Happy Birthday Buddy

Buddy Rich is the most influential drummer in the world. At least he was to me. As a young kid, I remember studying old VHS tapes of him. My favorite thing about Buddy was how he commanded the band. He LED the band. In high school, I started playing jazz exclusively. I was in over 15 ensembles by my senior year. I emulated everything Buddy did. From his drastic dynamics, his extended (genre blurring) solos, and his over-the-top expressiveness. I spent hours learning his “one handed drum roll,” his “impossible fill” and his Cherokee solos. Buddy- you’ve changed the way I play drums and I will always look up to you. Thanks for being the best.
