different types of “i’m a famous author” daydreams:

on a panel at a book convention with other famous authors (we are all friends with a great dynamic and they think i’m cool)

what the about the author section looks like (author picture is black and white but casual, i’m not looking at the camera and look semi-mysterious but in a cool and approachable way)

the dedications of the books (definitely implies to the reader that there is an inside joke with the person it’s dedicated to here)

book covers (if i imagine too many kinds it’s just because they get cool re-released covers and special editions)

trailer of the movie adaptation (and that moment in the movie credits when it says based on the book by my name)

not “i’m a famous author” daydreams:

having this be my job when in reality i procrastinate so much

More famous author daydreams:

Giving talks at schools and encouraging kids to write, and maybe inspiring a few to go on to become successful authors or artists themselves

Setting up a scholarship or summer course for creative writing classes

Teaching a creative writing class and having people excited to learn from me and discuss examples of my teachings from my books

Doing a book tour/con appearance and getting to talk to fans about the books they’re working on and offer support to them in their creative endeavors (seriously one of the best parts of going to cons is young writers asking me about my work and wanting to talk about their WIP with me).

* My favourite authors saying cool things about my book that I can print on the inside cover

* Tweeting out fun extended universe facts, releasing links to my characters’ canon Spotify playlists, and Other Adventures in Having an Online Following

* People drawing beautiful fanart of my characters, cosplaying my characters at conventions, and/or coming up with fun headcanons about my characters

* Hanging out with the cast and crew of my novel’s TV/movie adaptation and talking in interviews about how much fun it is to get to know each other as both people and artists and inspire each other’s creativity as we bring a story to life on the big screen

* Watching all my writer friends also make it big and looking back on how much of a difference we made in each other’s artistic journey, celebrating our mutual successes and continuing to encourage each other to grow and create!

I struggle with... Sitting down and staying focused. Some days I write for hours, but most days, I write 3 lines and can't seem to get more in for no reason apparent

This one is a tricky issue to solve, because in all honesty, no matter how many articles you read or motivational quotes you scroll through, you will never actually be productive unless you make yourself, and that’s the sad truth of writing. I do have some resources that may help you with this, though. 

I’m not sure where your sporadic writer’s block is coming from, but if you’re having a case of falling out of love with writing temporarily, here are some things for you:

There was an experiment a professor did. I think it was pottery students. He did an experiment of “quality” vs “quantity”. One half of the class he told; you have to make as many pots as possible. Good pots, bad pots, shitty pots, whatever. The more pots you make, the higher your grade.

The other half of the class were told, “you can make only one pot”. But that pot had to be perfect. The quality had to be high; the highest quality pot would get the best mark.

But when it came to the grading, they noticed something weird.

All the best quality pots were in the ‘quantity’ group.

The guys who were literally churning out pots, trying to make as many as possible, not concentrating on the quality. But every pot they made, made them better at making pots. By the end of the month (I think it was a month) - they had some pretty awesome pots coming out, because they enjoying finding all the ways and all the things they could do to make all their pots. Where as the ‘quality’ guys had spent their time reading up on pots, and technique, and researching and planning; which was all great but they’d had no further practice at actually making pots.

The best way to get really good at something, the only way to be really good at something, is to make lots of shitty attempts at that thing several of which will fail. If all you create are perfect things then you won’t improve, because how can you improve on perfect?

↳ luis montas is a boy just graduating from high school and finally taking the leap to coming out of his shell. a party at the house of one of the most attractive boys in school goes sour near the end of the night, and due to a bit of drinking, luis finds himself on a bus at three in the morning. he manages to find a farm at the very last stop, and he lies his way into the hospitality of two women and a cute boy his age. luis finally thinks he is in the clear from his emotional turmoil - but things never stay on still waters.

writing rule of the day: write garbage. write the absolute worst. write grammar-less sentences as they please you, write grammar-less sentences as they don’t. write like you don’t give a fuck. write because you don’t. write ugly. write rashly. use adverbs, collect them in a giant bucket and splash them around, use filler words where you need them the least, use too many of them, use say, use walk and look and hear and feel and use cussing as you go. you’re on your first draft. it’s all about getting it done.

we write in half hour sessions, you can join in for as few or as many as you’d like. we all start writing at the same time, write for 30 minutes, then compare word counts to see who got the most done. winner gets nothing but bragging rights and everyone else gets to feel just as accomplished!

there is a 15 minute break between every round for conversation, writing tips and posing questions, or sharing some of what you wrote
