Tumblr Fuckery (I figured it out)

If you use custom themes/pages and have been having issues with shadow-banning/soft-blocking (whether by not appearing on the dashboard, posts not appearing in tag searches or notifications not working) this might be for you. Hopefully, anyways.

Tumblr bugs have been an issue for a long time, but it came to a head 1-2 weeks ago when my posts stopped appearing in tag searches altogether. Friends mentioned that I wasn't appearing on their dashboard for a hot sec, so I'd gone fully ghost by this point, and thought it was just a case of being forever-cursed, as a lot of accounts on here are.

When I attempted to edit a page, I received this message:

...essentially saying I couldn't do anything to edit my blog. Couldn't even delete a character. And considering I'd edited a page about 1-2 weeks prior, things were adding up. So, I did some digging and found a reddit post of people sharing similar issues, with a link to this announcement post.

The Summary:

Tumblr no longer allows JavaScript by default.

Tumblr will automatically remove anything with JavaScript in it.

Previous pages aren't affected, but new changes from here on out will be.

Why:

Malicious use of Javascript is an ongoing issue, as we've seen by porn-bot spamming etc. and it's gotten worse. Tumblr are trying to combat that.

Because when people have nice things, they have to ruin it.

The Solution (hopefully):

Send support an email and ask them to enable JavaScript use on your blog.

Turnaround is quick for this one, and my boy Henry here had it up and running within five minutes of me sending a ticket:

...and I would know about the turnaround, I send them tickets all the time. As is the type of person that I am.

Is this a definite fix for all tumblr fuckery?

I don't think so, but in the 24-48 hours since JavaScript has been enabled on my blog, I'm appearing on dashboards again, and tag searches are working. It may not fix everything that's wrong with this site, but it may slap a band-aid on a few issues if you're in a similar situation until the next issue appears to force us into going ghost. The immediate tell would be to attempt editing a custom page. If you receive that red message, get your tickets in.

I love this hellscape and I don't plan on moving out anytime soon, so every little helps to keep it functional. And if you like shiny blogs and fiddling with html/Java, get that script enabled, cause we're doing our part to keep it pretty round here.

Ok my first reaction was I didn’t like how the dragons disobeyed their riders like that, but after thinking about it I think it’s kinda brilliant when it comes to the behaviors of dragons.

First, both Arrax and Luke were really young and had absolutely zero combat experience. As soon as they saw Vhagar, it’s very obvious they simultaneously became a lot more tense. Then after Luke had his encounter with Aemond and left you can see Arrax looking in the direction of where Vhagar was in clear distress and Luke does the same thing before mounting. Luke realized their anxiety was high and he did his best to calm Arrax down before taking flight, but that all went out the window as soon as Vhagar gave chase. Now you have a child and a very young and small dragon that are bonded together in a very scary situation: being chased down by a behemoth in the middle of a raging storm (poor Arrax was flapping his wings as hard as he could) I personally think Arrax went on the offense to try and protect both himself and Luke, if only to give them a chance to escape. Both of them did the best they could.

Then you have Vhagar, an extremely old, massive, experienced dragon that is bonded to an inexperienced rider who is feeling a lot of unhinged rage and resentment. They were flying in attack maneuvers ffs I doubt she thought it was a game. And then this little dragon has the audacity to breathe fire in her face. Of course she’s not going to deal with that shit, as utterly tragic as her response is.

At the end of the day, dragons are not mindless war machines that will obey every command. They’re very powerful animals. No matter how trained or bonded with their owners they are, very powerful animals can and will do what they want.
