“Paperwork dooms us all,” Bishop agreed silently, hanging back in the office doorway. Most of the Aurors intimidated him, but Griswold in particular seemed like someone it was safer to keep a respectful distance from. “I’m just trying to get digital copies of everything. Really, once you find it and confirm it’s all filled out correctly I can be out of your hair.”

“Digital copies,” he huffed. The whole thing was ridiculous. A lot of muggle nonsense. “For centuries parchment’s been good enough. There’s no reason to change. There are still plenty of quills and ink to be had. It’s not as though we’ve run out.”

Rolf yanked the file out of a stack and held it out for Bishop with an annoyed look. “Daft load of bollocks, if you ask me. Muggle rubbish coming in here. And don’t think I haven’t heard rumours about putting one of those infernal things in every office. You can tell whoever sent you I’ve got a list of suggestions for where they can shove their com-pew-tors.”

“What in the bloody hell are you on about?” Rolf snapped without looking up. The cigarette tucked into the corner of his mouth bounced angrily sending a scattering of ash down on to the case file he was reading. “Why don’t you make yourself useful for once and go get lunch?”

At very least, Rolf thought, that would get the kid out of his hair for a bit. Maybe he’d enchant the office door lock while Neville was out and get a day of peace and quiet.

The tickling sensation faded to a sort of giddy euphoria, but still, Neville couldn’t stop giggling. His hand flailed inside his robes trying to reach his wand. Even as his fingers closed around it, he realized he didn’t even know the proper counter curse.

“Griswold!!” he shouted as Rolf headed out. It was meant to be a furious yell but in his current state sounded more like a cry of delight. “Don’t you dare leave me here!!”

Neville’s shouts didn’t slow Rolf down. He kept on walking toward the lifts ignoring the fairly unimpressive threats. There was too much to do for him to add babysitting to the list, not that he’d ever had the patience for it, heavy workload or not. 

“Someone’s left an infant in my office,” he grumbled at one of the secretaries as he marched past. “Ought to send someone to see to it. Sounds like he needs a new nappy.”

He’d had his fill of Ministry red tape for one lifetime and it seemed like they were only getting worse. Didn’t matter how serious the problem or how urgent it was, there was procedure to consider and committees to pass things by. It was maddening. 

“It's just the end of the world,” he said in a mocking tone.

The spell took Neville by such surprise that he actually toppled over, curling up on the floor. For a moment he couldn’t decide it he was in pain or not – the sensation finally resolved itself into tickling. Laughter bubbled out of him, wheezing, sobbing laughter as he struggled to get back to his feet.

“What – the bloody – hell – did you – do –” he forced out between giggles.

“The last time I told you to stay here, you took it as a suggestion and ignored it.” Rolf huffed, tucking his cigarette into the corner of his mouth. “I don’t feel like going over this again, so we’ll see if the lesson doesn’t stick this time.”

He scooped up the file from his desk and stood up. A quick pat to his pockets to make sure he had everything he needed and he headed for the door. “I’ve got work to do, kid. Stay here. Or, next time, I’ll do worse. Understood?”
