the evolution of regulus's magical abilities go like this:

original dd timeline: great old one warlock, pact of the tome. he was given a book of shadows bound to the creature beneath the estate and was following cryptic notes left within by the ancestor, as well as adding the ancestor's old research to his own. his magic was powerful, but not his own -- he was a conduit for the heart's abilities to reach the rest of the estate and to further its own machinations through the bloodline of the ancestor.

when they fought the heart the very first time, regulus was to make a choice regarding the come unto your maker attack and refused to make a choice, being struck down instead. this caused a violent reaction from the heart, as the conduit it had been using to manipulate the world beyond was killed, and thus the cycle began again.

second dd timeline + current dd2 timeline: aberrant mind sorcerer. after the Incident outlined above, the heart and regulus's connection was stronger, solidified into a case of influencing the bloodline directly rather than using them as puppets through a pact. the magic is more varied, comes from within regulus without need of a spellbook, and can at times be cast without any movement or verbal command from regulus, something that reynauld noted first.

despite the defeat of the heart before venturing beyond the estate to deal with the Mountain, regulus's magic only continues to strengthen, a possible link to the manor continuing through him and sustained by the fact that the last piece of the estate that exists in the shadows is the manor regulus rules.
