I know I’ve been away and inconsistent, but I’m here as an American who has the deepest love of an international community, and who is ashamed.
I ask you, look away. Don’t look at us right now. We aren’t decent. America is anything but decent right now... But it WASN’T the popular vote.
I need you to know, the majority of Americans didn’t vote for Trump. Actually, the majority of America didn’t vote, because we’re assholes, but of those who did, the majority voted for Hillary Clinton. We have this thing called the electoral college, which was created to protect us from exactly this, but it’s outdated and couldn’t predict how our population would be divided. So it failed us.
I have never been so afraid. I’m apparently nothing but a white woman who will not marry and therefore have ZERO value, but that’s of little consequence to me. If my only worth is found between my legs, no one had better come looking for an estimate. I don’t measure my value anymore.
But there are little girls out there who deserve better. And the minorities who were brought here against their will, or sought refuge (as if they ever wanted to seek refuge at all.), or simply to find a better life for their families. That’s such a pure cause, and yet hate poisons it.
Plus the LGBTQ+. I don’t set limitations for myself when it comes to love or attraction (or gender...whatever that really is), and I sure as shit don’t care what anyone else is doing consensually. But now my friends and family are afraid in ways I cannot begin to dream of. I’m so scared for them. . . But they are hurt too. They’ve been slapped with a hatred they do not deserve. They feel abandoned, and forsaken.
The elected vice president believes in treatment to “cure” homosexuality, and I don’t know what Trump will do. He didn’t align himself with this man for nothing. Or was it simply for the votes? How can we know? Pence is a politician and capable of manipulating Trump like a prepubescent on Twitter...
The sarcasm and disbelief is evident, but the fear is real. So is the uncertainty. If the worst thing Trump does is humiliate America on the global platform and throw us into depression, I will be happy. But I fear he’ll hurt those I love. I fear he’ll teach little girls their value is simply sexual. The minorities are simply labor. The LGBTQ+ are simply nothing. Nothing at all.
And I promise to all of you, I will fight tooth and nail to protect the people of this screwed up nation. I voted, volunteered, and trusted the system and it failed me and mine.
BUT AS I DO IT, please look away. Don’t look at us. We are not decent.
