“Kill you ? Where’s the fun in that when I could watch you struggle with an implant instead ?” Banter ; he was full of it. Besides, living in a world where she didn’t exist would be rather DRY, to his displeasure. If there is one person he can turn to, for a bit of light in the darkness that has enveloped them ever since the invasion, she is it. Even through the EVIDENT stress of her workload ( the piece of technology in her pocket show exactly how much stress ) Soohyun can’t help but notice that she is letting HIM cling onto the past, by staying just the way she was before the attack. 

A sharp smile is drawn across his mouth as she brings up the possibility of having a slide take them to their official headquarters, as opposed to the elevator. “The slide thing… Are you sure you really can’t get anyone to start that up ? I did get stuck in that elevator once, so–” he pouted, raising his brows to indicate his encouragement towards the idea ; another reason as to why the slide needed to happen. Kali’s next remark makes him lean back slightly as he eyed her suspiciously. “Wait, by girl you mean YOU or other girls ? Because if this is a date, give me five minutes. I’ll go dress up better !” Despite this being their running gag for months now, Soohyun hadn’t acquired a single actual date with her. But if he learnt anything, it was that she wouldn’t spare him a chance even if he TRIED. 

“That is just pure evil,” Kali exclaimed, her eyes widening as if surprised and hurt by his words. “Remember this moment. Because if that implant does that happen, I will go crazy and ruin your life, and you’ll be wishing you had killed me earlier.” Kali was grateful that he was still around and still himself. Their conversations were the same, not lacking the humor or teasing that was present before the attack. With the gloomy atmosphere and tensed people that had occupied the building, she was glad that they could still find some happiness in the midst of the chaos. So much has changed, and it was relieving that this stayed the same even if she didn’t see him as much as she used to. It just made her value each of their encounter a bit more. 

“I’ll file in a recommendation for the improvement of this place. Slide will be under there, for sure. There can be two. One with water and one that’s dry. But do tell me more about getting stuck in an elevator. I would definitely pay to see you freak out after finding out you’re stuck.” She narrowed her eyes, suddenly intrigued with this story. It would’ve also been a nice change for a slide to be built in the building; something refreshing for a stiffed area. “Drop the act. Asking me to grab ice cream was just another way of asking me out on a date. I see through it,” she continued playing along with the joke. She dramatically gasped, appalled at his words. “Other girls? Are you asking other girls on date? I feel cheated.” She dropped her hands that were over her chest to her side, taking a step back to let her eyes roam up and down what he was wearing now. “Dress up better? Are you thinking of a suit and tie? Because I’m thinking the less clothes, the better.”

Darius was going crazy. Being in this building for another hour was definitely going to drive him insane. Okay, that’s a lie. He’s just exaggerating, being ‘dramatic’ if you will. This whole promotion thing meant he was dealing much more paperwork than he was used to. Lower agents came to him, often, requesting to be put on missions. A few requested to be taken off certain missions. There were just a lot of formal requests and some not so formal. If there was anything Darius was learning from this experience, it’s that the people who were once above him had a lot more patience than he did. He almost felt bad for requesting missions so often not so long ago. Almost. Not to mention the fact that there were no missions that required his immediate attention. To be more clear, nothing regarding the Ravens has come up. It’s been nearly a year since the attack that brought down the previous headquarters, but now the Ravens seemed inactive. Though, if you asked Darius’ honest opinion, he would tell you that they were waiting, waiting for the best opportunity to strike, just like they did before. 

So no, Darius is not going crazy. He’s more stressed and slightly paranoid, but not crazy. Though craziness would be the only way to explain why he was so relieved to see Kali. She would laugh if he said that out loud, right? He better not risk it. Sure they’ve been seeing a lot of each other lately, and one might argue they were getting closer, but Darius still couldn’t help but keep her at a distance. He’s learned numerous times that people who get too close to him have a habit of getting burned. When it comes to Kali, he wants to protect her, not hurt her, not again. “That looked way too deliberate to be an accident.” He stated, voice taking on a teasing tone as he smiled just a bit. “But I won’t tell IT if you don’t tell our oh so wonderful directors that I’ve been avoiding paperwork. Sound like a good deal?”

Kali was grateful that got along well with most of the staff at STEMA, making incidents like this a bit more bearable. And luckily for her, Darius was a member of that staff. It was funny how all these people were spread out around the world at one point, and now they were all living in the same area, strengthened together by the attack and their ‘gift’. It was a mix of feelings when she was around Darius. He saw her during her worst, when she had accidentally killed her peers, leaving her in a hole of darkness. If he wasn’t for him, she probably wouldn’t be there right now. She would still in the war zone, being used as the soldier the government wanted her to be. But it was a moment in their life that Kali was sure was best to not be brought up again, not when she wanted nothing more but to leave it in the past. Pretending that part of her life didn’t happen was a poor choice of a decision, but it got her this far, and the nightmares were enough to remind her that it happened. Still, she knew she owed him her life, and it was something she could never fully repay him back for but that debt was always looming over her head.

“That depends on the perspective of it. From where I’m standing, it was definitely an accident.” She narrowed her eyes challengingly before shaking her head. “You’re stepping into dangerous territory, Dravek. You’ve given me some valuable information that can bring you your downfall. You’re giving me too much power over you right now,” she joked, relieved that she wasn’t the only one avoiding her duties. “What are the directors going to do? Fire us and hire someone more competent? Hah,” she laughed at the thought, wondering if there was someone else who could be a threat to her position.

Gabriel wasn’t entirely sure how to interpret the situation before him. Initially, he’d been on his way to the indoor shooting range to practice his shooting, but a certain EM wave had caught his attention. Normally the brighter, larger, and more unstable looking ones belong to large computers. There are exceptions of course, machines being accessed or communicated by many people or other machines can have particularly large waves. And, judging by the slim, yet unstable nature of the wave, Gabriel would assume it belonged to a smaller machine. As he watched the signals move across the wave, he noticed that more signals moved in one direction than the other, usually a defining sign of a communication device receiving more messages than it was sending out. Curious, the mutant followed the EM wave, until he found a woman.

The woman was Kali, someone he’d found himself working with very frequently. She seemed nice, but the two weren’t close. Whether that was Gabriel’s fault, her fault, or a mixture of both was unknown to him. Of course, just after laying his eyes on her, he heard her tell those messaging her to stop. For a brief moment, the signals being sent to the small earpiece stopped, but only seconds later the woman removed the earpiece and stepped on it. Gabriel did not need to see the EM wave disappear to know that the woman before him had completely destroyed the machine. He wasn’t mad, far from it, if anything he felt enlightened. A lot of things made sense now. “So this is what happened to all the other earpieces.” He inquired, more of a statement than a question, raising an eyebrow at her before continuing, “We could’ve talked about this, your underlings bothering you, no machines had to be destroyed.”

Just her luck that the person who caught her in the act was the head of security. She left a reputation in the IT department, where people were expecting her often, but now the actual truth was exposed. “Well,” she started, which was a cue of a bunch of excuses or anything to defend herself with which happens more often that she’d like, “one time, a dumbbell fell onto it. Another time, it fell into the toilet. I accidentally crushed one too. I’m just very clumsy.” How obvious it was that she purposely stepped on the current one must have discredited her prior excuses, but at that point, she became indifferent. What were they going to do it about it? Not give her one? That would only be a prize she craved for. 

“Would ‘bothering’ be a synonym of my underlings just doing their job and asking for help? If so, then yeah, maybe I could have gone that route instead of bringing death upon the earpieces. But then again, destroying the messenger is always a solution,” she declared with a nod. “Their questions are causing me stress wrinkles. If this face isn’t at its prime, what else is there left for me to offer to the world? This is all I have left, Gabriel,” Kali pointed at her face to refer what she was talking about, the serious tone drowning out the attempt of a joke. “Breaking the communication system just seemed like an easy, temporary solution to the problem. But now that you mentioned it, talking is always an answer too,” she mused with a nod, mostly to herself as she considered the alternative solution. “Am I getting in trouble? Getting banned from all tech?” Oh, how desperately she was hoping for a ‘yes’ to the last question. “Or I can buy you a few beers, and we can pretend that there was nothing to see here?”

“I just felt like we needed a change of scenery for once in our lives.” Magnolia said humming quietly as she walked next to the other woman. Everyone was tense and if Magnolia was going to be honest. So was she. She knew so much stuff about people these days. Everyone seemed to tell her everything and she wasn’t sure if she knew what to do with half the information anymore. So she just let them talk. She didn’t write anything down. She had just let them talk and that’s exactly what she did with Kali. Yet somehow she was able to call the other woman a friend within her short amount of time here. “You should have told me what you wanted to do. This was the best I could come up with on such short notice.” She said with a shrug before she plopped down on the ground next to Kali crossing her legs as she rummaged through the basket and raised an eyebrow up at her with an amused look on her face. “You don’t get out much, do you? Though it’s nice seeing you out and not stuck up in the headquarters all the time and I promise you I did not pack any spin-offs.” The woman said with a small laugh as she brushed a strand of her hair back behind her ears. 

“For real. I almost started to forget what colors look like. I’ve been staring at white and blue walls for way too long.” She was getting used to be confined within walls at this point, seeing as how that’s how it’s been for her for the past several years. Luckily for her, her job allowed her to roam around the building, while others unfortunately were cooped up in their office everyday. She was grateful that she was able to befriend Magnolia. It was easier to talk to her than the others here, and most of the time, Kali didn’t have to hold a defensive wall of jokes and sarcastic comments. Being around her was refreshing. Their dynamic was different, something new, something she wasn’t completely used to. To be honest, it was quite terrifying to Kali just how easy it was for her to be so open around Magnolia, but then again, that was her job. She had that special talent. “No, no, you’re fine. This is perfect. You could have packed a picnic in your office, and I would have been just as happy,” she confessed with a genuine smile.  Anything to get her away from her work. “Music to my ears. A woman after my own heart,” she teased before laying down onto the grass, her eyes settling on the sky above them. “I don’t go out as much as I used to. I’m just always needed indoors these days. I always thought I would see more of the world.”

The disappearance of his abilities was somehow a miracle ; one he desperately desired but never anticipated. Nine months Soon, it would be TEN months since hell had broken loose on STEMA’s so-called protected area. Life since then wasn’t exactly a walk in the park. The posh building fell on his way to work, and every day, the dark doors would glare at him. A security code was lasered into the back of his mind from how often he stared down at the fancy piece of cardstock he was offered. Why San Diego ? Why did he did he still choose this city to start anew if he was trying so hard to move past the protection program and the memories he made there ? 

The previous night, a pencil turned to dust under his touch when he got frustrated about solving a sudoku puzzle – it was all too familiar. The second wave took away his abilities that night, so why was he disintegrating things again ? Fraser stared up at the tall building, feeling a hollowness the size of Jupiter within him. No, he thought. Nothing or no one could make him go back. If only he waited for a split second before stepping back, though. First of all, he wouldn’t have stepped right onto someone’s foot, and secondly, he wouldn’t be standing face-to-face with someone so hauntingly familiar. “Sorry,” he let out, stepping away and back, whilst keeping his head low, before turning around and walking away ; and dropping his keys in the process ! – he wasn’t even going in the right direction. Maybe they didn’t recognize him, you know ? Maybe his glasses were the perfect disguise.

For what was supposed to be a secret building, it wasn’t so secret, not when so many faces were lingering outside the building. When you gain a feature of yourself that is so rare, you tend to flock to those who share that. Most mutates became friends with other mutates, and after the being surrounded by so many in the program, your friend group became limited to those only. Even with such an open area as San Diego, they were still hanging out in groups around the building, destroying the mask of the headquarters completely. 

Kali was standing outside the premises of the building, getting some air while she was chatting one of the other guard about the show they caught on television the night before. Nothing out of the ordinary or anything suspicious if someone was to walk by. Her attention was stolen when her foot felt the contact of someone else’s. Her instinct immediately built up for her to respond ‘It’s fine’. However, her words were stolen from her mouth when she was faced with a the face she thought she would never see again. Taken back, she stood still and silent, letting herself believe it was a mistake and just someone who looked familiar even if his voice and face was so distinct. Kali was going to let him walk away and force herself to think that she was only imagining it, but when he dropped his keys -- it was a moment where she couldn’t keep quiet. She never had a filter and barely was she ever able to stop herself from speaking her mind. 

“Sorry?” she repeated his word, one that felt like a slap across her face. “You’re going to greet me with a ‘sorry’ after all this time? Seriously?” Not giving him the chance to walk away, Kali quickly stepped forward to pick up his keys, letting it hang from her finger as she attempted to get a glimpse of his face again. “I prefer a ‘Hello Kali. How are you doing? It’s good to see you. I’m alive, by the way’,” the woman added, lowering her voice to mimic him.

Kyle had taken to wandering the halls a lot at this new residence. He needed to memorize things in his head, not wanting to get lost or run into things accidentally. It had happened a couple of times already, but now he was getting better. He probably only needed to go around the entire building a few more times to finish memorizing it, it was almost all down. Now he mostly just walked around to keep from thinking. Thinking made him angry. When he’d heard someone, someone he recognized the voice of, he stopped. He knew she was the head guard. He’d gotten into trouble a bit since they’d set up again, though it was nothing too major. Just breaking things. Raising an eyebrow in the direction of her voice, he nodded “That blows. Maybe they should get things that fit better into everyone’s ears?” He suggested. As far as Kyle knew, it had actually been an accident. He couldn’t see otherwise.

Kali dropped her innocent act as soon as she saw it was just Kyle, probably missing the part where she took it out of her ear and purposely threw the earpiece down into the ground. “You think with the advanced tech in this place, their comm systems would be customized to fit into people’s ear,” she mused, along with his suggestion. The piece fit fine, near perfectly, actually, but no one needed to know that. “But then again, we’ve also witnessed the failures of some of their technology,” she referred to their first project that initiated the wave of radiation, her tone still holding onto the bitterness that she had felt towards it. “What are you up to? Getting into some trouble? Don’t let me stop you.”

There’s an odd sense of FAMILIARITY that radiates off the walls of the new STEMA Headquarters, one that  b r u s h e s  through his hair and seeps into his skin and wafts into his nose. It’s odd because it’s a new location, but alas, it feels like going back to a place you’ve considered home for so long. He definitely didn’t ( MISS ) it, if he’ll be honest, but it’s truly good to be back. He likes it.  He doesn’t.

Warren Park turns the corner, and his stomach turns, that strange feeling of UNCERTAINTY coming over him as his eyes catch the woman stepping on the earpiece. He doesn’t not like her; in fact, he would admit it was certainly FASCINATING when, upon what can be considered their first meeting, she gave up on being their substitute teacher within five minutes of the lesson. But dread continues to flood his system. Perhaps it’s just anxiety. Perhaps. 

He doesn’t know how to respond, so he returns the half-smile, clenching and unclenching his hands, looking around the hallway AWKWARDLY.

Her smile quickly faltered as soon as she spotted the face of the younger boy. Warren Park. She had read his files. She was certain she carved a rather negative impression with him. Looking at the lecture notes and immediately giving up and now purposely stepping onto her equipment -- her credibility must have looked amazing. Even if embarrassment had found its home in her situation as seen through the details of her demeanor, she found pleasure in seeing a familiar face around. “I swear, I’m usually good at what I do,” she admitted as she threw up her hands in defense. “So,” she started, attempting to find a solution to make it less awkward, “have you had class outside lately?”

It was silent between them as her voice had pained him to listen to after all this time. This place that he had called home– He never thought that he would be so afraid to step in it again. Everything had seemed so different. He remembered trying to keep the building from collapsing but everything became too much. Staring down at the earpiece in his metal hand it almost looked as if he didn’t hear Kali at first. But really he was too afraid to talk to her after all this time. He had assumed that none of them had wanted to talk to him after all this time so Eugene had gone MIA. He was literally listed as MIA on his paperwork and he realized that was the best thing to do when he couldn’t control his powers. “I don’t know.” Eugene said, his bright blue eyes meeting Kali’s as he looked at her looking rather lost as he looked around the familiar place. It felt strange being back there. It felt strange seeing Kali again.

“But I’m leaving. Don’t worry.” He said bluntly as he placed the earpiece in her hand. As he placed the earpiece in her hand this time, you could practically tell that the metal on his hand was cold just by one touch of him. His skin was warm but the metal was cold yet somehow shiny and Eugene let his hand lifelessly drop to his side. He had almost looked emotionless and well– Eugene was emotionless. He was colder than before. Before he was an asshole. But now he wasn’t even that– He just appeared to be empty simply because he was empty. Years of trying to control his power he had finally given up and Eugene had realized that all that time he had spent on trying to control his powers was wasted after the second wave and now he was ugly with ugly metal splotches everywhere on his skin. That was probably the main reason why he didn’t want to come back here. He didn’t want anyone to see him like this. But he had caved in. He needed to see his family again at some point. 

It wasn’t easy to adapt to the new place after the attack, not when she was surrounded by new people and she barely saw the familiar faces she had surrounded herself at the program. But seeing Eugene there brought her back, as if she was back in the program and it was another day she was dragging him to partake in something silly. But the silence of tension between them reminded her that it wasn’t the same. Of course, nothing was the same, not after everyone became affected by the RAVENS doing on their home. Kali knew that, but yet, she still held onto the hope that things could go back to before, and Eugene being there only made that hope glisten a bit brighter. 

Don’t worry. That phrase was enough to provoke a scoff of disbelief to rattle through her gritted teeth. As if that was easy. She had spent months worrying, about everyone she didn’t know if she would see again, wondering if they were alive or dead, whether they’re being kept against their will or given a part of themselves away to the other organization. She had spent months worrying if everyone was going to be okay again, worrying if another attack was going to happen again and losing people all over again. “Eugene,” she said firmly, her eyes begging for his, yearning for him to just talk to her. “What happened to you?” she repeated, this time louder, forceful for a response. She wasn’t referring just to the changes in his physical appearance. It was to the changes overall. Her fingers reached out, inching closer to the splotches on his skin, not wanting to touch them without his permission. “Where have you been?”

Why ? Why was she constantly breaking things everytime he saw her ? Sometimes it was his pride, and now the poor ear piece ? He has to take a step back – only a precautionary measure because he had been under that foot before. “There may probably come a time where you can implant such devices, and hey, that way you wouldn’t be able to shake it off even if you tried. Landing under your slippery foot would be out of question,” he explained as though she would find it informative, but he knew she’d hate the prospects of such technology. 

“Since you’re boss lady now, maybe you can make someone make you the thing.” With her busy profession and him going back to school – not to mention the other aspects of the NORMAL life – he really didn’t get to see much of Kali these days. And to say he didn’t like it would be a bit of an understatement. “Do you want to grab some ice cream ? Looks like y– we could cool down a little, you know ? Chill for a bit.” He wasn’t trying to imply that her hot head needed some ventilation– nevermind, that is exactly what he was suggesting. 

It was a relief that it was Soohyun who witnessed her ‘accident’ than someone else who would either further investigate her of her doing. She got a bigger headache at the thought of an earpiece that would struggle to get loose from her ear. If that was the case, she would have to become smarter with her excuses. “If that time does come, please do me a favor and just kill me,” she gave him that power. She picked up the broken pieces from the floor, inspecting the damage in her hands before stuffing it into her pockets to get fixed later. It was just a matter of how much ‘later’ she wanted it to be.

“Boss lady?” At that title, a snort found its way to the surface. “The things I would make people do if I had that power. There would be a built-in slide right now. Screw the elevators, take the slide.” The correct thing to do was nicely reject the offer and get back to work, but if there was an opportunity to get a break, she was going to grasp it. How likely was it that things were going to fall apart if she didn’t answer back immediately? At his choice of words, however, she knew it was obvious how tense she had been. “If you’re going to ask a girl on a date, don’t throw in there that she looks like she has a stick up her ass,” Kali jokingly advised, attempting to relax her posture a bit. “I can’t say no to mint chocolate chip ice cream, though.”

“I think you and I both needed this, yeah?” The girl asked smiling up at the other. So much has happened over the years. So much pain. She knew that everyone was still recovering from it and although she was not there from the very beginning– She did know what pain felt like. She knew what it was like to be hurt in the long run. She had suffered through it way too many times. The woman’s hair was just as radiant as what she had looked like when she was a phoenix as she let the picnic basket bump against her thigh as she walked next to the other humming quietly to herself. “It’s a pretty day out, yeah? Let’s make the best of it.” She asked smiling at them. “I hope you don’t mind, but I packed wine and nice cheeses and stuff. I hope you’re not allergic to anything in particular.” She said biting the bottom of her lip before she found a nice grassy area and plopped the picnic basket down in front of them. 

There were a few things Kali needed, but none of which she went out of her way to get. A good night rest. A vacation. A clean state of her memories. Getting some time to sit outside and relax, though, was a step into the right direction. “Is your office getting too small, for you? I’d break that far wall and get some extra space.” It was a nice day out, but even stepping foot outside the parameter of the building was enough to keep her alarmed and worried of what could be going on inside without her there. She had to repeatedly remind herself to relax and to breathe, to take in what the world had to offer, a good thing rather than the bad that had been thrown their way recently. “The best way to make the best of today is to go biking, hiking, go to the beach, or play kickball,” she listed out activities that she’d love to participate in. “Do not mind at all. Alcohol and food, count me in. And my allergies? Just spin-offs of 90′s shows, so let’s hope you didn’t pack that.” Settling herself down onto the grass, she extended her legs, placing her weight in her arms as she leaned back, taking in a breath of the air. “Smells like pollution.”

Eugene was not even supposed to be here. He didn’t know where to go. No one had seen him since the second wave. The splotches of metal on his face had remained hidden underneath the hoodie that he chose to wear so that people didn’t get scared off when they looked at him. But Eugene was lost and he had looked lost once someone made eye contact which was why he had refused to look at anyone anymore. He had found himself wandering into Stema. The place he had once called home. But now? Now he was a Raven. But nothing was familiar there. No familiar faces. No people that he had actually cared about and somehow he had ended up here. Hearing the familiar voice, the voice of the person that he had once cared for so much terrified him to hear once more. 

The figure of the man had stood there. Not a flinch. Not a sound as he watched her ramble off about something that he probably didn’t care about. His blue eyes finally had met Kali’s face. The metal spots on his face reflecting off from the light in the room and he had just stared at her not saying anything for a couple of minutes or so. “Sounds like you should get that fixed.” He said finally. His voice had even sounded broken when he spoke. He had looked completely broken. Eugene stared down at the earpiece before he had picked it up in his metal hands and held it out to her looking down at the ground for that he was too afraid to look at the woman he had once called at sister. 

        He wasn’t recognizable at first. Of course, the familiar features were evident, but Kali’s tired and sore eyes couldn’t capture the details of most in that moment. It wasn’t until his voice joined the atmosphere that brought the knowledge to her, the knowledge of why the presence captured a sense of familiarity, not one that resembles those who roam the halls daily. It didn’t even sound like him at first but it also did. It was his voice, but it wasn’t him, not to Kali, at least. It wasn’t the same voice that spoke to her months ago. It wasn’t the same voice that she spent a few months searching for, only to give up with the thought that he didn’t want to be found.

         She ironically felt the air get sucked from her lungs, keeping prison of her words and thoughts. She would’ve grabbed him and pulled him in for an embrace. She would’ve had a grin on her face, one mixed with worry as she overwhelmed him with questions of his whereabouts for the past nine months. There would’ve been a playful exchange of words, harsh but childish jokes between them. Instead, she stood there, starstruck as her gaze didn’t leave the spots on his face, the spots that weren’t there the last time she saw Eugene. His body language was enough to inform her the answer to what would have been her questions. Kali took the earpiece from his hand before stuffing the broken tech down her pockets. “How did you get in here?” It wasn’t following protocol. Anyone who came in without permission would immediately be brought to security’s attention before being asked those types of questions, but protocol wasn’t important in that moment. 

       “What happened to you?” This time, her voice softened, removing any sense of authority that she was able to display before.

Her promotion to head guard had its perks but also its cons. She was finally able to have power to help, to create an impact, which became a necessity after the event months ago. The effects of it still lingered, consuming the atmosphere that created a tensed sense of air, one she couldn’t find comfort in. The new position also meant that every guard came to her when they had a problem or had questions that solutions could have easily been found elsewhere. What she would have once found solace in, considering the distraction and a method of keeping her busy, she now saw it as an annoyance. Her communication system kept getting interrupted at every second with questions and requests that found trivial and an inconvenience to her responsibilities. 

“Just give me one minute,” she interrupted the current guard over her system, taking the piece out of her ear and throwing it on the ground before her foot landed directly right on top of it, dismantling all the parts of the system. She stopped her movements once she caught a presence near her. Guilty eyes glanced up before feigning an innocent smile. “Oops. My foot slipped. Gah, this keeps happening.” Half of it was true. It was going to be the fifth time she showed up at the IT department to get it replaced that month. “Darn thing just keeps falling out of my ear and landing in the wrong spot.”
