Gencyweek2025
Good morning Baltimore
a lot of ppl who call themselves antizionist are weirdly angry abt a couple of syrian jews finally returning to syria after decades to pray in an abandoned synagogue. like. i thought u wanted jews to “go back where they came from”
calling them “zionist/mossad agents”, saying it’s “hasbara propaganda”, kinda reminds me of when a libyan jew tried to return to libya to fix up a synagogue and he was met with a lynch mob calling him a “zionist” when his intentions were literally to try to reestablish the jewish community in libya.
a lot of the ppl saying this are people who actually live in these countries who are clearly demonstrating that the word “zionist” does in fact often mean “jew” in these countries the same way “groomer” in the us has been used to refer to queer ppl in a derogatory way, because systemic and societal antisemitism is still extremely prevalent in the countries that within living memory expelled almost their entire jewish population. and now a lot of idiot westerners are picking up on this and repeating what they’re seeing without giving a second thought to the history in the region or how “zionist” has been openly used as a synonym for “jew” in countries across swana for the explicit purpose of persecuting and expelling their jews. just makes me fucking crazy.

Does anyone else remember when Elon was like "if anyone knows how to end world hunger for 6 billion USD, I'll fund it" and UNICEF was like "we're going to spend a month to make a plan to end world hunger for 6 billion USD and Elon is going to fund it" and Elon was like "actually, nah" and then bought Twitter instead?
I think that was one of the worst things I'll ever see in my life.
I still think that should be the thing for which he's the most famous. It should be brought up every time he's mentioned. In any news article, any interview, any history book. "Elon Musk, who was offered a chance to end world hunger and turned it down." Put it on his fucking gravestone.
And may his gravestone be needed forthwith. Amen. 🙏
Tried to figure out how I've been running these things and I came up with this
SO MUCH THIS. it drives me up a fucking WALL when people call male witches wizards
my take on this
Some truths about the publishing industry because I certainly got blindsided when going in. Now I'm so broken by this industry I struggle to encourage aspiring writers lmao
This is ragebait guys. This is a content creator first and an author second and she's ragebaiting for clicks and trying to discourage other writers to thin her competition. Ignore everything she says.
Traditional publishing involves writing your manuscript and then shopping around and sending query letters to a fuckshit of agents until one takes you on. It's like an easier form of job-hunting because all you're submitting is a cover letter for your book.
The AGENT then does the work of finding a publisher FOR YOU and the PUBLISHER then does the work of promotion, design, layout, and assigns you an editor to help you. Editors are much nicer and more politer than reviewers on fanfiction! If you have written fanfic for any amount of time or even gotten a mean comment online once (1), you have a thick enough skin to deal with an editor.
Traditional publishing is much easier than self-publishing and it is vitally important as many young and diverse people find agents and get themselves out there as possible because THAT is how we up the diversity of books.
Don't listen to ANYONE discouraging you from entering the professional world, ESPECIALLY ANOTHER WRITER.
Perhaps
Perhaps you might assume the above author really did have that experience. Perhaps you might assume that author...didn't get and still doesn't have an agent, and is thus playing tradpub on hardmode. Perhaps that author could use some tips on getting an agent, or perhaps that author already tried and had an even worse experience with agents than she did working directly with publishers.
Perhaps the above author is truly trying to discourage other authors purely out of a profit based, selfish motive to cut down competition before it arises. Perhaps. But. Even if that were true? So what. Some writers who were already hesistant about tradpub get more hesitant. Maybe they quit writing entirely (and if they do...why? This wasn't even a publisher or editor saying naw don't bother), maybe they switch gears and move to indie/selfpub. Tradpub is far from the only option. Something which, btw, the above author points out. Selfishly pointing other writers at another publishing avenue that. Is also book selling competition for her, if less directly. Hmm.
And like, look, I don't know this author personally. I don't know how sincere she's being or how honest or whatever. What I've seen of her is at least consistent (tradpub lack of moneyflow = eat shit wannabe readers I gotta pay my bills before I can write) and...plausible. And? Not explicitly directing people not to try to publish, but presenting difficulties you may face in the field.
I dunno, I just don't see a good reason to take such a bad faith approach of assuming it's just ragebait, she just wants to eliminate competition. *Even if she did,* what the fuck is she gonna do about the billions of people who never see her tiktok and decide not/to publish regardless? Her supposed ragebait is a blip.
So a friend of mine saw that garbage tiktok and had a little ranty-rant, and I reblogged it because I agree.
You decided to respond with the above essay and these tags:
#i did like iron widow and i do think the author is being sincere but like. truly. even if she weren't...so what?#like...just say “that's not how i went about tradpub. you've gotta get an agent!!” that would be so much more helpful#and also not shit on the author in question
I want to make very clear that this response is unwelcome.
"Perhaps you might assume..."
"Perhaps you might assume that author...didn't get and still doesn't have an agent"
Their agent is Rachel Brooks. I didn't have to assume that, I googled it.
"and is thus playing tradpub on hardmode."
That's not how publishing.
"Perhaps that author could use some tips on getting an agent,"
Not my job.
"or perhaps that author already tried and had an even worse experience with agents than she did working directly with publishers."
Again, I don't have to presume things like this! I can just look it up!
"But. Even if that were true? So what. Some writers who were already hesitant about tradpub get more hesitant."
Yes, that's the thing! That's the bullshit thing that this author is doing in this tiktok that a whole lot of people are reblogging. That is the thing that is being rebutted above.

Are publishers and authors publishing books too quickly to capitalize on hype, and does this hurt the quality of their writing?
You know what I don't care about? OP. I reblogged with an explanation about HOW SHIT REALLY WORKS because I wanted to be sure everyone READING THE NOTES, everyone READING MY BLOG, understood how disingenious this video is, understand just exactly how this video is being manipulative and trying to work you into a froth and then make you think self-publishing is the ONLY way your work will be read, when self-publishing is SO MUCH HARDER than traditional publishing, because when you self-publish you have to do 57 OTHER JOBS.
If you have EVER applied to a job in the past 25 years, you are going to find sending query letters to agents EASY PEASY. If you have EVER been on the internet and gotten a mean comment, you are going to find working with an editor EASY PEASY.
DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYBODY THAT MAKES YOU FEEL DISCOURAGED ABOUT GETTING TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED, ESPECIALLY ANOTHER WRITER.
What this author is doing in their videos is dishonest and manipulative! Don't listen to them! Write your book and then start looking for an agent! You can do it! You'll probably even win some awards! Just focus on the writing, don't let anyone pressure you into doing more than that! You don't have to--that's other people's jobs! You can do it I believe in you! It is vitally important that you do it, in fact! The traditional publishers are the ones that put the books on the shelves in bookstores, and the more diverse the available selection is, the more of us get on the shelves! Write write write let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! 🪭\o/🪭
There are people – some in my own Party – who think that if you just give Donald Trump everything he wants, he’ll make an exception and spare you some of the harm. I’ll ignore the moral abdication of that position for just a second to say — almost none of those people have the experience with this President that I do. I once swallowed my pride to offer him what he values most — public praise on the Sunday news shows — in return for ventilators and N95 masks during the worst of the pandemic. We made a deal. And it turns out his promises were as broken as the BIPAP machines he sent us instead of ventilators. Going along to get along does not work – just ask the Trump-fearing red state Governors who are dealing with the same cuts that we are. I won’t be fooled twice.
I’ve been reflecting, these past four weeks, on two important parts of my life: my work helping to build the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the two times I’ve had the privilege of reciting the oath of office for Illinois Governor.
As some of you know, Skokie, Illinois once had one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors anywhere in the world. In 1978, Nazis decided they wanted to march there.
The leaders of that march knew that the images of Swastika clad young men goose stepping down a peaceful suburban street would terrorize the local Jewish population – so many of whom had never recovered from their time in German concentration camps.
The prospect of that march sparked a legal fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court. It was a Jewish lawyer from the ACLU who argued the case for the Nazis – contending that even the most hateful of speech was protected under the first amendment.
As an American and a Jew, I find it difficult to resolve my feelings around that Supreme Court case – but I am grateful that the prospect of Nazis marching in their streets spurred the survivors and other Skokie residents to act. They joined together to form the Holocaust Memorial Foundation and built the first Illinois Holocaust Museum in a storefront in 1981 – a small but important forerunner to the one I helped build thirty years later.
I do not invoke the specter of Nazis lightly. But I know the history intimately — and have spent more time than probably anyone in this room with people who survived the Holocaust. Here’s what I’ve learned – the root that tears apart your house’s foundation begins as a seed – a seed of distrust and hate and blame.
The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe a lifetime ago didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.
I’m watching with a foreboding dread what is happening in our country right now. A president who watches a plane go down in the Potomac – and suggests — without facts or findings — that a diversity hire is responsible for the crash. Or the Missouri Attorney General who just sued Starbucks – arguing that consumers pay higher prices for their coffee because the baristas are too “female” and “nonwhite.” The authoritarian playbook is laid bare here: They point to a group of people who don’t look like you and tell you to blame them for your problems.
I just have one question: What comes next? After we’ve discriminated against, deported or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities – once we’ve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends – After that, when the problems we started with are still there staring us in the face – what comes next.
All the atrocities of human history lurk in the answer to that question. And if we don’t want to repeat history – then for God’s sake in this moment we better be strong enough to learn from it.
I swore the following oath on Abraham Lincoln’s Bible: “I do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States, and the constitution of the state of Illinois, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor .... according to the best of my ability.
My oath is to the Constitution of our state and of our country. We don’t have kings in America – and I don’t intend to bend the knee to one. I am not speaking up in service to my ambitions — but in deference to my obligations.
If you think I’m overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this:
It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic. All I’m saying is when the five-alarm fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.
Those Illinois Nazis did end up holding their march in 1978 – just not in Skokie. After all the blowback from the case, they decided to march in Chicago instead. Only twenty of them showed up. But 2000 people came to counter protest. The Chicago Tribune reported that day that the “rally sputtered to an unspectacular end after ten minutes.” It was Illinoisans who smothered those embers before they could burn into a flame.
Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage. So gather your justice and humanity, Illinois, and do not let the “tragic spirit of despair” overcome us when our country needs us the most.

Greek Nolan fanboys uncritically swooning over Nolan’s upcoming Odyssey adaptation and I am wondering here how on earth can a Greek expect a seriously good Odyssey with a cast such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron?!
All those actors are great but it’s as if the cast director was like: “hmm what actors look the least like Greeks ” and then they gave a casting call to all of them… Only Hathaway and Holland could pass for Greeks. But it’s not just about the once again nonexistent Greek representation. They are generally miscast. Who’s gonna be Odysseus? Matt Damon?! lol Neither him nor Pattinson nor Theron fit in an ancient setting imo. And again I think they are all great actors. But they are miscast. And it is such a motley of a cast… it makes no sense.
And also I know a lot of people love Nolan but the Odyssey seems so alarmingly out of his element….
Let’s hope they’ll make me eat my words… but I doubt it
