Julian Davis is legal counsel for various San Francisco businesses, start ups, and non-profiqt organizations and served on the board of directors of the San Francisco Housing Development Corporation for five years. Mr. Davis was recognized with a 2009 Best of the Bay Local Hero Award. For several years, the San Francisco Bay Guardian has recognized the positive efforts of local individuals and organizations with the annual Best of the Bay issue, which includes the Local Hero Awards. In the most recent edition, the publication praised the work of Bruce Brugmann, Jean Dibble, and Tim Redmond. All three were instrumental in the creation of the Guardian and the Best of the Bay issue, a practice that has since been adopted by nearly every alt-weekly in the United States. Mr. Brugmann and Ms. Dibble - a husband-and-wife team - founded the Guardian in 1966. Mr. Redmond began writing for the paper in the 1980s as a political journalist. Redmond’s coverage of environment, economic justice, and tenant issues has been credited as increasing the Guardian’s local significance and increasing readership. He went on to serve as executive editor for more than three decades. All three individuals have since left the Guardian, though their legacy endures with each Best of the Bay issue.
