The Lady Gambles (1949) Dir. Michael Gordon
"Du Barry Was a Lady" featured Mother in her Technicolor debut. Unfortunately, she only made a cameo appearance. It was a gag at the end of the 'I Love an Esquire Girl' number. Her name is in the last line of the lyrics, and suddenly there she is, on the arm of her pal Red Skelton. The camera closes in and she gives a wink. The moment was filmed in September 1942. Mother soon became pregnant with me and this bit, as well as another cameo in "The Youngest Profession," was shot just before completion of her next big film, "Slightly Dangerous." Besides "Slightly Dangerous," those two brief appearances were all the studio had to offer her public for many months.
While on maternity leave, the studio would have made efforts to keep her name before the public. She, however, took care of that herself, thanks to my father and their trouble-plagued union. Meanwhile, her studio kept hoping she'd get back to work. They announced to the newspapers that she was going to act in various films. The star of "Du Barry Was a Lady," Lucille Ball, replaced her in one of these projects, "Best Foot Forward." In that movie Mother would have played herself again, in a story about a movie star who accepts an invitation to be the prom date of one of her most devoted teenaged fans. -Cheryl Crane

Thank you. I could finally breathe thanks to you. If I had stayed in Korea... I've been thinking, watching you here. You must've needed a place to breathe as well. That's why you came to Korea, right? It must be hard for you being here. You did this for me, didn't you? If it's too hard for you... We can go back to Korea first thing tomorrow. You know... I can breathe anywhere with you by my side.
