Mary Wade 156th Anniversary
Mary Wade Home opened its doors at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Pine Street on December 2, 1866, and the first president of the nonprofit board was Mrs. Joseph E. Sheffield, wife of Yale's Sheffield Scientific School benefactor. The founding of Mary Wade, then called The Home for the Friendless, dates from September 8, 1866, when a group of ladies met at the home of Mrs. Elie Whitney, at Elm and Orange Streets, for the purpose of starting a home for homeless girls and women following the Civil War. Mrs. Roger S. Baldwin, Mrs. William T. Eustis, Mrs. Charles Fabrique, Mrs. Wooster Hotchkiss, Mrs. Peletiah Perit, Mrs. S. Dryden Phelps, Mrs. Judson A. Root, Mrs. Joseph E. Sheffield, Mrs. George W. Staples, Mrs. Alfred Walker, and Mrs. Whitney met and agreed to found a home for homeless women and children. The Structured pictured was constructed partially in the 1870's and in 1897 Lucy Hall Boardman made it possible to construct a new building with a $20,000 donation in honor of her sister, Mary Wade.

Meet the Purple-crowned Fairywren (Malurus coronatus)! 💜 It’s native to parts of northern Australia, where it inhabits areas that offer lush tropical vegetation and are near freshwater. It dines on a range of invertebrates such as beetles, grasshoppers, and spiders. How do you tell a male from a female? Males have black cheek patches, while females have reddish-brown ones. During breeding season it’s even easier to distinguish the two: males have the characteristic purple crown, while females have gray plumage on their heads.
