Falling off the wagon? Ha, I fucking jumped and screamed âwatch this shit!â

If I am anything, it is violence.

The Return of Darvyn: Part 2
The young woman who entered the room was not the same toddler who had sat upon Darvynâs knee in her youth. No. This was the physician who attended him now. A daughter among nobility, a servant to her people, a maiden and a young woman of exceptional skill. All of this was met through the merits of not only a unique mind but hard work and dedication as well. And the reason she was summoned? Was because unlike many who espoused a gifting over the arts of healing, Aeviara subscribed to a particular vein of medicine which included traditional hands-on knowledge and the implementation of magic that worked hand in glove with her techniques. Techniques which had taken decades to learn and even more decades to hone to her particular level of prowess.
Darvyn Saiâdarn looked like anyone else laid out upon the table and for her part, Anashae had done well by him. The room smelled strongly of antiseptic and his wounds had been painstakingly stitched with thread which would disintegrate with time. On his flesh, too, there were circles drawn about the points which were deepest and might require the most focus. Her godmother, the scientist Anashae Dawnbringer was meticulous to a fault. The incisions were cleanly done and the wounds tidy. Her inspection of them found Aeviara looking from Darvynâs back to Anashaeâs face. âHave you administered antibiotic yet?â A nod was given as well as details as to which one and how much. The young physician found this to be acceptable. âAnd when was the last time you dosed him? What are his other injuries?â
âHe has three broken ribs, lash marks on his chest as well, and⊠â Anashaeâs voice trailed off for a moment as she looked down to the man who had been more of a father to her than her own. Her throat felt thick for a moment, but she managed to continue. âSomeone caught him with a blade here.â A solitary hand rose to draw a line from the underside of his jaw near the ear down his neck. âTwo more inches to the left, AeviâŠâ It was odd that the staggered breath did not come from Aeviara.
âBest not to fret on what didnât happen. I need to focus. Either monitor his vitals and keep him under, or clear out.â The Starsong Lady was already setting up a small side table with the things that she would need. Reconstruction of this magnitude took time but was better when attended to before scar tissue had taken root. It wasnât impossible, but it was hard.
In the hours to come, Anashae described the deepest of wounds as Aeviara utilized her technique in assessment and probed the wounds. Her godmother had done a good job in ferreting out the debris, though one or two of the sites required opening for her to gather small slivers and cleanse. Soft words spilled from her lips as light pooled in her hand and bent to the mastery of not only her will, but her skill. It was grueling work, fragile work. And despite all of it, Darvyn would be confined in his movements and recovery for some weeks to come.
When everything was said and done, the small blonde slumped down against the table and closed her eyes. Anashae moved her into one of the spare rooms and went back to stand guard over the still sleeping man. She was the first thing he saw when he awoke. Well, three of her at any rate.
âPet?â he croaked out to the darkly clad woman who was propped up on her elbow under her chin as she sat there sleeping. Those eyes flew open. âDonât move. Weâve got your back bandaged up, but there is more to be done. Aevi did a good job, but the tissue is fragile and requires you to stay still. If you have pain, I can give you a dose.â
A grunt was his reply. âNo. Just tell me that everyone is alright for the moment. I need to know.â Anashae looked up at him and nodded, âEveryone is alright, now rest.â He heaved out a sigh, âYou wouldnât lie to me would you?â he asked. âNot about this, and not ever unless it was to keep your sorry ass alive or safe. Now sleep or Iâm knocking you out again.â He noted that she was already up and was about to comment when he felt a pinch. The room blurred. So much for not doping him.

The Return of Darvyn: Part 1
His summon had not been unexpected, it was merely a matter of when. The project had been put on hold for now, other forces were at bay and the world as they knew it had been turned on end, again. Whatever guiding force of the universe, the sun, the gods, all of it⊠they had a certain flare for the dramatic. By now, she found it tedious and yet it wasnât a time for apathy. There was too many fronts to be secured.
âLetting yourself be heard these days, Pet?â came the question from Darvynâs lips as he hunched over a gun. The room was otherwise silent, save for the clicking sounds and scuffing of grinder to metal which he meted out with precise strokes.
âOnly for you. You know the drill on a re-entry. And youâre not facing the door, Darvyn. How bad is it? What did they do?â That normally sultry voice was almost quiet now. And he remained quiet for a long moment as he shrugged off the leather jacket that shrouded his frame. The hiss that filled the air came from her lips in response. Even though lengths of gauze swaddled his torso, the damage was severe, it didnât even take a trained eye to tell. This was bad.
In the moments to follow, the raven-haired woman began to undo the bloodied bandaging and inspect things further herself. And as she beheld the injuries as they lay bare now in her sight, anger burned within her soul. âIâll get the med kit. There are still shards buried in the flesh and festering. I am going to have to carve you so Iâll prepare a sedative⊠I wish he was here right now.â
Darvyn turned and reached with a grimace to place a hand atop hers. âYou know why Aradoth cannot be here right now, Pet. There are things he has to know. And if the situation were reversedâŠâ
âI know,â she snapped before biting down on the inside of her lip. âIt doesnât make it easy. And heâd have wanted to be here for this, to help with this. For you.â Darvyn, for his part, lowered his head in thought and nodded as his mind turned to the young man. He hadnât felt a bond like that since the day heâd met the little scrawny slip of a nine year old some six hundred years prior. âNot sure Iâd want him to see me this busted up. Sometimes the things we have to do to keep from blowing a cover areâŠâ âRidiculous?â she offered with a sharpness that actually surprised him. âAmong other things,â he countered with a wry grin.
A breath was drawn through gritted teeth as she swept aside his gun workings and the sound of them clattering to the floor drew a litany of curses from his mouth. âYouâre more important,â she bit out in frustration as the stench flared in her nostrils again. Darvyn didnât argue. She began to move around him after wiping down the table and placing a clean sheet upon it but the man stopped her. âThe back is the worst of it presently, tend to that.â The look he was given was murderous, but for the moment she complied. Once he was doped, heâd have no choice and be unable to resist. She secured the perimeter though before proceeding. Some things were never left to chance.
âThereâs something else, but do what you need to do right now. Itâll keep.â She didnât insist on knowing, not one bit. This was going to take hours just to remove the bits that had been left embedded in his skin and muscle. âThis looks like fel-shards and metal spikes on the end of a cat of nine tails?â Darvyn chuckled and nodded, âYou remember your weaponry well. And it isnât like we havenât done the same. This time it just happens to be me. Itâs going to take a bit of work on my end to set things to rights again. You remember the last time.â She plucked a piece of fel crystal out of one of the gashes wordlessly, her lips pressed into a thin line.
Needle and syringe were employed before the woman went about beginning to pick pieces from his flesh and opening up festering pockets that had begun to heal around damage.âI know. And Iâll be sending for the little one and donât you argue. Youâll not get proper range of motion without her and you know it.â A grunt came as the reply. He had known that much when he sent for Anashae. It was something he would not fight as much as he wanted to. And she wasnât exactly a little girl anymore, no, Aevi-doll was all grown up.

So much had happened. So many things that couldnât be taken back. Duty interfered with the only happiness heâd ever really reached for. And while he didnât blame anyone, least of all her, there was a piece of him that turned back to his origins.
Men like him werenât meant for things like that really.
