Twelve Years a Slave review
I finally decided to read Twelve Years a Slave novel in preparation for a rewatch of its 2013 feature film. I ended up reading it in one sitting, just couldn't put it down once I started. It's been a really long time since a book has triggered so many emotions. Mainly those of disgust, rage, horror & sadness at the thought of so many ruined lives just because if a different skin colour at the hands of institutionalized slavery in the USA & its repercussions are still visible today. Towards the end of the book, I felt a little more hopeful, although no true vindication is ever achieved. I would also like to mention the descriptions of various plantation work done by slaves are very detailed & beautifully written.
Thoughts on Cinematic
Ever since Cinematic was announced, everyone was excited to see what was in store… until the bomb that was All My Friends dropped. A majority of HootOwls (including myself) thought it was absolutely terrible. And while I can get why that song is not everyone’s cup of tea, a common thing I’ve heard throughout the release of the reels and even a little bit today with the release of Cinematic is that the songs are too simplistic in their storytelling and that the “magic” of Owl City is lost in the process. With that said, I want to give my take on why this isn’t a big deal for me.
Songs are often described to children as a form of poetry set to music. But there are a few songs that instead tell stories. Christian artist Matthew West captures this style really well, and he even uses other people’s submitted stories as inspiration for some of his songs. But probably the best song I can think of that tells a story is by a different CCM artist, Mark Schultz. His song Letters from War is easily enjoyed from secular circles, as it details the true story about Schultz’s great-grandmother writing and receiving letters from one of her sons who was captured in World War II. When it comes to telling stories of any kind, the big questions are, “Is it interesting?”, and, “Is it relatable?”. An uninteresting and/or unrelatable story is not going to captivate many.
My point is this: Cinematic is an album where all of its songs, with a few exceptions, tell personal stories. If you go into it looking for deep metaphors or quirky puns, you’re missing the point. If the story is interesting and is relatable, it has potential to be good. And I believe the magic of Owl City is still present in a majority of the songs on Cinematic. So what do I think about Cinematic as a whole? To find out, let’s move on know to our:
Owl City – Cinematic (Album Review)
Warning: Long post ahead!
Excellent review! ^_^
Cinematic is just phenomenal. All My Friends is the only really weak song & even its alt. version is amazing, Breanne collab harkens back to ATBAB days & sounds wonderful. Album works really well as complete body of work, the stories of the songs become clear once you listen to them from top to bottom. My favourite one is currently the title track & Be Brave a close second!
Other favourites in no particular order:
Madeline Island
Firebird
House Wren
Cloud Nine
Not All Heroes Wear Capes
The 5th of July
Album art could’ve been a lot better though.

Owl City - Cinematic acoustic songs
All acoustic songs from Cinematic in one post. The purpose of this to have all acoustics in one place, I was annoyed that some were only uploaded to VEVO and others only to OwlCity YT account. I will add more if/when they’re available.
