Hi Tumblr! It’s been an *extremely* long time since I’ve posted here. I went to grad school and picked up an MFA and I completely redid my portfolio. At some point in the last few years I basically abandoned tumblr for instagram, since obviously I can only really handle one blogging platform at once. I realize that calling instagram a blogging platform makes me look extremely old. I promise I am a millennial and not 60. 

Anyways, I’m going to try posting on here every now and again, or at least updating the feed with new work. This painting is one of my favorites from the last year.

I spent most of September and a good part of October painting this for Rutgers University’s Alumni Magazine -- they had a special 250 year anniversary issue, to celebrate the 250th, you know, year of the school’s existence. This ended up as a double page spread for a story celebrating the changing nature of Rutgers’s identity over the ages, from the signing of the charter by Queen Charlotte of England (married to George III) to present day. We thought the best way to do that would be by focusing on the students and alumni themselves.

Also I’ve become a rabid Hamilton fan. I mean, I was always a fan of the man himself, but the musical is a work of genius and I listen to at least some of the soundtrack like, every day.

I promise that I haven’t forgotten about you, dearest tumblr. I’ve been working on a bunch of cool stuff the last couple of months, but chief amongst said cool things has been this great chance to work with the Matt Brewing Co. of Utica, N.Y. on the redesign of their Saranac labels. I’ve done tons and tons of these over the last half a year, but these are a just few of my favorites. Eventually you won’t be able to pick up a Saranac beer without seeing some of my drawings. Pretty cool, huh? As you can see, I’ve been able to flex an entirely different group of muscles doing this than I do in my regular work. Refreshing!

I’ll start post some of the other stuff I’ve been doing later this week.

I got married yesterday!

But also I did a painting for the cover of the mutual funds quarterly report in the New York Times. I like this piece in particular because I’m slowly trying to pivot my work ever-so-carefully in a more surreal direction, and I think I actually kind of succeeded here. Thanks as always to my AD, Minh Uong, who when confronted with an admittedly kind of weird sketch with giant fish, responded with, “I like fish! Go for it!”.

I haven't posted anything here in a while, mostly because I've been working on an enormous project all summer that I can't share for another few months. But lo! Here is my sixth Applefest painting for Westfield, New Jersey's yearly apple festival. I have been doing this every year since 2009. It is still nice to have such a lovely yearly connection with home. I should add that like every year, my only art direction was to put it during the 1920s, and involve... apples. Because I've been doing this for a little while, my solutions have been bordering on the more surreal lately. This was probably one of my tamer sketches from this year's batch, but that's probably for the best.
