Enrique enjoyed the festival. All he really had to do after kicking it off was visit as many booths as possible and make sure to pose with the kids. He smiled at the familiar face coming towards him. “Want a picture with Superman?” he joked.
*゚+.*.。 — WINONA HAD LOST her other half in the crowd minutes before, and now found herself wandering about, halfway searching for penn. the booths that lined the park’s pathway were quite distracting, and she wandered about herself, taking in the sights of the festival. her only current regret was not bringing along a pair of sneakers to switch out with the heels she wore—she was enough of a klutz on her own without the added clumsiness that came with wandering about a park in heels. she’d wanted to be as authentic to lois lane’s image as possible.
❝ apparently there’s more than one running around, i see. ❞ her attention had been drawn by the mayor’s words, and she laughed, wondering if penn had yet to run into his clone. ❝ should i be on the lookout for another lois lane ? ❞

Heat was radiating off of her. With each pounding step she took, she could see the exterior of Turn The Page with a bit more clarity. She hadn’t checked if Winona would be there, but she didn’t c a r e. She wasn’t going to sit around all day with the thought of Winona and Penn in the back of her mind. Cheeks burning with anticipation, nimble fingers wrapped around the handle, swinging the door open with a reckless sweep.
“You,” Trin’s voice rang like daggers, hazel eyes narrowing in on the girl she had been expecting, “stay away from him.”
*゚+.*.。 — IF THERE WAS one thing winona had no time for, it was the burning, petty envy trinity presented her with whenever they encountered each other. yet winnie thought herself empathetic, and so she tried to understand and accept trinity’s feelings, even if they were rather tiresome to be on the receiving end of. clearly the girl’s jealousy spawned from a place of adoration for penn, but it certainly wasn’t her fault penn didn’t return the blonde’s feelings, whatever they were. as her slight coughing subsided, she cleared her throat, regarding the woman with soft blue eyes.
❝ trinity, don’t you think this is a little. . .silly ? showing up to my job, i mean. i understand you’re upset with me, but you could get in trouble with belle for harassing an employee. you could’ve always asked to speak to me outside of work. i’d be willing to talk to you about it then, if you’re truly worried about something. ❞ she wasn’t condescending with her words, however, in fact they were spoken out of what understanding she could muster up for the rude girl. it was more than a little unfair for trinity to come to her workplace in order to insult her, but winona was prone to functioning as a mediator, and naturally she’d take it upon herself to try and get trinity to see reason. an unlikely endeavor, but one taken regardless.
yet, above all else, there was one thing that really did bother her about what trinity was trying to do, and she wouldn’t let it go. ❝ besides, it isn’t very fair of you to try and control penn’s relationships. it’s his life, you know, and i don’t think he’d be very happy to hear that you’ve taken it upon yourself to make decisions for him. ❞
*゚+.*.。 — WINONA FELT AS though all of her time was being spent at work, and it was true, but what was she expected to do ? her coworker had needed a shift covered, and she certainly couldn’t have said no. as weary and work-worn as she felt, she cherished the little bookstore with all of her gentle heart, and couldn’t stand to let isabelle stress over trying to get the shift covered had she turned it down. so there winnie found herself, crouched on the ground, currently cleaning up the mess left behind by a display that’d been toppled over. she couldn’t find it within herself to be upset with the little boy that’d knocked it over, his mother had been so apologetic, and he’d simply been excited at the prospect of something new.
the tell tale jingle of a small bell signaled another customer had entered the cozy shop, and winnie looked up from her spot on the floor, smiling up at the new guest. it was rather unceremonious, yes, but she certainly couldn’t leave the novels in a heap on the floor. ❝ good morning !! welcome to turn the page, is there anything in particular you’ve come in for today ? ❞
The bell above the door to the book store let out a viciously loud clang as Penn rushed into the book store. He’d been on the search for a certain brunette and figured that she was probably working one of her shifts at turn the page. It didn’t take long for him to spot the petite girl who appeared to be shelving the latest shipment of books that had arrived at the shop. With a bright grin on his face, Penn rushed over to the girl without much hesitation. “ Winona, “ He called out in a sing-song voice. Smiling, he casually leaned up against one of the bookshelves as he looked down at her. He reached down then to pick up one of the books that she had been shelving and perused it briefly. “ Ugh.. I don’t know how people can read this. I mean.. there are just words. No pictures, “ His voice was a bit dramatic as he put the book back where he got it from. It was a rarity that Penn slowed down enough to read, but when he did he tended to prefer things like graphic novels or comic books. He was quick to drop his thoughts, however, as he looked at her again. “ Please tell me that you are out of this place soon, “ He said.
*゚+.*.。 — IT SEEMED AS though the last hour of her shifts always went by so dreadfully slow. even though winona adored where she worked, time just seemed to stretch on in a way that had the tendency to frustrate her. she could only tidy up the store so many times before there was nothing left to straighten up, unfortunately. luckily for her, however, she’d found a way to preoccupy her time: a new shipment had arrived, and that meant shelves needed to be stocked, displays needed to be remade, and new advertisements needed to be put up. it kept her hands busy, even if her mind wandered off somewhere far away from the shop.
the familiar tinkling of the shop’s bell tore her away from her daydreams with a start, eyes gone wide like a startled deer as she turned to look over her shoulder. winnie recognized penn’s teasing voice easily and instantly felt herself relax, and in return raised a hand to offer him a wave from where she stood, books cradled in her arms, lips tilting in a sweet smile. ❝ oh !! hello, penn !! ❞
there was no point in masking her excitement at seeing him. some may have thought him trouble, and sometimes he was prone to mischief, but he wasn’t a bad person. still, she couldn’t stop the quiet huff of laughter at his critique of the book he’d begun leafing through, finishing shelving what she held before responding. ❝ some people like books without pictures, you know. ❞ her tone was good-natured, of course, and she slid her phone from her pocket in order to check the time. ❝ five more minutes, that’s all !! how’s your day been so far ? please tell me it’s been more interesting than mine has. ❞
ELLA HAD BARELY formed a question in her mind when she noticed the slight choking sounds behind the girl’s greeting. ❝ oh ! thank you, ❞ she breathed out, her smile wavering to concern. ella stepped forward, trying to act like nothing was happening, but her face was an open book. the cup of boba caught her attention. the pearls. the choking. AH. now she understood. ❝ i’m not looking for anything in particular but – ❞ she stepped forward to the counter, lowering her voice so only the girl would hear, ❝ are you all right ? do you need – ? ❞ ella mimed, for lack of a better word, puking out something towards the floor. ❝ i have tissues, i have water –❞ she rummaged through her bag for them.
*゚+.*.。 — HER CONCERN WAS appreciated, and winona tried to communicate as much through a weak smile as her coughing subsided, hand coming to rest just under her collarbone. deep breath in, she told herself, pausing, and exhale. ❝ i’m okay, now, i think — thank you for asking !! maybe this is a sign that i should stop drinking so much boba. ❞ her laugh was a little strained, her throat still felt raw, but she would be okay.
❝ i’m winona, by the way, but you can call me winnie if you’d like !! ❞ she introduced herself as though she wasn’t required to wear a name tag, but wasn’t that part of her charm ?
they switch it up !! when winona is struggling with her episodes, she seeks out safety in the form of marley’s arms around her, head tucked carefully under the other’s chin while netflix plays in the background.

having nothing better to do, cal decided to head to turn the page. it wasn’t a spot that he went to very often, but he figured why not, it was a slow day for him anyway. and man was he glad he came into the bookstore that day, as he was greeted with the cashier nearly choking on her drink.
sure he felt bad, but this was the first type of entertainment he gotten for today. pursing his lips to keep himself from bursting out with laughter, he walked closer to the counter, leaning against it. “is that the new way to greet customers?”
*゚+.*.。 — SHE COULD PRACTICALLY feel laughter bubbling up inside the man who’d just entered the store, and her face burned bright as she turned away from him for a moment until her coughing fit had subsided. winona placed her cup down on the counter in front of her when she turned back around to face him, her best customer service smile in place. she could recover from this. really, she could.
❝ oh, yeah, it’s our new customer service policy. you didn’t hear? ❞ she colored her voice with disbelief, as if it was shocking that he had not, in fact, been informed. maybe her pride was damaged, but her sense of humor was thankfully still intact.
“Hello cousin…” Said Jean, having a big smile in her face when she saw Winona almost choking herself. It was funny, but she not wanted to mock her cousin who was so nice to her “I heard that Turn the page need employees… It’s true?”
*゚+.*.。 — JEAN WAS A welcome sight. despite the girl having something of a troubled history, winona believed in the good of others, and her cousin was no exception. besides, jean really was trying, winona knew that. even if she seemed to be taking a bit too much pleasure in the fact that winona had been preoccupied with choking when she’d walked into turn the page.
❝ um. i’m pretty sure we are, yeah !! i’ll need to double check with isabelle, but i can put in a good word for you. how’re you feeling otherwise, jean ? ❞
