seeing as the first half of the 2026 f1 season is over (felt super long ngl), i wanna talk about kimi and arvid and how media/commentator seems to portray them. obviously, this isn’t hate on kimi or super glazing on arvid, just some observations and opinions i have acquired.
kimi has had a good season so far, whether it’s attributed to:
the new car being better suited to his driving style
him not having much experience with the older car thus making it easier to adapt
merc potentially prioritising him over george
kimi definitely deserves the flowers he is getting, congratulations to him. BUT, we really shouldn’t be glazing him to this extent. the whole “just 19 years old” gimmick is getting super annoying.
like yes, he is doing awesome in his 2nd season, wdc leader and relatively consistent races (when the car isn’t misbehaving). but i also would prefer to hear about literally anyone else for at least 1/4 of the time the commentators spend on kimi. in my case, i barely hear anything from the commentators about arvid, his consistency and keeping up in the points for the past 5 races. for example, in belgium, we only ever got the bare minimum acknowledgment of his starting position. slight acknowledgment during the race but we hear about kimi who is 12s in front of everyone, basically just keeping up the gap.
the baby-fication (?) of kimi is actually quite absurd. i’ve seen others say that kimi and arvid a treated WAY differently due to their ethnicity. i can see what they mean, arvid having to prove himself twice as hard to get the recognition kimi gets. again, i’m not dismissing that kimi has definitely worked to receive the praise, but him being italian/white also definitely plays a part when it comes to fans who have unconscious “racist” tendencies, if that’s the right word? obviously, it’s not his fault, the world is unfortunately built this way but as fans of an ‘elite’ sport, we really need to be more inclusive.
my friends and i noticed that new fans, at least those in school with us, tend to stan kimi. it’s really not a problem, but i kind of see that as part of the glazing he gets. i can’t really comment too much on how people support their drivers seeing as i only joined f1 fandom (?) last year, but my friend said that the newer kimi stans are going all out in their support, and i trust her judgment since she’s been a fan since childhood.
to close off my ramble/thoughts/essay, by the end of the 2025 season, kimi was p7 in wdc. currently, after the hungarian gp 2026, arvid is p11. i’m saying this honestly, but i can see arvid ending up around the same place as kimi was at the end of this season, if everything goes well after summer break. so, i hope arvid gets the flowers he deserves and kimi doesn’t get too air-headed from all the glazing around him.
