1) It highlights tumblr as actual social media based in community effort rather than status

2) It shows what tumblr as a whole values in media (in particular, queer representation, strong relationships between characters, emotional catharsis, and dichotomy of themes such as spending one's life building a legacy versus just living life)

3) Tumblr humor is based primarily in improv "yes and-ing" and commitment to the bit, and people will put 200% effort into pushing the bit even further if the bit keeps being fun

4) More than anything, people want to entertain each other, and being in a community that values entertaining others leads to incredible collaborative works of creativity that don't even feel like work to make

I was made to sit down and in front of me I saw a being of a beauty and might I find myself unable to properly describe. I was sweating buckets remembering the words of the captain of the strange ship that had me “Once the game is done the fate of humanity will be sealed. They will be safe from harm until that moment”

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath and in front of me I saw a square made of smaller squares 8 by 8 and black and white. I blinked confusedly a bit as I saw two pawn like figures. Chess? I could not believe my luck. I was not an expert but I was known to play every now and then “Choose” said the creature in front of me. Should I go white? Or black? White gives me the first move but Black gives me knowledge

“Black” I said, almost unable to hear my own voice. How was humanity’s fate in my hands? I did not have much time to think their champion made the first move Pawn to G-4 I decided to take control of the center moving my own king’s pawn two squares “Pawn to E-5” their champion made the next move. Pawn to F3.

I stopped for a second “Excuse me sir. What are the conditions for this game to end?” I asked.

“A checkmate and only a checkmate human” The leader answered

I nodded pondering the words they said looking at the table in front of me “Could anyone else make the decision for me or do I have to make the move to make the checkmate?”

“Only you can do it otherwise it would not count”

I nodded a couple of times “May I have something to eat?”

When I was in 7th grade, anime had started to appear in movie stores in the form of dramatically overpriced VHS tapes; 40$ for three episodes of Ranma 1/2??? The first anime I bought was Venus Wars. After that was the usual famous ones: Project A-Ko, Vampire Hunter D, Dirty Pair, Tenchi Muyo, Guyver, Akira, Wicked City, etc (Dragonball Z wouldn't be a thing until years later). Soon after, on the recommendation of a Junior High buddy, came along Overfiend. It had an "18+ Only" sticker slapped on it, but the stores did that for everything anime related, so I didn't take it seriously. They also didn't enforce it, and sold it to me anyway. I'm pretty sure it warped my fragile little mind, and it's been living rent-free in my head ever since. It's not my favorite anime, but I unironically think the first movie/series is good, and I like to occasionally reference it in fanart... (it's rare that anyone gets the references, but I'm always happy with they do!)
