60 is a physical data visualization that illustrates the extreme rate at which data is being exchanged on the internet.  It features  a series of sand timers, each of which represents a different internet platform and the sand within them is equal to the volume of activity that occurs on that platform in one minute. The data is used is  based on study conducted by Excelecom, a technology and data management consultancy.

Snow Matters

A collection of weather information for ski and snowboarding planning. There are about 10 million people going skiing and snowboarding every year in the U.S. The ultimate goal of Snow Matters is to provide a worldwide platform that combines historical weather trends, the single resort’s details and the ability to visualize road traffic or flight prices from where one is. This one prototype is focused on the visualization of historical weather trends in the U.S. from 2010 to 2015.

Segue

Segue is an experimental tool for alternative browsing and content discovery.

Articles from the New York Times are discovered via user generated keywords, and connections between articles are found via a conceptual semantic network. 

For example, a search for “food” brings up an article on fajitas. Give Fajitas, a Tex-Mex Classic, the Treatment They Deserve. This article has a keyword of “meat”, which is semantically connected to the idea of a “butcher shop”. Searching for this brings up an article called The New Europeans, which features an interview with a refugee who used to be a butcher.

As the user select the  individual season and watching the timeline, he or she is able to see the percentage of people alive at that particular moment (episode).

Olfactory Taxonomy

“Olfactory Taxonomy is an investigation into polarizing scents. We wanted to test people’s reaction to 8 basic scents. in the world of perfume design, these are known as 'base notes.’ The scents we chose were Vetiver, Peppermint, Vanilla, Clove, Lavender, Fennel, Egyptian Musk, and Black Pepper. Through these scents, we balanced a desire for variety, accessibility, affordability, and an element of surprise. We placed each scent in a black box, hidden by a layer of felt, so they could be smelled but not seen.

In our visualization, we mapped each participant’s reaction to each scent from 1 - 10, one being very negative and 10 being very positive on the x axis. Then, on the y axis, we mapped the strength of that feeling from 1 - 10, 1 being very weak and 10 being very strong. We also asked participants to try to name the scent and to share a memory about the scent and added these in a hover tooltip on each point in the visualization. In the end, we were surprised to find that some smells we thought would be universally adored were actually quite polarizing. We also noticed that participants had a difficult time identifying unnamed scents, even if they could tell the scent 'smelled familiar.' However, the most interesting finding was that memories evoked by scents often correlated to common cultural experiences.”

Collective Craving

Collective Craving is an interactive Twitter visualization of human cravings during specific events. It has collected almost one million tweets containing the keyword ‘craving’, captured on 13 major US public events and holidays from Fall 2015 to Spring 2016. Using the web as its main interface, it provides users with a macro-level comparison that shows the top 50 most craved foods during those events and how the popularity of a given food changes over time. It also lets users be immersed in a micro-level exploration of every event, within a specific time constraint. At the core of this project lies an investigation into what kind of insight we can gain from the arbitrary, everyday data that we usually don’t care about, and how to turn it into a more meaningful knowledge. This project tries to capture the fleeting moment of human desire and cultivate the uniqueness of cravings as something ephemeral and mutually experienced. By creating and analyzing the database of human cravings, this project aims to evoke interest in the socio-digital era through visualizing our food culture as depicted by online users.

Cinematic Alien Tourism

Overall trends: * The further you get from earth, the less you like action movies. * Franchises and sequels are very popular. * Most popular genres are action and comedy * 4th of July and New Years are most common dates. Aliens must like fireworks?

KickSpotter

This project was an exploration of kickstarter projects using a scraped dataset. The initial goal of the visualization was to highlight the different lifespans of projects, both in the various forms of success in kickstarter projects (slow burn to the goal vs passing it within a day), as well as after the campaign was finished (some projects going smoothly while others stumble as budget and scope issues arise).

The dataset ultimately didn’t allow for this kind of granular exploration, so I opted to instead compare the raw values of the project goal, number of backers and total amount pledged. I also added calculations for these such as average backer donation. The next steps for the project mostly center around further exploration of certain curated segments of the dataset as well as greater access to the total kickstarter data (the current setup only takes successful projects from Games & Technology).
