Creepy Vampire
This vampire drawing goes back a few years. I was exploring a more feral, vampire-spawn type of look. A more primal and unsettling sort of vampire.

Big Weird Bird
I made this big, weird bird while drawing with my four-year-old son.

Goblin Girl
A well-armed and angry goblin girl, drawn during my online teaching days in the pandemic. I wanted her to feel fierce, and I like how her energy and attitude come through in the drawing.

Popeye the Sailorman
I’ve always admired Popeye and his spirited determination. There’s something timeless about his can-do attitude, and I tried to capture his rough-and-tumble energy as he takes on a sea monster. I made this drawing of Popeye while teaching online during the pandemic.

Drill Hand!
This drawing was inspired by one of my son Ronaldo’s own sketches. I loved the creativity of his design, especially the drill and flail arms, and decided to build on it. It’s a collaboration of sorts.

Another Angry Troll
Here’s a good old angry troll I made while drawing with my son. He looks particularly furious, maybe he just stubbed his toe! There’s something about drawing exaggerated emotions that really brings characters to life.

Blue Robot Guy
I made this blue robot guy while drawing alongside my four-year-old son. I added some cross-hatching to finish up the background, giving it a bit more depth and texture.

Usagi Yojimbo in the Rain
I drew Usagi Yojimbo in the rain a few years back. I’ve been a fan of Stan Sakai’s comics since I was a kid. My brother introduced me to the early graphic novels when I was at summer camp in Michigan. I think this marks my 400th post on my sketch blog. That represents hundreds of drawings and countless hours of creativity.

Young Witch with Caterpillar Pet
This is a drawing I made of a young witch and her enormous pet caterpillar. I created it during my online teaching days in the pandemic. The large pet adds a fun, surreal element to the scene.

Jungle Monster
Here’s my drawing of a monster creeping up behind an archeologist in the deep, dark jungle. I like the design of the creature. The inspiration for the drawing came from a mask I saw in an art museum.

Weretoot!
A monster with a stick and a tooting werewolf. The toot was my son’s idea, and once he said it, there was really no going back. The pose just kind of demanded it. As for the lizard-amphibian monster with the club, I’m not entirely sure why he’s so attached to it, but he clearly takes it very seriously. Some mysteries are better left unsolved.

Goom And Parademon
I drew my version of Jack Kirby’s Marvel monster Goom. I’ve always been a fan of Kirby’s work. His monster designs are just great. They are big, bold, and full of personality. I also drew a Parademon, one of Darkseid’s foot soldiers from the Superman animated series. Lately, my sons and I have been watching the Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoon shows from the 1990s and early 2000s, so…

Lost In Space!
This one’s a space explorer wandering through some kind of alien jungle. I actually drew her first as a standalone figure, and she looked a little too isolated on the page. So I went back in and built an environment around her. It’s always fun when a drawing sort of grows into something bigger than the original idea.

Female Viking Warrior
Here’s a female Viking warrior, which was a nice change of pace from all the monsters. I made some energetic line work in the background. It was cool stepping outside my usual creature designs and focusing more on a character, even if she still looks like she could handle a monster or two without much trouble.

Robot Drawing
This robot came out of that same weekend drawing session with my boys. I started with the figure and then decided it needed a bit more going on, so I added a background and mechanical detail. I was looking at Wally Wood’s old EC Comics sci-fi illustrations for inspiration. He had such a great way of making machinery feel dense and believable without losing the energy of the drawing.
