriend who is my Hillary’s bestfriend and Preston’s secretary…It was just all a mess.
Alison? I don’t recall meeting her. Is she nice?
I-I was just wondering because you said it was full, but it was practically empty when I got down...a-and because of the mess. I'm sorry again...but if it helps, in my experience, messes can fix them self. I-it's just...hard. Remember I'm here to help however I can, yes?
I-I don't think you have, actually. Uh, yes, she's...very nice.
Maybe Just a Half a Drink More || Alison & Daniel
Your enthusiasm is refreshing.
Refreshing. Not annoying, not overwhelming, refreshing. It was like a weight was lifted off her shoulders. Not a lot of people enjoyed her passionate tendencies. Some would think she was foolish, childish, or just out right strange. Daniel thought it was refreshing. “Thank you,” she grinned. If he was alright with the most essential part of her personality, then it was clear that they’d get a long just fine.
Ali didn’t want to jump to any conclusions, that wasn’t why she asked. It was an innocent question, but the way he’d reacted,it helped her draw a picture as to why he didn’t drink anymore. Alcohol probably brought out sides of him that he wasn’t too fond of. He probably wasn’t a happy drunk like Ali was— the opposite in fact.
She recalled her stepfather coming home late after one too may drinks at the bar with his pals, how he’d immediately start with his bitter words and unreasonable rages, and she tried her best not to picture Daniel being like that. She didn’t want to think of him in that way, but even if that was who he was, he was different now and that’s all that mattered. He saw that it was problem and he was fixing it, and that was enough to convince her that he wasn’t anything like her stepfather.
Ali inspected the drawing, a bit proud of her work considering she was pressed for time, not to mention the fact that he was working and it wasn’t as if he were standing still like an ideal model should’ve been. The only time she came out with half decent drawings of things that moved, was when she drew it from memory, as was Daniel’s case. She’d only talked to him a for a short amount of time, but for some reason it was easy to recall certain facial features when she didn’t have a good angle and she figured it was because… well he just had one of those faces— not that she knew what “one of those faces” was. His familiarity was hardly anything Ali worried too much about, because logically speaking, she knew there was no way she could’ve known him before. There was only one Daniel she’d ever met before, and that was Hannah’s ex boyfriend in high school.
The buzzer snapped her out of her focus, and she had to take a second to process his question. “Oh, yeah. Yeah I’ll just come with you then,” she smiled, carefully setting the drawing back down and getting up from her seat. She didn’t like staying alone, it was just one of those weird things about her, so if she could avoid it she would. Ali followed him to the kitchen, deciding to take her glass with her since, from there, they’d probably go straight to the table. “Let’s see what you got cooking there Bobby Flay.” She took in a deep breath, her eyes rolling back as she savored the delicious scent of food with a pleased sigh. “So glad I didn’t eat anything before coming here. Ugh, don’t be grossed out if I eat every last bit of your food, okay? I promise, if this were a date, I would’ve been more lady like.”
His eyes flickered to the drawing as she placed it back on the table, relieved that it was no longer the topic of conversation. Making a note to tuck it away as soon as he could, he led the way to the kitchen-dining room area - the open space between the two areas made them practically the same room, but that was the way it had always been. The only way to tell them apart was by the lino and carpet. He quickly turned off the buzzer then gestured towards one of the seat, inviting her to take a seat if she wanted to.
"It's...spaghetti bolognaise," he replied, lifting the lid of the simmering meatballs and stirring them gently. "Nothing fancy, but I, uh, can't cook anything else for the life of me." He smirked slightly as he drained the pasta and separated it onto the two plates, the poured some sauce and meatballs on top of each. Biting his tongue, he carefully sprinkled some cheese on top - it was nothing fancy like parmesan or whatever other kind you were supposed to put on top of this dish, just plain, regular cheese, but it always made the difference.
He chuckled slightly and beckoned to his fridge and near empty cupboards. "Help yourself, although I can't promise you'll find anything interesting." He opened the oven to get out the garlic bread, flushing as she mentioned that dreaded word again. He could only be glad the heat blasting out at him covered up his embarrassment. After putting the bread onto a dish, he brought each of the plates over, placing the bread in the middle and the pasta in their rightful place. "Uh, would you like some more wine?" he offered, glancing around to see if he had forgotten anything.
It was worse when I was younger. Then I went to college, and sort of fell out of the spotlight. Now I’m mostly on the sidelines.
I suppose that things are much better now, then... I honestly can't imagine living like that. It's good that you are, uh...that you got through it.
[Biting at her lip she tried to swallow the lump in her throat. Her eyes slowly checked out the chair with a lost look on her face] Alright [She finally managed to sit down almost teetering as she did so] I didn’t realize—
[Rosie gave him a grateful smile. Honestly it was good to talk to someone who really didn’t know her well. Talking to strangers had become easy for the girl] I’m sorry for burdening you; honestly, I really didn’t know you were bartender. Also, I’m sure you’ve heard this sob story before. But— it all started when I decided to elope. Absolutely, never ever, by all means— elope. Never ever, ever, ever consider it. Especially if you’ve only been with someone about four months…
[He shakes his head, frowning.] Don't worry, I didn't expect you to know.
[He returned her smile, listening carefully as she spoke. He'd heard many strange and wonderful stories from drunk customers who needed to rant, and of course some that aren't as happy. But this situation was different - it was completely one-on-one, there was no other customers to serve, no excuses that could be made if things got too awkward. Just because people who had had one too many were comfortable with opening up didn't necessarily mean he was comfortable with it.] I'll keep it in mind...and I'm sorry to hear that.
Happy Fucking New Year!
Well, your mother has always been a wise lady. I think half of the city wants this blogger sacked as much as I do, so hopefully the truth surfaces sooner than later. I sure hope so, buddy. -shakes head- I’m done talking. Let’s talk more about you.
So, who is she? The more you insist that it’s not a date, the more suspicious I get.
Me too. Uh, do you actually mind telling me what happened at the bar the other night? If you're comfortable talking about it, that is. I would like to know, and I'd rather hear it from you.
A-Ali...Alison, Alison Whitmore. It wasn't, she gave me a drawing for Christmas, and I thought I should give her something in return, given the amount of work that went into it.
Happy Fucking New Year!
Well, you know how people are, right or not rights they do as they please. I am trying my best to track it but everything is just clean. The person just works meticulously to cover his tracks. It is true. See my face? All swollen and cut? That’s from his fist and her palm. Punch and slap combo. -shakes his head- Nah. you listening is enough already.
Dinner? A woman?
...You make a good point, but my mother used to always say there's no point in hiding the truth, as it will always come to light eventually. And when this does... I'm sorry, Zachary - it may take time, but they'll forgive, I'm sure of it. Keep talking, if you find it's helping.
Yes and, uh...yes - but it wasn't a date, Zachary, it wasn't.
Oh no, I’d never avoid you. Not just because it’s rude, but also because you’re more interesting than you give yourself credit. And awfully nice too. So no more of that talk, okay?
Definitely. I never have to pay overdue fees nowadays. [She smiles at her own joke] She’s amazing. I never have to worry about what to read next because she’s already got five recommendations. I look forward to hearing yours too. If I can think of any or if Paige gives me any great suggestions, I’ll let you know.
Th-thank you, and...okay, yes.
So there are most definitely perks. I look forward to having a whole pile next to my bed to get through, my nightstand has been looking a little empty as of late.
Happy Fucking New Year!
His name is Gale. I will give him your number. Anyway, yeah that stupid blog who is now texting everyone about certain people’s exploits! I’m not alright, Hillary hates me and so does Zeke. Everything is just a freaking mess.
Hmm? Is there something you’re not telling me?’
That would be great, thank you. Are you...really? They have no right to invade other's privacy like that - have you found out who is behind it all? I-I'm...I'm sure that's not true, Zachary, but is there anything I can do to help?
I...h-had someone over for dinner, a-as a thank you for a gift.
Maybe Just a Half a Drink More || Alison & Daniel
She was making him uncomfortable, or at least she thought she was making him uncomfortable. Alison noticed the way he changed color and looked away when he realized that she wasn’t talking about an actually person, and wondered why he had reacted that way. Was he nervous? He had no reason to be. After all, it wasn’t a date. He’d made that pretty clear, and yet he looked as though this was the first time he’d ever had a girl over for dinner. “It’s really good,” she nodded, forgetting about Daniel’s reaction for a moment as she went on to explain the book with a sudden glint in her eye. “Basically, there’s this boy named Percy who’s the son of Poseidon, and he’s wrongly accused of stealing Zeus’s lightening bolt, so he has to go on this quest to find it and clear his name. It’s got a bunch of references to Greek Mythology like uh… Medusa! …and the Hydra and even the Minotaur and his best friend is this Satyr—” She stopped, realizing she was getting way too into it. “I’m sorry. I’m probably spoiling the entire thing… It’s a good book. I enjoy it,” she smiled, slightly embarrassed. When she was passionate about something she always seemed to lose herself in it, and it was difficult for her to curb her enthusiasm.
She wished she hadn’t asked that question. God, she always knew how to say the wrong things. What business did she have asking him if he was a drinker or not? If the guy wanted to drink water, that was his choice. “I-I’m sorry.. I didn’t mean to—” she bit her lip, deciding to think before she spoke again. Clearly this was a touchy subject for him, and as curious as she was, she’d respect his privacy and move on. And I brought him wine too, she remembered. Way to go Ali… Way to go. “Uh… that’s good. Drinking can bring out the worst in people, so you’re better off,” she smiled slightly, genuinely admiring Daniel for his decision. She’d seen the ugly side of alcohol through her stepfather and maybe if he’d had the strength to say no like Daniel did, she might not have had to move so far from her mother to get away from him. Maybe they could’ve been an actual family, or maybe the alcohol only accentuated his naturally malevolent personality.
Ali cleared her throat and looked away, desperately wanting to change the subject, which was when she noticed the overlooked piece of parchment that was left on the coffee table; her drawing. Soon enough a smile spread across her face as she picked up her latest work of art. “Look at that… and here I thought you would’ve thrown it out by now.” She looked at over at Daniel for a moment, analyzing him before looking back at the drawing, focusing on every detail. “Hmm some of these lines are off… those damn jaws, they’re impossible to get right.”
"Really good..." he repeated, nodding slightly as he did. "Maybe I will try to check it out next time I'm at the library." Honestly, Greek mythology didn't interest him that much - practically all the books he had read to do with it, as few as they were, had all been incredibly dull and rather uneventful, not to mention the fact that he still had slight trauma from studying a rather lengthy Greek novel back in high school. But the way Ali spoke about this Percy Jackson, the spark that was so apparent in her eye, the passion behind her words... She made it seem as though this book was the best thing that she had ever read, the best series in the whole of existence that had ever been published. He was suddenly eager to get his hands on a copy to see what was so great about it that made Ali so enthusiastic, so, Greek mythology aside, he most definitely would. "N-no, it's alright, really. Your enthusiasm is...r-refreshing, honestly."
He took a moment to compose himself, then let out a slight sigh and clenched his jaw. This was hardly the right way to react to someone who had asked a simple question that they had had the right to question, especially when that someone was a guest and was expecting at least an evening of at least semi-pleasant company. "D-don't a-apologise, please," he reassured her quickly, sitting up and forcing a slight smile onto his face. He blinked as she told him that drinking could bring out the worst in people, and he barely stopped himself nodding and saying, "I know."
Instead, Daniel went with the change in topic, as embarrassing as it was. He had completely forgotten to put the picture away somewhere safe that wasn't on his coffee table and made it seem as it he looked at it often - which he did, but there was no need to rub it in. He shook his head, then glanced away under her gaze, his cheeks burning hot once again. Luckily, a buzzer sounded from the kitchen, meaning he didn't have to scrape together a reply, and he quickly stood and straightened out his shirt. "Y-You can come through, if you like. Dinner won't be five minutes."
Happy Fucking New Year!
I think half of New York was. We were spilling out the door. Which reminds me that I have a friend who I will recommend as a bartender. Anyway, there’s this stupid blog who basically ruined the life of everyone.
upstairs? Why?Are you not feeling well?
I knew I should have gone down... I just assumed... [sighs] Please do - I think I've made enough room in the budget to hire another. The, uh...the Gossip Blog, yes? I got the text, but I never read it, so... Are you alright?
N-no, I... Look, Zachary, you have to promise not t-to make anything of this, yes?
