This tumblr was created as a group project for our Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies class "Sex, Gender and Society" at Dartmouth College. This course seeks to explore interdisciplinary scholarly work that pays attention to sex and gender. Angela Davis published Are Prisons Obsolete? in 2003--the year that Nina Simone passed away. 

At the start of the polemic, Davis discusses how prisons, in some sense, represent the new slavery. Of course, slavery is the new slavery--human trafficking is so endemic in 2013 that we benefit from it every day. But perhaps Davis is right to suggest that prisons indeed are an iteration of slavery. They dehumanize, they extract profit, they exploit labor . . . they seem similar enough to me.
