Ambubachi Mela – the Festival of Menstruation

The Ambubachi Mela is an important festival celebrated in the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam during the monsoon season around the middle of June, when the Brahmaputra river is in spate. It is the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of goddess Kamakhya.

It is believed that the presiding goddess of the temple, Devi Kamakhya, goes through her annual cycle of menstruation during this time. It is also believed that during the monsoon rains, the creative and nurturing power of the ‘menses’ of Mother Earth becomes accessible to devotees at this site during the mela. There is no idol of the presiding deity but she is worshipped in the form of a vagina-shaped stone instead over which a natural spring flows.

During Ambubachi Mela the temple remains closed for the first three days – the menstruation period. Devotees neither worship nor read holy books, and farmers do not plough the land. After three days Maa Kamakhya is bathed and other rituals are performed. Buffalo and goat sacrifices are also done to please Maa Kamakhya. On the fourth day, the temple doors are reopened and Prasad is distributed. Hundreds of thousands of devotees visit to have a glimpse of and pray to Maa Kamakhya. Everywhere, you hear chants of “Prithibi rajashala hoi!” (”Mother Earth is menstruating”).

Like do you ever see Hindus blowing smoke rings around Mother Mary?? No. No you do not, because that is disrespectful as fuck and anyone with any respect for religion would understand that. Hinduism is a living, breathing religion with millions of followers and stuff like this tokenizes people’s beliefs. I’m through being understanding! Also, stop fucking tattooing om symbols on your skin unless you adhere and subscribe to the religion! it’s disrespectful! tbh I only use Ganesha and other Gods for Aesthetic purposes, As a Hindu, since there isn’t such a thing as a “Good” or a “Bad” Hindu, I fail to see how this tokenizes my religion. It is so diverse and complicated and we have no leader and no followers. If you wake up today and decide that you are a Hindu, then you are as much of a Hindu as I am. If you want to tattoo your body with Om symbols, go ahead. Don't let anyone tell you that you're Hinduism is wrong, because that’s how these cults with leader start. Leaders who ask for money because they are holier than thou. Also shout out to the fact that she’s smoking, whatever it is, is actually part of the worship of Shiva (Ganesh’s Dad).
