‘Transparent’ - A portable performance piece by Daniel Longo / Re-defined words: Transparent - Allowing light to pass through so that subjects and objects behind can be distinctly seen. A pair of duplicate bodies on the opposite sides of two spaces linked by a bond / This was a live performance that took place opening night of my solo exhibition at The Courthouse. It included two incredible performers Ainsley Killingback & Grant. The two nude models had their faces obscured with a mask, standing in a custom made transparent box. Facial expressions were hidden so the main visual cues came from their body and performance: a representation of momentary and transient identity / The box was constructed with clear plastic so environmental surroundings will be visible to both the viewers and performers. Each model stood on one side of the box inside, and the only separation was a black sheet in between so they could not see each other. The black sheet had a hole cut in the middle allowing them to pass through an object back and forth / As it began, one model started with an ever-changing object in their hands (clay, easy to physically manipulate). This object represents a neutral identity at the beginning. The models moulded and transformed the object in their hands to however they felt at the time of the performance. They were instructed to take in everything they saw while they performed, and change the object to how they felt. When they feel as though the object has been manipulated satisfactorily, they passed it to the other model through the hole in the curtain. The cycle began, and continued throughout the 30-minute performance / The model’s facial expressions were never visible. I chose to eliminate the performers gaze by masking it, and in some way there is an ingredient of identity removed by doing this. But, the viewer’s gaze will ultimately become deeper. I try to define and explain the relationship between the observer and the observed within different places. Being a portable performance, it can be executed in any environment.
