I think there comes a time in every person’s life where everything just starts to make sense. Certain things come into focus, opening up new doors and closing old ones. These revelations lead us into the next stage of our lives. Sometimes, it’s for the better. But other times, dare I say most of the time, these realizations are exactly that. A startling jolt into reality. You see, when I was a kid I was as naive as they come. I was an optimist. I genuinely cared for other people more than I did myself. And I believed everyone felt the same. Now, being an optimist, or even naive, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I think, as a kid, it is important to be somewhat innocent. To live at least part of your life where everything isn’t out to get you, and every stranger you meet can be considered a friend. Where everyone has your best intentions at heart. But with age comes a responsibility to recognize the reality of the world we live in. And by this I in no way mean that you have to take be negative about everything. Or even that you should be a pessimist. No, no. Believe in things, people, and even society as a whole. The greater good and human nature. Love, compassion, kindness, and everything in between. Believe in these things. Because they are important. But also, take these things with a grain of salt. For as soon as you’re comfortable and happy, as soon as you take a deep breath and become complacent. That is when the universe decides to humble you. And man, do we need to be humbled.
