Tom Tom Founders Festival
It's been a wild ride these last few months in preparation for Tom Tom, and I couldn't be more excited. There's 60 concerts, 100 speakers, and over 170+ hours of events jam-packed into this next week. It's going to be incredible.
Thank you to my colleagues and good friends who I've worked with to put this big thing on - I'm honored to be part of such a great team.
It's been my job to put together the innovation events. What are the big conversations across tech, health, and energy? And how are the people we see every day shaping our future? Aside from the concerts, I'm really excited for these events, and you should be to. I think we are often too unaware of the brilliant people that we're surrounded by every day.
Check out this quick video to get a taste of the festival and then see the full schedule at http://tomtomfest.com.
It's gonna be an awesome week - see you at Tom Tom!

Today I’m excited to announce the launch of HackCville Media, an online publication that covers entrepreneurship and creativity in Charlottesville. I’ve been working with our team on this for months, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it all with you.
With HackCville Media, we want to bring attention to the people who make Charlottesville such an amazing place to live and learn. Whether it’s music, tech, food, or social good, I’ve found that the people here are just driven to create. We want to bring attention to those people - the artists, makers, hackers, and just plain curious.
All of our content is produced by our super-talented student staff, from the music to the videos to our website. A huge thanks to all 14 of them and the HackCville staff - they’re the ones who make it all possible.
We’re launching today with a ton of content – talks with founders and interns at Coshx Labs, an exclusive interview with reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and a recap of the Entrepreneurship Group's startup trip to NYC.
And this is just the beginning – we have much, much more to come. But we also want to hear from you – let me know if there’s a story you think we should cover or if you’d like to work with us on a project.
Enough talk - go check out the site!
Over the holidays, I took an amazing trip with my mom to explore Germany, Austria, France, and the UK. We saw a hilarious British comedy show, saw the Eiffel Tower light up on New Year's, and went up the tallest mountain in Germany, all while having way too much delicious coffee and pastries. It was certainly the trip of a lifetime.

Last week Graham and I attended Brooklyn Beta, a three day conference for designers, developers, and entrepreneurs. Web professionals come from all over the world to recharge, reconnect, and reflect on why we do what we do.
Brooklyn Beta brings in some big names. CEOs and Founders from major tech companies, authors, politicians, and comedians all graced the stage at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. The most inspiring talk of the day came from Catherine Hoke, founder of Defy Ventures.
Defy Ventures offers former criminals an opportunity to launch their own business and become entrepreneurs. Hoke’s personal journey is fascinating on its own, but she invited three of her current students to share their stories as well. One of the aspiring entrepreneurs who was fighting back tears had just finished a 21 year jail sentence. He had been out for 44 days, but Defy Ventures is already changing his life. There are many successful examples to make you a believer that he and everyone else in the program can achieve their entrepreneurial dreams. The results are impressive. The stories are incredible.
We all want to make a difference through our work. Most of us do in our own way, but it’s easy to lose that focus in the grind of the day to day. That’s where Brooklyn Beta and any inspiring conference, event, or break come in. These events away from the office provide time to refocus on what’s truly important. I feel fortunate that I got to spend that time listening to people like Hoke who are making a difference every day, if not every hour with their professional life. I don’t know what it will inspire me to do (yet), but it’s the kick in the pants that I was looking for when I arrived in Brooklyn on the eve of the conference.

Clever.
If all of Los Santos fits onto a chip smaller than my pinky nail in 2013, what, exactly, are the chances that we aren’t living in a period piece programmed by Rockstar Mars in 3013?
Is it real, or is it ‘GTA V’? A trippy travelogue on the streets of Los Santos
Is it live or is it V?

Fire drill: can Tony Fadell and Nest build a better smoke detector?
This is the Nest Protect, a $129 smoke and carbon monoxide detector. Instead of simply beeping, it tells you exactly what and where the problem is, and you shut it up just by waving at it. It will last for years on six AA batteries, and ping your smartphone when they need to be replaced. And it serves as an activity sensor for the Nest Learning Thermostat, letting it more accurately adjust your heating and cooling as it learns when you’re home and away. It is ridiculously expensive — Amazon’s best-selling smoke detector costs $31 — and oddly beautiful. Particularly the black one, which dramatically sets off the multicolor LED ring around the button and lends a touch of ‘80s flair to Nest’s logo.
“We’re about reinventing unloved categories,” says Fadell. He can’t stop smiling as he shows the Protect to me. I’ve come to know that smile in the past two years. It’s how Tony looks when he feels like he’s made a winning bet.
