This wasn’t completely unexpected. At some point, Fraser was sure of, or was at least hoping to, cross paths with Darius again. Now that he knew they weren’t very different from each other in terms of being human weapons, for the lack of better words, he was relieved that the first proper mutant that he came to know was someone who was fully and completely trustworthy. In a way, the bond he shared with Darius had shaped the opinion that Fraser would come to have, regarding mutants and mutates. They weren’t some kind of monsters to be feared and exterminated. And now that he was one of them, knowing that people like Darius were mutants made it easy for him to accept that not everyone not-human was deplorable.
For once, he wasn’t worried about coming across a familiar face within the walls. This wasn’t his half brother, or his ex-wife, both of whom had never had any affiliation with altered genes before the explosion. Seeing Darius here was a bit of a relief, in all honesty. If he didn’t see him any sooner, Fraser may have even gotten worried about whether or not the other had got to safety. All things considered, the outside atmosphere was probably at its worst for mutant-kind. As someone who took pride in not fearing much, Fraser was genuinely worried and constantly paranoid about being found out by the government. Just because he had taken an oath to protect his nation, he feared that this prior commitment would land him in the hands of the government all over again. Honorably discharged or not, Fraser always felt that the possession of such powerful abilities never really allowed someone to be their own person. Right now, he was owned by STEMA, albeit at his own mercy. If it wasn’t for this decision to find cover within the MPP, he would be owned by someone else. Someone more powerful and with who-knows-what intent.
He watched in anticipation as Darius got closer. It had been years. The last time he had seen him, if he could remember correctly, Fraser was in and out of consciousness, still unaware of losing a limb and in severe pain despite all the drips being shot up into his veins. There wasn’t really a decent moment that he got to thank Darius for saving him. Neither did he get the chance to say goodbye. Everything happened so quickly, Fraser doesn’t remember most of it. That part of his past was formatted into bits and pieces in his mind, and he tried not to visit it too often for this reason.
“Force of habit, sorry,” he heard himself confessing, not feeling the smile on his face faltering since he wasn’t forcing it. The soles of his feet stayed glued to where he was stood, unsure of what he was to do even if he moved forward towards Darius. Shake hands, maybe ? Or were they way past being so formal, still ? “Why don’t you join me for dinner ?” Fraser suddenly asked. It wasn’t like they were sat in a fancy restaurant with reserved seating. But he meant well. There were only so many people he didn’t mind eating with, and even if it had been years since he saw the other man, he was hoping that nothing much had changed. As long as this wasn’t as awkward as he was prepared for it to be, Fraser would know that Darius and he did not drift too far from where they had last left off. Being in the company of such an influential personality wasn’t always going to be easy, even when you put friendship in the mix. Fraser truly looked up to him – He obviously had never revealed this to Darius, for reasons unknown even to him.
Darius had long stopped believing life was going to go how he wanted it to. Honestly, most of the time he feels as if his own life isn’t even giving him a chance to react. Things just keep happening all around him and all he can do is roll with it. Just wait and see what happens next. It’s far from ideal, but honestly that could describe Darius’ entire life. While the man long wished to reunite with certain people, part of him was terrified of what would happen should he actually reconnect with any of them. Fraser was definitely one of those people, if not the one at the very top of the ‘people Darius really wishes to see again’ list. Yet, now it’s happening and Darius honestly does not know what he should do.
Things were simpler back when they were friends. When Darius’ biggest worry was taking a step away from parties and trying to get his grades up, things weren’t so complicated. Then, after losing his scholarship, Darius’ biggest worry became finding a home and a job. He couldn’t turn to his ‘parents’ as that door had long closed and not having a lot of job experience made it extremely difficult to even get started. Joining the military seemed like a reasonable route, maybe there he’d finally find a way to reign in his temper and figure out how he wanted to spend the rest of his life. That’s what he’d hoped. In the beginning things were hard, no one liked Darius because he was ‘rude’ and he had a ‘bad temper’. But he was only like that because he felt as if he couldn’t trust anyone. Then Fraser appeared and Darius relaxed. Not only was Darius comfortable around Fraser, he trusted him.
Things went along smoothly from there. Darius was already a pretty good soldier before Fraser came around, but he couldn’t go anywhere without constantly looking over his shoulder. Having a friend there to watch his back meant Darius was able to work harder and smarter. Years seemed to just fly by and the man found himself getting higher and higher in the ranks. Finally he was respected, maybe a little feared, however many also knew how fiercely loyal he was. Then everything fell apart when Fraser got in an accident. Darius remembers the panic and worry he felt. Remembers running to his friend, pushing everyone aside with his superior strength, then lifting the vehicle as high as he could. He didn’t care if his secret was exposed. His friend was in danger and he had the abilities to help him, there was no hesitation or thought, just action. Then days passed by like minutes, Darius confided in Fraser, and the other man disappeared from Darius’ life.
Only to reappear, again, years later, looking tired but very much alive and well. Darius didn’t know where all this reminiscing came from, though for once he wasn’t entirely opposed to it. “Well let’s try to break that habit and have you call me Darius, like old times.” He said, his smiling just a bit more prominent. His words made him sound like some old man yet, with the life he’s lived, Darius sometimes feels like an old man. But the sight of his old friend brought a whole new feeling of life, something that he hasn’t felt in a while. At the mention of joining Fraser for dinner, Darius felt his smile stretching a bit. “I’d be more than happy to.” He said, true excitement and happiness seeping through his shakily neutral demeanor as he took a seat next to his old friend. Looking to his food, the man realized that throwing it like he had earlier was not the best choice. Thankfully it was all still on the plate, just some of it was dangerously close to the edge. Honestly Darius didn’t care, he just wanted to catch up with his friend. “So, how’s life been?”
