“Well then, what do you suppose we’ll tell the Commander when he asks for our leads then? Since they’ll be missing from our report.” Lightyear was in no way convinced, he was merely humoring Darkmatter for the remaining minutes until they reached the station. “You know what the consequences are for fraudulent reports.”
Lightyear sighed once more, narrowing his eyes. “That’s not the point of recon, Warp, and don’t switch the subject on me – if we turn in contradicting details it will be bad for both of us. Let’s review what we’re going to write, shall we?”
“Oh, craters, Buzz-- are you going to let that tightass run your entire life for you?” Warp’s face was quick to take on the expression of a scowl. “As if our report would get to him. This was basic stuff we did here. A real kiddie operation.” He neglected to divulge further his opinion on the apparent maturity of the smuggling operation.
Continued Warp: “It’s more likely it’d get shelved instead of put on Nebula’s desk. Especially given you wrote half the damn rules in the Mission Manuel. Why would he ever think you’d fudge a minor report here and there, huh? Or me, for that matter, given you picked me as a partner.” Much to Warp’s chagrin at times like these. He suspected that Ty Parsec wouldn’t have expressed so much opposition.
spaceranged :
“ YOU’RE FORGETTING WE still have to be due back at HQ for recon assignments soon, Darkmatter. ” Despite his firm rebuttal, Lightyear sighed, his hands steady on the controls. “ – What exactly did you have in mind ? ”
“We just... Summarize a bit in our report. Y’know, leave out the whole bit about us having to ask for help from children.” Even then Warp was over-simplifying. The case had really been that Warp had taken to heckling a gaggle of ruffian teenagers for information. It had proven itself a useful tactic in the end-- the local smuggler was employing teen labor --but it was still a grievous step outside of Space Ranger conduct.
“It’ll save us work in the end, anyway. Then we can get to the fun stuff.” ‘The fun stuff’ being the aforementioned reconnaissance. “What kind of case do you think they’ll hand us this time, eh, Buzz? I hope we have to visit a hot vacay spot as tourists again.”
@spaceranged
“Come on, Lightyear. You worry too much. A little bending of regulation here and there doesn’t hurt-- especially if you leave it out of your report. We saved the day in the end, didn’t we?”
ooc. is anyone here even still active
“ WE’VE DONE THIS countless times, warp – i’m sure you’ll manage once again. ” buzz observed with a bit of a haughty air. he couldn’t help but feel a smidgen of satisfaction that he was filing the paperwork faster than his partner. it was true that their friendship still maintained a bit of the rivalry that was reminiscent of their academy days. with a sigh, lightyear looked up from stacking his completed forms. at this rate ; their comrades would be finishing the pizza by the time they arrived ! buzz wasn’t having that. grin still intact, he crossed his arms over his chest, countering warp’s comment. “ save that talk for the bowling alley warp – ” walking over to his partner’s desk, he pointed at several slots, giving darkmatter the intel he needed to wrap things up.
“Hold on, would you, Lightyear? Craters, it’s like you’re more impatient than I am.” A beat passed before Warp realized what he’d said-- “Not that I am, mind, but still...!” He hunched over to scribble his last few words down (some fluff about what they’d seen on their mission; it wasn’t true but it wasn’t untrue, either) before landing the last form in his ‘complete’ stack. “There! Finally! I can get out of this God-awful chair...” Warp stood and cracked his back with a grunt. “I think this part of the job beats me up more than chasing down criminals...”
“ REGULATIONS STATE THE URGENCY for us to file our reports in a timely manner, darkmatter. this is all procedure – and yet i’m HARDLY surprised that you’re complaining about it again. we both know that the sooner we get through this mountain – the sooner we can hit the bowling alleys before it gets too crowded ! ” even as buzz commented on warp’s habitual disdain for paperwork, his own pen didn’t halt across the page, determined to finish the last sentence. glancing up afterward, a sportive grin replaced his serious expression. “ loser’s buying drinks tonight, remember ? ”
@darkmctter :: starter call
“Oh come on Lightyear, you know I write slow! I’ve already lost points for bad handwriting at this point. Cut me some slack.” Warp grumbled as he slid aside one complete form and hastily grabbed the next blank one. What was all this even for? Why on Earth was the soil consistency of the asteroid they’d been on important? Wasn’t there an easier way to keep track of all that? “If I have to buy drinks for you one more time, I swear... I don’t know what, but I swear something’ll happen!”
“ hilarious, warp. ” despite the final comment made by his partner, buzz was actually quite pleased with the answer he gave. in actuality, he was going to give one about the importance of heroism among space rangers – but he figured warp might give him the ‘try again’ look. besides – there was something about OUTER SPACE that he’d admired since he was a JUNIOR living with nana lightyear. it became something he’d pursued – something for the better good of the galaxy. “ what do you say we head over to cosmos’ eh ? that talk about their cosmic chili’s got me feeling FAMISHED. ”
“I like this new train of thought you’re having, buddy!” Warp gave Buzz a hearty pat on the back and started making his way back to their cruiser, 42. “Deep talks about space and good chili-- I can get behind that.” There was a bit of a strut to his step that he tended not to bother with while on desolate rocks such as this, but it wasn’t hard to understand why. Evidently he’d struck a chord with Buzz that, for once, had resonated pleasantly.

While people are busy worrying about finding other planets to colonize, I’m kind of wondering why we even need planets at all.

“ it made me feel – not so hungry anymore. hmm – but something does make me feel, DIFFERENT. this, warp. ” buzz gestured out the viewport, at the infinite expanse in front of them. “ space. ”
“Oh.” Warp glanced out and around, blinking a few times. He should have figured-- he of all people could understand that, at least. Why else would he have become a Space Ranger? Warp rubbed his palms together a bit. Well, there were other reasons, but the main one had always been because of a fascination in the heavens. “Hey-- hey hey hey, big guy, looks like there is something going on in that block head of yours!”
