Zero-Energy Homes Reveal Solutions for the Future

One approach to energy efficiency and conservation that is rising in popularity is the development of zero-energy homes. Sometimes called net-zero energy homes, these homes have the potential to create as much energy as they consume over the course of a year. Approximately 12,000 zero-energy homes currently exist in the United States, and, based on the current average of new home construction in California, that number could increase to 100,000 by 2020, according to an estimate by the Net-Zero Energy Coalition. A driving force behind the adoption of zero-energy homes are new state and city government regulations demanding the use of energy efficiency technology for new home builds. For instance, the state of California recently passed legislation requiring solar rooftop panels for most new homes and some residential buildings (up to three floors). For builders and homeowners seeking to satisfy these regulations or simply reduce their dependence upon energy sources that emit large amounts of CO2, zero-energy homes provide a promising solution.
