Day 38 of asking Daniel Howell to start a Newsletter:
I'd love an opinion piece on the resurgence of y2k fashion and aesthetics brought about by gen z, with an analysis on whether we can see any iteration and if so, how that manifests.
I have a lot of thoughts about it myself, but they are all jumbled up. I want to read a whole commentary on the phenomenon and then think "THAT'S what I was thinking!"
Day 37 of asking Daniel Howell to start a Newsletter:
REBRAND ALERT!
I've been made aware that Substack is not as anti-Nazi as I'd like them to be (source, source), so I'm gonna move away from that.
New name for this project will be "Daniel Howell Get A Newsletter". That way we're not associating with any particular app that may or may not be pro-Nazi. Further aesthetics/vibes breakdowns for this imaginary newsletter will come in due time.
The new tag, for people who like tags, for this blog will be "dhgan" - which sounds funny when said out loud in my accent, so I like it better than the old one.
I'm debating whether to go back and change all the previous posts to reflect the rebrand since they are so few, but I don't necessarily want to erase the switch up we're doing. Send me a comment with your opinion on this iyw, cause I'm still undecided.

A retrospective on the evolution and downfall of Glee (2009-2015), with a specific focus on how it influenced internet culture and how it was a catalyst for the 2013 apex-Tumblr era.

Day 35 of asking Daniel Howell to start a Substack:
"Is rating art cringe?" asks Dan. "Who are we to assign a numerical star-based value to a film?"
There's some discourse going round about this - at least in the online book community, idk about everywhere else - and I think it would be a good topic to expand on. Because I can see the value of an arbitrary, standardized, visually intuitive rating system, but I also agree that reducing a whole critique of a piece of art to a digit stifles critical thinking and media literacy in both the people who are reviewing and those taking in the review.
Day 34 of asking Daniel Howell to start a Substack:
In yesterday's Hard Launch episode, Dan briefly talked about the "loss of the preservation of media in a digital world", which is something that I think about quite often.
I had never thought, though, about how "discord has deleted the forum culture" and now I can't stop thinking about all the ways in which big online monopolies have killed small, tangible communities and how that is a big parallel to the death of third spaces irl (which is ironic, considering that a lot of online communities were built due to the lack of in person third spaces.)
I'd love for Dan (who I think is more on the pulse of online communities than I am) to write about all of this and more.

I just watched "Wake Up Dead Man" and it was amazing. I'm really hoping that Dan has watched it and I would love a review/essay that explores all the themes of faith, guilt, community and exploitation seen through the lens of religious institutions/beliefs that were present in the movie.

I'm super excited about the Charlie XCX mockumentary that will come out in January!!! I'm not even a Charlie XCX #1 fan, but I love mockumentaries and this one looks awesome.
If Dan had a Substack he could absolutely nerd out about it, starting with a full background on how and when he personally found Charlie, why she's so iconic, what her particular brand of pop star says about our culture, how this film fits with Charlie's messaging about club culture etc.

This Tumblr is equal parts subtle admiration, creative exercise and phannie shitposting. It's not a petition nor a plea. We're just having fun over here.
Would it be wonderful if Dan Howell started a Substack one day? Yes, I'd be very happy to see that. At the same time, I don't particularly think it will happen and if it does, it won't be because of this blog.
This content is irrelevant, it's for people who like the idea of it. It is self-contained, it will lead to nothing.

I'd love to hear Dan's opinion (aka Dopinion) on the death of third spaces and the role the internet plays in building community when meeting physically has become this inaccessible.
Dan's a self-proclaimed introverted, chronically online homebody, which I think is how a lot of us would describe ourselves. With this, you'd think that we (him and his fans) wouldn't need to have third spaces. But the constant push from the phan community to meet in person (whether that's setting up a world tour or a phannies local meet up) shows otherwise.
We want to spend time with each other, it's just much harder to do so in person because our interests have a global reach. It's like we need a sports bar for fandoms and internet subcultures. Would that ever be possible?

What's Dan's opinion on the new Wuthering Heights movie? Does he have one? Can we please have a sprawling ramble on derivative media and the fine line between reinventing and bastardising an original source?

There are loads of essayists online. I follow a handful of them and I enjoy their content regularly. What I'm missing - and what I'd hope Dan would be able to give me - is an essayist that's well-versed in meme folklore and internet culture.
I hear (or read) everyone say that any given thing being talked about is that way "because of The Internet". Brainrot here and digital detox there, but almost nobody I follow can talk to me about why the inherent meaningless of arbitrary numbers makes them funny due to the tangible but forgettable vastness of their nature; or how the public relationship to the concept of "camp" has evolved through the digital era and how that relates to meme culture; or even how monetisation has shaped the alternative subcultures of the internet and what it means for the future of self-expressive content creation.
I feel like Daniel would have some interesting insights on these topics.

I agree with what Dan said today on the pod about "letting people be weird". He was talking about all the discourse around Cynthia and Ariana and the Wicked press tour and he briefly said that there's nothing wrong with people (especially celebrities on a press tour) behaving weirdly.
I'd happily read an article where he comments on this and then delves deeper on the expectations for presentation that fans put on celebrities and what happens when artists deviate from these expectations (we could even throw in a bit of Doja Cat and Chapel Roan "betraying their fans", to spice things up.) I think he's really good at analysing fandom dynamics, so I'd love to hear Dan's opinion (aka Dopinion) on this.

Just watched Pillion and I NEED to know Dan's full opinion! In the HL-Ep.2 patreon bit, speaking about Pillion he briefly said "there's something universal about the human condition in regards to domination." Could he elaborate on that? Also, has he watched Secretary (2002)? That's also an amazing movie about BDSM dynamics and in my opinion it's even better than Pillion at showcasing the nuances of the power dynamic of Dom/sub relationships.
