@darklygrey
Yeah... Not really buying the whole "woe is me" victim act. Sorry (not).
โIt felt โฆ strange,โ Elain breathed. โLike you pulled on a thread tied to a rib.โ
โThereโs a bondโitโs a real thread,โ he said, more to himself than us.
I did a doodle ๐ฆโ๏ธ๐ท
Home.
Calling it now. Nothing terrifies Lucien more than the idea of falling in love again, and being vulnerable in that love. Especially considering what happened the last time he was in love. ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
Elain Archeron
Lucien and Azriel as Foils
Disclaimer: This is not meant to pit both males against each other, just to compare them. I love them both dearly. There's also not really a point to this post other than to point stuff out that I noticed.
Ways Lucien and Azriel Mirror Each Other
Abusive fathers:ย Both grew up under cruel, abusive father figuresโBeronย for Lucien and Azriel's father.
Loving mothers who suffered abuse:ย Both have mothers who deeply love them but were themselves victimized by their husbands, the Lady of Autumnย and Azriel's mother.
Brothers who caused lasting trauma:ย Azriel's brothers burned his hands, while Lucien's brothers murderedย Jesminda, the woman he loved.
Found families:ย Both were taken in by friends who gave them a place to belong. For Azriel, that was Rhysand and Cassian; for Lucien, Tamlin and later the Band of Exiles.
Complicated relationships with identity and belonging:ย Azriel feels disconnected from his Illyrian heritage, while Lucien has spent much of the series displaced, moving from court to court without a true home.
Similar senses of humor:ย Both are highly sarcastic. Lucien's humor tends toward wit and sass, while Azriel's is drier and more deadpan.
Women they cared about were brutalized by the Autumn Court:ย Lucien lost Jesminda to the cruelty of Beron, while Azriel has spent centuries loving Mor, who suffered from the same.
Visible scars that set them apart among the fae:ย Azriel's scarred hands and Lucien's mechanical eye and facial scar.
Fierce loyalty:ย "I will say that Lucien is loyalโfiercely so." "So is Azriel." The comparison is made back-to-back.
Emotional masks:ย Both conceal their true feelings behind carefully crafted personas. Lucien uses humor and charm as armor; Azriel uses silence, stoicism, and emotional restraint.
-absolutely lethal facecards
Despite all of those similarities in background, they have a lot of contrasting traits as well:
Social vs Introverted
He assured me that he hated the gatherings as much as I did, and that Lucien was the only one who really enjoyed himself.
Gwyn's teal eyes flashed with alarm. "No! I mean, I don't mind sharing the ring. I just...I know you like to be alone."
Diplomacy vs Subterfuge
It was there he sat, wearing only a white shirt and trousers, his red hair unbound and gleaming like liquid fire. Tamlinโs court-trained emissary, but a warrior in his own right.
Beautiful, but near-unreadable. Heโd be the one to look out forโthe knife in the dark.
Light vs Dark
Heir to the Day Court
Shadowsinger of the Night Court
Fire vs Ice
โEasy,โ Lucien repeated, and flame sizzled in his russet eye. The flame, the surprising dominance within it, hit Cassian like a stone to the head...
Az didnโt answer. I held his gaze, though. Held that ice-cold stare that still sometimes scared the shit out of me. [...] The beginnings of that frost cracked over his eyes now.
Poetic vs "doesn't need to resort to poetry"
Lucien went rigid, but he hopped off the edge of the table and bowed deeply to me. โMy apologies, lady.โ Another joke at my expense. โIโm Lucien. Courtier and emissary.โ He gestured to me with a flourish. โYour eyes are like stars, and your hair like burnished gold.โ
Cassian shot him a glare. โI donโt see you spouting poetry, brother.โ Azriel crossed his arms, still smiling faintly. โI donโt need to resort to it.โ
Reluctant but skilled warrior vs "Trained for Violence"
Like Rhys, he usually opted for words to win his battles, but Iโd seen him and Tamlin in the practice ring. He knew how to handle a weapon. How to kill, if need be.
Around and around the ring, fists flying, teeth bared in fierce grins, [Cassian and Azriel] lost themselves to sweat and sun and breathing. They'd been born for such things, endured centuries of training that had honed their bodies into instruments of violence.
"Loved and Lost" vs "Unrequited Love"
Lucien had a loving relationship with Jesminda, and had to go through the pain of losing her.
Azriel has loved Mor for centuries, without her returning his feelings, leaving him to endure the pain of never being with her.
Their biggest differences lie not in what they've been through, but in how they've learned to survive it.
Does anyone know when this book gets good? I'm like 20% in and debating a DNF ๐ฌ
If Gwynriel wasnโt a possibility then SJM wouldnโt have wrote Gwyn in the bonus chapter at all. If Gwynriel wasnโt a possibility then Azriel wouldnโt have been the only male Gwyn has been comfortable alone with in the past two years. And if Gwynriel wasnโt a possibility then Azriel would have returned the necklace like he originally planned to and wouldnโt have went down to the House of Wind and asked Clotho to give it to Gwyn. (That was what he requested first btw. Meaning Gwyn was the first one he thought to give it to after Elain returned it. Iโm still side eyeing him for that though, because I donโt think thatโs going to go over the way he thinks it will and will definitely come back to bite him if both women find out. But I donโt see them fighting with each other over Azriel. If theyโre going to be mad at anyone itโs Azriel, not each other.)
But to say that Gwynriel isnโt a possibility makes me think that you didnโt really read the Bonus Chapter or see SJM insist that her friend who was an el/riel shipper at the tike read it. (The same friend who turned Gwynriel after reading it because she only wanted el/riel together to make Az happy)
So yeah theyโre as much of a possibility as any other ship is. Thats one of the things that makes this book intriguing.
People who are saying that Gwynriel isnโt a possibility didnโt read ACOSF. Doesnโt surprise me since back in 2021 multiple elriels admitted to skimming through ACOSF. So I really canโt take their opinions seriously.
Yeah doesnโt surprise me. Nesta is one of my favorite characters in the series so I loved reading her book and seeing her journey and loving Nestaโs character even before ACOSF came out exposed me to the parts of the fandom who disliked her the most. Which a lot of them were/are Elrielโs. (A lot of them like her now. But they didnโt before her book) which itโs odd they scream about misogyny towards female characters yet they were more than happy to partake in some of it themselves by hating Nesta for also avoiding her mate and rejecting his advances. Odd how they didnโt have that same mentality when it was a female character they didnโt like. Like disliking her for how she talks to Feyre is one thing but saying that sheโd be lucky to even have a guy like Cassian and she wasnโt deserving of him anyway is another. And donโt get me started on how many people wished death on her character just because sheโs not overtly niceโฆ.
Oh I 100% agree with you. The way they hated on Nesta before her book, said that she was terrible for avoiding Cassian, said that she didnโt deserve Cassian, said she deserved to die, and etc. Some of them still hate her even after her book.
To dislike a character is fine. I understand not everyone is going to like the same characters so thatโs not the issue. The issue is the blatant hypocrisy spewing out from the elriels.
They talk about how they hate Nesta or the Valkyrie, but if anyone says anything even remotely negative about Elain they freak the fuck out and start calling people โmisogynisticโ. I really need them to actually look up that word in the dictionary, because they throw that word around far too often for situations that donโt fit the definition.

SHADOWS FAVORITE here I come!!!!
During my rereading, I've been paying more attention to the proximity of significant scenes or references.
I noticed these two scenes:
ACOSF Chapter 57, where Cassian reads Elain's Hewn City outfit to filth :
Elain in black was ridiculous. Yes, she was beautiful, but the color of her long-sleeved, modest gown leeched the brightness from her face. It wore her, rather than the other way around.
...
Heโd never once in the two years heโd known her found Elain to be plain, but wearing black, no matter how much she claimed to be part of this court โฆ It sucked the life from her.
Other than a mention of where Elain stands once the IC's entrances are done and talking to Eris, she doesn't appear again, even in the background, until...
ACOSF Chapter 58, where Nesta says this when Elain enters the scene:
Gone was the ill-suited black dress from the ball, replaced by a gown of amethyst velvet, her hair half-up and curling down to her waist. She glowed with good health.
So... In back-to-back chapters, we have Elain:
In black - Brightness? Leeched. Life? Sucked out of her.
In amethyst - Glowing with good health
With the way this fandom throws quotes and snippets around, I feel like it's easy to forget where certain scenes exist in relationships.

AND ANOTHER THING ! thereโs a difference bw calling elain unexplored or straight up not liking her vs calling her boring or even worse useless like she can see the fucking future how is that boring ??? Even if she wishes she was human and rebels against her powers and herself, is that not interesting? please in her limited appearances sheโs faced her fears and fought and been sneaky and selfish and stood up for herself and admitted wrongdoing and apologized AND made friends and been sweet and kind and loving and happy and sad and horny and then after a life of loss and neglect and trauma she dared to dream about having a garden and a home and someone to love how is that boring ???????
Amen. And sorry to hijack your post but you defending Elain has me heated. But I hate people who are not even fans of her acting like all of us who are are "putting her on a pedestal" and "don't think she has flaws". First of all, fangirls literally idolize and baby the shit out of their male favorites and no one bats an eye because seeing the best in a male character is considered standard fare. Second, there is more to flawed characters than making bitchy remarks or playing the role of the mean girl so many who hate Elain want to cast her in. Being a people pleaser IS a flaw. Hiding your wants and feelings IS a flaw. Being too scared to venture outside of your bubble IS a flaw. Running away from your destiny IS a flaw. And these are all things that Elain will have to face in her story and makes her an interesting character all on her own with exactly what has been presented to us. She will have to become independent from her family, learn how to control her powers which are OBJECTIVELY the COOLEST we've seen and OP as hell. And she will have a romance with easily the hottest and most interesting male character in this series who has oodles of his own backstory and character development and destiny too. Elain fans see all of that potential and we are EXCITED. Just because she isn't your favorite doesn't mean we are delusional or "in for a rude awakening" whatever that means.
And most of y'all are so ship war brain rotted you can't even see that people who ship the same couples as you have legitimate reasons and interpretations for loving a character you deem boring and uninteresting. All because you'd rather win and be oppositional to a fault against an "enemy" than accept the diversity of opinions in your fan spaces.
Seeing people vehemently defend Elain ๐ฉ
i really donโt have the time to be the way i am

I know at this point we are all regurgitating the same things in different fonts, but it's really interesting to me that Elain keeps getting pigeon-holed as introverted and quiet, when it's been expressed multiple times that she was NEVER like that before.
Elain was social and loved parties. She was gearing up for a life as human Lord's wife, and all the politics and social graces that life would afford her. She could influence people and make friends easily. She was kind and warm and open.
She is not that way right now. Who she has become has been filtered through the lens of her intense trauma that she has yet to begin to unpack and finding her mate during that time.
SO ON THE FLIPSIDE
Everyone in the fandom can agree, whole-heartedly, we miss our sassy, mouthy fox boy. Who loved to mingle with other courts, travel, make connections, etc. But we all also agree HE IS NOT THAT WAY RIGHT NOW. Who he has become has been filtered through the lens of his intense trauma and finding his mate while the only security he'd known for decades was crumbling under his feet.
Of course they are avoiding each other - they are also avoiding THEMSELVES. How are they supposed to get to know another person when they don't even recognize themselves right now?
And more than that... this isn't just the concept that "well, Az sees her at her lowest and want her" as much as "Az wants someone who ISN'T in her true form right now." AND THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE.
Characters do not begin their REAL arc already healed and ready. They start at their lowest point and grow from there. That's why SJM saying that Elain and Lucien have a lot of healing to do TOGETHER is SO important.
As our Power of Truth princess said, "She's not ready. And neither is he."
