Fire-themed character who isn't hotheaded and angry, but genuinely kind and welcoming and warm like a hearth. Who draws people around them, but also refuses to tamp down any part of themselves and so also may accidentally cause hurt without realizing. Life-giving, but still very much fire.

Water-themed character who isn't a gentle steam, but a raging flood. Who is constantly holding themselves back from all the destruction they could cause. Who chooses every word, every action with care, because they know the pain that carelessness can cause, but is also acutely aware that sometimes renewal requires destruction.

Throughout her book, Peril wants to be the hero that Clay is - ironic, because Clay did not think he was a hero at all in his own book.

Peril also appreciates him in her book because he's kind, warm, and strong-hearted - ironic, because in Clay's book, he wanted everyone to see that side of him instead of the "big scary monster" side that Kestrel drilled into him.

Of course the other dragonets knew he was the kindest dragon ever, but for the first dragon he ever met outside the cave to almost immediately think that of him... for that dragon to see him as the hero he could never see himself as... for her to continue to have that opinion of him seven books later because he was simply being himself... that's rather ironic.

It's not just Clay who affected Peril's view of herself. She affected his view of himself, too.
